Abstract
The present invention provides a support member for supporting a disc record and to a sound reproduction apparatus comprising a turntable (1). The support member has a surface (4) for supporting a disc record (10). At least a region (18) of the turntable comprising the said surface (4) is made from a material which has a plurality of voids and has acoustic impedance which is substantially matched by the disc record (10) to be played.
Description
A SUPPORT MEMBER FOR A DISC RECORD
The present invention relates to a support member for a disc record and to sound reproduction apparatus comprising such a member.
G B Patent specification No 2084784 discloses a sound reproducing apparatus in which the turntable or platter is made of a material that has an acoustic impedance which is substantially matched to that of the record to be played. A disadvantage of this is that the turntable has to have sufficient thickness to be self supporting in order to carry a record without being distorted and to have the appropriate acoustic impedance. In general a thickness of 12-20mm or even up to 40mm is considered to be suitable. This puts serious limitations on the material that the turntable can be made from and could make the cost of the apparatus relatively expensive.
According to the present invention there is provided a support member for supporting a disc record, comprising material having a plurality of voids and having acoustic impedance substantially matched to the disc record to be played.
The material having the plurality of voids may be a foamed material.
The foamed material may be a foamed PVC.
The member may have a thickness of 2 to 6 mm.
Also according to the present invention there is provided sound reproducing apparatus comprising a turntable on which the support member as defined above is located.
The support member may be separate from the turntable and forms a mat or the like on the turntable.
The support member and the turntable may be integral.
The turntable and the support member may comprise the same material.
The turntable may be more rigid than the support member.
Substantially the entire turntable may comprises material having a plurality of voids.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 shows a cross section through a record player carrying a disc record and
Figure 2 shows a similar view of a record player to that illustrated in Figure 1 but with a different turntable.
Reference numerals 1 to 4 and 6-17 on the drawings refer to features which are fully described in GB patent specification No 2084784, In the embodiment of the present invention shown in Figure 1, the turntable 1
instead of having a circular recess 5 provided therein, has a continuous upper surface.
Located on the upper surface of the turntable 1 is a support member 18 having a thickness of from 2 to 6 cm which is made from a material having a plurality of voids such as foamed PVC. The support member is provided with a circular aperture 19 which serves to accommodate the label of the record to be played and is analogous to the recess 5 shown in the drawing of GB patent specification No 20484784.
In Figure 2S there is no separate support member 18 as shown in Figure 1. The upper surface of the turntable is similar to that shown in GB patent specification No 20484784 but substantially the entire turntable is made from material having plurality of voids, such as foamed PVC manufactured, for example, under the names Palight or Silplas.
Claims
1. A support member for supporting a disc record, comprising material having a plurality of voids and having acoustic impedance substantially matched to the disc record to be played.
2. A member according to claim 1 , wherein the material having the plurality of voids is a foamed material.
3. A member according to claim 2, wherein the foamed material is a foamed PVC.
4. A member according to any one of the preceding claims, having a thickness of 2 to 6 mm.
5. A sound reproducing apparatus comprising a turntable on which the support member according to any one of the preceding claims is located.
6. An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the said support member is separate from the turntable and forms a mat or the like on the turntable.
7. An apparatus according to claim 5S wherein the support member and the turntable are integral.
8. An apparatus according to claim or claim 6, wherein the turntable and the support member comprise the same material.
9. An apparatus according to any one of claims 5 to 8, wherein the turntable is more rigid than the support member.
10.An apparatus according to any one of claims 5 to 9, wherein substantially the entire turntable comprises material having a plurality of voids.
11. Sound reproduction apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings.
12. Sound reproduction apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
