Abstract

Sound reproduction apparatus comprises a turntable 1 having a surface 4 for supporting a disk record 10 has at least a region 18 of the surface 4 made from a material which has a plurality of voids and an acoustic impedance which is matched to that of the record 10. Such a support surface material provides advantageous dampening properties. The material of the region 18 may be a foamed material such as foamed PVC, may be less rigid than the remainder of turntable 1, and may have a thickness of between 2 and 6 mm. The entire turntable (fig 2, 1) may be made from such a foamed material, having a plurality of voids.

Description

SOUND REPRODUCTION APPARATUS
The present invention relates to sound reproduction apparatus and particularly to such apparatus for reproducing sound from disc records.
G E] Patent specficahon No 2084784 discloses a sound reproducing apparatus in which He turntable or platter is made of a material that has an acoustic impedance which is substantially matched to that of the record to be plied. A diswntage of this is that Be turntable has to have sufcJent thickness to be self supporting in order to carry a record without being distorted and to have die appropriate acoustic impedance.
In general a thickness of 1 2-20mm is consded to be subbed. This pop serious limitations on the material that the turntable can be made from and could snake the cost of the ppp relatively expensive.
According to the present invention there is provided sound reproduction apparatus comprised a turntable having a surface lbr supporimg a disc record, wherein al least a region of turntable comprising the said surface is made from a material which has a plali of voids and has acoustic impedance which is substantially matched by the disc record to be played.
The material having the plurality of vows may be a foamed material which may be a foamed PVC.
The said region may comprise a portion which is less rigid than the remainder of the turntable.
The said region may have a Sickness of 2 to 6 mm.
The said region may comprise a support member which is separate Mom We remainder of the turntable Substantially the entire turntable may compose material having a plurality of voids.
Also according to the present i.nventon there is provided a sound reproduction apparatus compnsmg a relatively rind ntabJe and a support member vie less rigidity than tile turntable located thereon wherein the sport member comprises a surface for supporting a disc record and Is made fiom material which has acoustic impedance which is substally matched to the acoustic impedance of the disc record to be played.
The support member may comprise a material having a plurality of voids and the material may be a f.omned material such as a foamed PVC.
The support member may have a thickness of 2 to 6mm.
As an example of the present inventions the use of foamed PVC, by virtue of the bubbles within it, provides atageous dampening properties.
This material may enable the tntle or support member if used to hew a mass of 50% of mats or turntables of other materials. Examples of such foamed PVC materials are those manured under Me names Plight and Silplas.
Embodiments of We present mventon mI} now be described by wear of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows a cross section through a record player currying a disc record and Figure 2 shows a similar view of a record player to that illustrated in Figure 1 but with a modified turntable.
Reference numerals 1 to 4 and 6-17 on the drawings refer to features which are Filly described in GB patent specification No 2084784. In the embodiment of the present invention shown in Figure 1, the turntable I instead of having a circular recess 5 provided thereby has a continuous upper surface.
Located on the upper surface of the ttlel is support member 18 having a thickness of from 2 to 6 cm which is made of any of the materials described above and disclosed as being suitable for use in the turntable described in GB patent specification No 20484784. The support member is provided with a circular aperture 19 which serves to accommodate the label of the record to be played and is analogous to the recess 5 shown in the drawing of GB patent specie - ion No 20484784.
In figure 2, there is no separate support member 18 as shown in Figure 1.
The upper surface of the turntable is similar to that shown In GB patent specification No 204847X4 but substantially the entire turntable is made from material having plurality of voids, such as foamed PVC manufactured, for example, under the names Palight or Silplas.
