Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a device for protecting a constantly changing data configuration which is stored in a machine-readable memory, such as especially that of an operating system, from undesired modifications. The method according to the invention comprises the following steps: a) acquiring values of certain parameters that characterize a status of the data configuration, b) generating an actual data pattern from the values acquired in step a), c) comparing the data pattern with at least one given data pattern, d) allocating the generated data pattern from the comparison of step c) to one of at least two categories, one of which corresponds to at least one normal status of the data configuration and one of which corresponds to at least one anomalous status of the data configuration, and e) carrying out at least one protective operation when the generated data pattern was allocated to a category corresponding to an anomalous status.
