Definitions
- the apparatus will have all options from the present art of treadmills, the core invention being the step surface which aim to simulate an uneven terrain. Exercise under controlled instability is proven to give physical benefits, both for strength and rehabilitation after an injury. General muscle control and balance is not stimulated when only exercising on flat and stabile surfaces.
- Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment of a treadmill according to the invention.
- Fig. 7 shows a perspective view of treadmill, in a halfway folded position.
- Fig. 9 shows a side view of the treadmill, in a fully folded position.
- Figs.1Oa-IOb show detail of reel sensor.
- Fig.12 shows a perspective view of a further embodiment according to the invention.
- Fig.15b shows section XHb-XIIb as found in fig.15a.
- Figs.16a- 16c show details of step surface.
- the invention is categorized as a type of treadmill.
- the treadmills on the market today gives the user an option to run indoors, the apparatus simulating running on a flat street or pavement as opposed to the invention which provides an option to run on uneven surfaces as out in the open terrain.
- the inventive treadmill has a base frame 1 configured to be placed on a floor surface.
- An elevated "floor” 2 is fixed to the frame on rubber bushes 3-3'"", the construction allowing some vertical movement of the floor 2.
- An endless stepping belt 4 is rotational fixed round the floor 2 on rollers 5 and 6, located at the front and rear part of the frame 1.
- the front roller is connected to a motor 10 and flywheel 11 through belt 12, this construction of prior art.
- the motor 10 is connected to the interface console 30, as seen on fig. 6, allowing a user to start, stop and set the speed of the stepping belt 4.
- the treadmill here disclosed may also include the belt solutions shown below regarding figs.13-16.
- the height difference of the uneven surface can be from a few mm to a few cm dependent on the radius of rollers 5 and 6, clearance and the quality of material used.
- the surface material would need to be of a semi soft quality in order to withstand the motion round the rollers 5 and 6.
- Fig. 6 shows the top section 35 with an interface console 30.
- the interface console comprise a screen 50, preferably of a touch screen type, and of direct access buttons for functions like on/off 51, start 52, stop 53, menu 54 etc.
- Buttons 55, 55' are of a scroll type with press and or tilt function, and is used for the mentioned basic functions as, on/off, start, stop, menu, etc. and has a direct link to the screen 50, the buttons used for scrolling and navigating in a menu, and for input.
- the touch screen will have a menu where speed settings of the belt motion may be set, and where all functions related to the treadmill is handled.
- the interface console of the invention also includes workout options as levels of resistance and other adjustments regarding workout levels, burn rates, heart rates/pulsation, time, simulated distance etc. common on treadmills on the market today.
- the belt will slow down (or stop) and moving forward 71, the belt will speed up, middle position 72 keeping the last set speed.
- the sensor 61 is also coupled in such a way to the CPU as to read if the wire is pulled fast. Such detection is coupled to register a jerk on the reel 63 indicating a falling user, the detection stopping the treadmill belt.
- the wire transfers signals and can transfer data to the CPU. This means the wire can be connected to equipment reading the pulse and heartbeat of the user, such equipment a common feature on exercise equipment today, and monitored on the screen of the interface console 30.
- Fig. 12 shows a perspective view of an embodiment of the inventive treadmill, the two vertical poles 20, 21 having no common upper connection and interface console as shown for example in fig. 1.
- the purpose of this construction is making a light and slim treadmill.
- the folding and lock mechanism being of one of type disclosed above.
- a screen and interface console 160 might be located on one side of handgrips 161, 162, but preferably this design calls for having a screen 164 located on wall or similar the interface being handled by remote control 165 and multifunctional buttons 55, 55'.
- the CPU 167 controlling interface- and screen functions can also be remote from the treadmill or integrated within the treadmill frame.
- the treadmill according to the invention has a system of electrical circuits and electronics, which form a computer like device controlled by an interface console 30, 110, which has a CPU.
- the interface console 110 has a display unit 111 and buttons or keypad and preferably a touch screen for input.
- the motors 90 and 95 are connected through a control unit 133 with the CPU which is controlled from the interface console.
- the treadmill as disclosed in figs 13-16 may have a reel detection system as disclosed in figs. 1Oa-IOb or as shown in figs.l5a-15b a set of optical detectors 120, 120' which are located in banisters 85, 85'. These will register the position of a user between front and rear of roller belt 83.
- motors 95, 102 which can adjust the angle of the roller belt frame 82, relative the main frame 84 and floor.
- the angle transverse the direction of roller belt motion and elevation, simulating up or downhill.
- the motors are connected to the CPU 138 of the treadmill interface console 110, which has software made shown on a display 111 for user friendly adjustments via buttons, keyboard or touch screen.
- the CPU will have software 140 which include programs for terrain simulation.
- the screen will show a terrain, preferably as a video film, which the frame 82 and roller belt will simulate.
- Numeral 142 illustrates the systems ability to connect to external sources for information, downloading of new software and training programs, and true time online activities.
- the potential for developing terrain programs, which the treadmill can simulate, is obvious.
- the inventors application WO2006/038815 describes an interface system and software, which the present invention can utilize.
- a motor 10 is connected to roller 5 with a drive belt 12, which is a common method of driving the step surface belt of a treadmill.
- Another method would be to have an electric motor within one of the rollers 5 or 6, a type electric motor which have the stators rotating instead of the axle, this being obvious to anyone familiar to this art.
- a third method not known by the inventors of this application that could be utilized, namely utilizing the art of linear motors and the principle of magnetic flux.
- the step belt travels, as orientated standing on the step belt surface 4, there are positioned rows of magnets 150.
- the rows of magnets 150 are positioned on the lower part of belt surface travel as shown on figs. 20a - 20c but may also be positioned as indicated by dotted lines in the upper part.
