Best Mode
[12] According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a system for providing bus arrival information, comprising: a bus terminal included in a bus and detecting position information of the bus, the bus terminal generating and transmitting bus arrival information including the detected position information of the bus, a bus identification (ID), and a bus service route ID; and a bus-arrival information device receiving the bus arrival information from the bus terminal and displaying the location information of the bus, wherein the bus passes by bus stops based on the bus ID and the bus service route ID from the received bus-arrival information and wherein the bus-arrival information device is installed at bus stops included in the received bus arrival information that the bus is destined for the bus stop of the bus arrival information device. [13] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of providing bus arrival information, the method comprising: detecting a current position of a bus using a terminal included in the bus; generating bus arrival information including the detected current position of the bus, a bus identification (ID), and a bus service route ID; transmitting the bus arrival information from the terminal of the bus to a bus arrival information device provided at a bus stop located within a communication range of the terminal of the bus; and displaying the current position information of the bus on the bus arrival information device when it is determined from the bus ID and the bus service route ID that the bus is destined for the bus stop of the bus arrival information device.
Mode for Invention
[14] A system of and a method for providing bus arrival information will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which exemplary embodiments of the invention are shown.
[15] FlG. 1 is a schematic diagram illustrating a bus arrival information system for providing bus arrival information according to an embodiment of the present invention, FlG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating a terminal installed in each bus 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention, and FlG. 3 is a block diagram illustrating a bus arrival information device 120 installed at each bus stop according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[16] Referring to FIGS. 1 through 3, the bus arrival information system includes the terminal installed in each bus 100 and the bus arrival information device 120 provided at each bus stop. The terminal of the bus 100 directly communicates with the bus arrival information device 120 over a predetermined communication network 110.
[17] The terminal of the bus 100 includes a position detection unit 200, a data storage unit 210, a control unit 220, and transmitter unit 230.
[18] In detail, the position detection unit 200 detects the current position of the bus 100 in real time using a global positioning system (GPS). The position detection unit 200 can use a beacon device instead of GPS.
[19] The data storage unit 210 stores information about the bus 100 such as bus stop identification (ID) information or bus stops for which the bus 100 is destined, a bus service route ID, a bus ID, first and last bus operation times, and bus service intervals.
[20] The control unit 220 generates bus arrival information. The bus arrival information generated by the control unit 220 includes current position information of the bus 100 detected by the position detection unit 200 and bus service route ID and bus ID information stored in the data storage unit 210.
[21] The transmitter unit 230 transmits the bus arrival information generated by the control unit 220 to the bus arrival information device 120 of a bus stop determined by the bus stop ID information over the communication network. The transmitter unit 230 is omnidirectional and has a communication range of several meters to several thousands of meters. For example, the transmitter unit 230 may be a radio frequency (RF) transmitter, an infrared communication device, or a wireless local area network (WLAN) communication device.
[22] A bus service route can be several thousands of meters long. When the communication range of the terminal of the bus 100 is less than the length of the bus service route, bus arrival information transmitted from the terminal of the bus 100 may be not delivered to all bus arrival information devices 120 of the bus stops. In this case, the bus arrival information can be delivered to a remote bus arrival information device 120 that enables communication between the bus arrival information devices 120.
[23] For example, a bus service route A has bus stops a, b, c, and d that are located at intervals of 2 km; a terminal included in a bus has a communication range of 3 km; and bus arrival information devices provided at the bus stops a, b, c, and d have a communication range of at least 2 km and can communicate with one another. In the case when only the bus stops a and b are in the communication range of the terminal of the bus, only the bus arrival information devices of the bus stops a and b can receive bus arrival information from the terminal of the bus. Then, the bus arrival information device of the bus stop b can deliver the received bus arrival information to the bus arrival information device of the bus stop c, and the bus arrival information device of the bus stop c can deliver the information to the bus arrival information device of the bus stop d.
[24] The bus arrival information device 120 provided at each bus stop will now be described with reference to FIG. 3. The bus arrival information device 120 includes a receiver unit 300, a control unit 310, and a display unit 320. The bus arrival information device 120 may further include an inter-stop communication unit 330 for communication with bus arrival information devices 120 of other bus stops.
[25] The receiver unit 300 of the bus arrival information device 120 receives bus arrival information from the terminals of the buses. The receiver unit 300 can receive bus arrival information from a bus that is not destined for the bus stop of the bus arrival information device 120.
[26] Therefore, the control unit 310 determines whether the bus arrival information is transmitted from a bus destined for the bus stop of the bus arrival information device 120 using the bus service route ID included in the bus arrival information. If the bus arrival information is transmitted from a bus destined for the bus stop of the bus arrival information device 120, the control unit 310 detects the number and position of the bus using the bus ID and position information included in the bus arrival information and controls the display unit 320 to display the number and position of the bus. An example of the display unit 320 will be described later with reference to FlG. 4.
[27] When the terminal of the bus 100 has an insufficient communication range, the terminal of the bus 100 cannot transmit bus arrival information to all the bus arrival information devices 120 of all the bus stops of a bus service route. In this case, the bus arrival information device 120 that received the bus arrival information can transmit the received bus arrival information to a neighboring bus arrival information device 120. For this, the bus arrival information device 120 may include an additional transmitter unit as the inter-stop communication unit 330.
[28] FlG. 4 is a diagram illustrating a screen 400 of a bus arrival information device installed to a bus arrival information device of each bus stop according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[29] Referring to FlG. 4, the screen 400 of the bus arrival information device 120 includes a plurality of lines 410 arranged in a line-by-line format. Bus arrival information of each bus service route is displayed using the lines 410 on the screen 400. Each of the lines 410 denotes a bus service route and includes a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) corresponding to bus stops of the bus service route.
[30] Although not illustrated on the screen 400 in FlG. 4, the current position of a bus can be provided through alphabetical letters. For example, a service route A of a bus includes bus stops a, b, c, and d, and the bus moves between the bus stops a and b. Then, bus arrival information devices of the bus stops b, c, and d can display 'route A bus approaches bus stop b' using bus arrival information received from the terminal of the bus.
[31] FlG. 5 is a flowchart illustrating a method of providing bus arrival information according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[32] Referring to FlG. 5, in operation 500, a terminal included in a bus detects the current position of the bus using GPS or other means. In operation 510, the terminal generates bus arrival information including a bus service route ID, a bus ID, and the detected position of the bus, and sends the bus arrival information to bus arrival information devices of all bus stops. In operation 520, the bus arrival information device of a bus stop displays the received bus arrival information on a line-by-line screen of a display unit.
[33] According to the present invention, in the bus arrival information system, the terminal of a bus transmits position information of the bus directly to the bus arrival information device of a bus stop. Therefore, problems such as communication delay are not present, and as such, the bus arrival and departure information can be accurately provided to users.
[34] The invention can also be embodied as computer-readable codes on a computer- readable recording medium. The computer-readable recording medium is any data storage device that can store data which can be thereafter read by a computer system. Examples of the computer-readable recording medium include read-only memory (ROM), random-access memory (RAM), CD-ROMs, magnetic tapes, floppy disks, optical data storage devices, and carrier waves (such as data transmission through the Internet). The computer-readable recording medium can also be distributed over network-coupled computer systems so that the computer-readable code is stored and executed in a distributed fashion.
[35] While the present invention has been particularly shown and described with reference to exemplary embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those of ordinary skill in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the following claims.
