Abstract

A device consisting of a number of weights and levers for objective intraoperative measurement of changes in testis rigidity caused by testicular diseases. The device comes into contact with the testis (11), deforming it in a pre-determined manner and simultaneously measuring the force required to achieve the above-mentioned deformation. The testis is secured in a groove by a reference plate (18), and deformed by a force produced by a set of weights (15) which are movable along a shaft (12). The latter is equipped with a scale (14) measuring the weights position in respect to the horizontal shaft (13). Testis rigidity is assessed by the position of the weight (15) on the scale when given deformation is achieved. The device can also operate by applying a constant force and measuring the achieved deformation. Device readings can intraoperatively assess damage and viability of the testis and assist surgeons in decision-making.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS received by the International Bureau on 23 March 2007 (23.03.2007)
1. Device for harmless, non- invasive, intraoperative measurement of testis rigidity applying a constant deformation to the testis and obtaining a measurement proportional to the force required for achieving said deformation; said device comprising a support, means for immobilizing the testis, a shaft equipped with a scale and testis contact means for contacting and deforming the testis; said shaft rotating about a horizontal axis; mechanical stop means for limiting the rotation of said shaft and accordingly the maximum deformation of the testis; a set of weights positioned on said shaft, including at least one movable weight, able to slide along the scale of said shaft, producing a torque around said horizontal axis causing the deformation of the testis.
2. Device according to claim 1, wherein said means for immobilizing the testis comprise a groove where the testis is placed and a reference plate; said reference plate secures the testis in steady place for the measurement during operation and is vertically adjustable to accommodate testes of different sizes.
