Definitions

  • This invention relates to flotation devices which aid therapeutic techniques and both therapeutic and fitness exercise in water by providing support, stability and increasing buoyancy resistance for the exerciser.
  • the upward force of buoyancy and the resultant offloading of the myofascial/skeletal system causes difficulty in achieving specificity of exercise and a partial or open kinetic chain environment due to the decrease in ligamentous and muscle support.
  • US 6,056,613 teaches a device comprising a circular chain of connected floats which can be arranged around the body in various configurations to achieve different floating attitudes in which to exercise.
  • US 5,391 ,133 teaches a dumbbell shaped device which has two air filled buoyancy chambers mounted on a bar which causes the bar to float.
  • exercises with this device tend to be limited to arm movement since the device is gripped in the hand.
  • US 4,804,177 teaches a device consisting of two large floats tethered to a belt worn by the wearer who is thereby suspended in the water while exercising. Again this method of aquatic exercising lacks specificity.

  • the central float 4 shown in Figure 2 has four slots 5 adapted to receive straps 2,3.
  • the device is assembled as shown in Figure 3 by threading straps 2,3 through slots 5 and passing them back through slots 5 to cross over and then passing them through slots 5 again.
  • side floats 1 are firmly tethered to central float 4 and straps 2,3 can be adjusted to provide variable separation between floats 1 and float 4 as required for example in Figure 5 for face down exercising or in Figure 6 for lying back exercising. Further the crossing over straps serve to secure the device to a hand as shown in Figure 8 or to a foot as shown in Figure 9. Also two devices can be used at the same time as shown in Figures 7, 10 and 11 and the device can be made in different sizes to accommodate an individual's height, weight, strength and activity requirements.
  • FIG. 12 and 13 An alternative strapping arrangement for the device is shown in Figures 12 and 13. Instead of being embedded in floats 1 , straps 2 and 3 pass through slots 6 and 7 in one of the side floats 1 , passing through slots 5 in central float 4 and terminate by securing at slots 6 and 7 in the second side float 1. Two additional separate straps pass through slots 5 of central float 4 and are restrained at buckle 8 with velcro retaining loop backs 9. This arrangement makes for more convenient attachment of the device to hand or foot as shown in Figures 16, 17 and18. An additional securing strap 10 can also be added, as shown in Figures 14 and 15, threading through slots 6 of floats 1 and slots 5 of float 4 and having buckle 11 at one end and retaining velcro 12 at the other end.
  • securing strap 10 allows the device to be used in the bound configuration of Figure 15 for example strapped to the back of a hand as shown in Figure 19. It also allows the device to be secured around a leg as shown in Figure 20 or a thigh as shown in Figure 21.
  • the Aquakinector is designed to improve specificity and stability in therapeutic treatment and exercise in water. It enables a progressive and specific water exercise program connecting hydrodynamics and biomechanics of movement in water as detailed in the above research publications.
  • the aquatic exercise and supportive flotation device of this invention assists control and strength for both rehabilitation treatment programs and fitness exercises. It achieves this because of the ability to apply it to the part of the body appropriate for exercising a particular muscle group and the ability to move its centre of buoyancy by adjusting the length of the connecting straps.
  • the leg exercise shown in Figure 9 would be difficult due to instability with only a float under the foot.
  • the side floats beside the leg the resisting force is directed vertically upwards in line with the hip and knee joints which makes control and specificity of leg movement easier.
  • the Aquakinector utilises the principles of hydrodynamics to enable an exercise regime designed on current evidence based research in neuro muscular skeletal biomechanics.
  • Exercising with the Aquakinector improves neuro motor stability, dynamic and functional postural control, moverhent control, balance, mobility and coordination. Individual exercises are progressed into functional movement patterns to assist co-ordination and fluidity of movement. Varying the position of the Aquakinector and the position of the user in the water further improves balance and strength.
