- a tire intermediate (sometimes referred to as a "green tire") is placed into a mold and subjected to heat and pressure in order to cure the tire and add features such as a tread pattern to the tire.
- U.S. Patent No. 6,726,460 which is owned by Applicants' assignee and is incorporated herein by reference, provides an example of such a mold that can be used during the curing step.
- Various information such as the manufacturer's name, the model of the tire, manufacturing date, maximum inflation pressures and the like may also be added or "marked” onto the tire during the curing step. For a given model of tire, much of this information will remain unchanged from tire to tire throughout the time during which the manufacturer produces such particular model of tire.
- a manufacturer may place a mark on a tire reflecting the date on which the tire was manufactured at a particular facility. Understandably, as the date changes, the manufacturer will seek to change the date mark accordingly.
- the existing method is to mark or hammer a stamp into the bottom of the mold. While the mark or stamp may be changed, removal and subsequent replacement is time consuming and frequently requires the use of special tools. [0003] Accordingly, a mark that may be used in a tire mold and that may be readily changed is desirable. Additional benefit would be realized if such a mark could be changed with minimal or no use of special tools.
- a tire mold having an a replaceable component for molding information onto a sidewall of a tire.
- Such tire mold includes a marking element that defines a contact surface along a first end.
- the contact surface is configured for molding information along the sidewall of the tire.
- the marking element has a body portion connecting the first end to the second end.

- the mold portion defines a recess configured for complementary receipt of the marking element.
- An aligning element is positioned upon the mold portion and within the recess.
- the aligning element is configured to cooperate with the orienting element so as to determine the orientation of the marking element within the recess.
- the aligning element is also configured for causing the marking element to rotate as the stamp is inserted into or removed from the recess.
- the aligning element includes a pin connected to the mold portion within the recess. The pin would then be received into an orienting element, for example a groove, located along the marking element.
- the aligning element could be constructed as a groove along the recess of the mold portion that receives a pin extending from the marking element.
- the groove can take on a variety of shapes that will serve to orient the marking element and cause the marking element to rotate as it is moved within the recess.
- a biasing element can be included for urging or pulling the marking element into the recess of the mold portion.
- the biasing element may be a magnet, electromagnet, vacuum structure, or other features for causing the marking element to be pulled into the mold portion.
- the recess may include a portion that is frustoconical in shape in order to help with sealing the marking element against the mold portion.
- the marking element may include a frustoconical portion along the first end that is configured for complementary receipt into the recess.
- a tire mold having an interchangeable component for placing information on a sidewall of a tire.
- This tire mold includes a mold wall configured for contact with the sidewall of the tire.
- the mold wall defines a recess.
- a guide element extends into the recess.
- a stamp is provided that includes a cylindrical portion configured for placement into the recess.
- the cylindrical portion has a surface that defines a groove extending along the cylindrical portion with at least one change of direction whereby the groove of the cylindrical portion is configured for receipt of the guide element and the stamp to rotate when being placed into or removed from the recess.
- the stamp also has a sidewall contact surface for bearing information to be placed onto the sidewall of the tire.
- the cylindrical portion defines a distal end.
- a magnet can be provided and configured within the tire mold such that the magnet is positioned near the distal end of the cylindrical portion of the stamp whenever the stamp is positioned fully into the recess.

- stamp 20 is shown positioned in a recess 21 formed in mold elements 22 and 23 of a tire mold. Stamp 20 is located at a position in mold element 22 that contacts a sidewall portion 24 of a tire placed into the mold. Stamp 20 includes lettering 26 that provides information to be stamped onto sidewall portion 24.
- FIGS. 1 and 2 are by way of explanation and not limitation of the present invention.
- lettering 26 can be constructed to provide for marking sidewall portion 24 with raised marks, impressed marks, or both. Accordingly, the terms "stamp” or “mark” are used herein interchangeably herein and in the claims that follow to provide for raised marks, impressed marks, or both.
- stamp 20 is constructed from a cylindrically-shaped portion 28 having a first end 30 and a second end 32.
- the outer surface 34 of portion 28 defines a groove 36 that extends at least partially between first end 30 and second end 32.
- groove 36 changes direction twice along its length - first at point 38 and then at point 40. This change of direction ensures that stamp 20 rotates when as it is moved into or out of the recess 21 formed in mold element 23.
- groove 36 may include a straight angle, high angle, helix, and a variety of other shapes.
- a guide element or pin 44 is positioned in recess 21, extending from mold element 23.
- the position of pin 44 is fixed.
- groove 36 is aligned so that pin 44 can ride along groove 36.
- the cam action of pin 44 within groove 36 causes stamp 20 to rotate as it moves in or out of recess 21.
- This cam action serves at least two important functions. First, the relative orientation of groove 36 relative to lettering 26 ensures that lettering 26 will always be in the desired position for contact with, and thus stamping of, sidewall portion 24. Second, during molding and curing operations, the rubber and other materials present in sidewall portion 24 may adhere to lettering 26 or the surrounding surface 46. When the tire is removed from the mold and pulled away from mold element 22, stamp 20 cannot be pulled from recess 21 without rotation. However, the rotation will cause the stamp 20 to break away from sidewall portion 24 and thereby overcome adhesion. A frustoconical surface 51 on stamp head 50 ensures a mating seal between stamp 20 and mold element 22.
- a magnet 48 is positioned at the end of recess 21 at a position proximate to the second end 32 of stamp 20 when it is placed into recess 21.
- Stamp 20, or at least the second end thereof is constructed from a metal that can be attracted by a magnet. Consequently, magnet 48 urges stamp 20 to remain fully inserted into recess 21.
- magnet 38 will cause stamp 20 to return back into its seated position within recess 21 and therefore its proper orientation.
- a slight space is provided between second end 32 of cylindrically-shaped portion 28 and magnet 48. Such is provided to ensure that stamp 20 will fully seat and seal itself against mold element 22.
- stamp 20 is readily removable from recess 21. Removal can be accomplished, for example, by placing a magnet stronger than magnet 48 near the lettering 26 on stamp head 50. Stamp 20 can thereby be readily pulled from recess 21 for changing to another stamp 20 having the desired lettering 26.
- groove 36 could be formed on the walls of recess 21 and pin 44 could by fixed to portion 28.
- various other shapes and configurations for surface 51 can be used to ensure a seal with mold element 22.
- various other elements could be used in place of magnet 48 including, by way of example only, an electromagnet, vacuum, or other means.

Abstract
L'invention concerne un élément de marquage ou une estampe facilement interchangeable (20) pour moules à pneumatiques (22). Comme les informations (26) à porter sur une surface de pneu, telles que le flanc (24), sont appelées à changer, la présente invention concerne un dispositif pratique permettant de modifier facilement ces informations pendant la fabrication. Sont également décrites des caractéristiques relatives à l'orientation correcte de l'estampe dans le pneumatique et l'assise correcte du timbre au moment du retrait du pneumatique hors du moule.
