Stamp 20 includes lettering 26 that provides information to be stamped onto sidewall portion 24.

  • lettering 26 can be constructed to provide for marking sidewall portion 24 with raised marks, impressed marks, or both. Accordingly, the terms "stamp” or “mark” are used herein interchangeably herein and in the claims that follow to provide for raised marks, impressed marks, or both.
  • stamp 20 is constructed from a cylindrically-shaped portion 28 having a first end 30 and a second end 32.
  • the outer surface 34 of portion 28 defines a groove 36 that extends at least partially between first end 30 and second end 32.
  • groove 36 changes direction twice along its length - first at point 38 and then at point 40. This change of direction ensures that stamp 20 rotates when as it is moved into or out of the recess 21 formed in mold element 23.
  • groove 36 may include a straight angle, high angle, helix, and a variety of other shapes.
  • a guide element or pin 44 is positioned in recess 21, extending from mold element 23.
  • the position of pin 44 is fixed.
  • groove 36 is aligned so that pin 44 can ride along groove 36.
  • the cam action of pin 44 within groove 36 causes stamp 20 to rotate as it moves in or out of recess 21.
  • This cam action serves at least two important functions. First, the relative orientation of groove 36 relative to lettering 26 ensures that lettering 26 will always be in the desired position for contact with, and thus stamping of, sidewall portion 24. Second, during molding and curing operations, the rubber and other materials present in sidewall portion 24 may adhere to lettering 26 or the surrounding surface 46. When the tire is removed from the mold and pulled away from mold element 22, stamp 20 cannot be pulled from recess 21 without rotation. However, the rotation will cause the stamp 20 to break away from sidewall portion 24 and thereby overcome adhesion. A frustoconical surface 51 on stamp head 50 ensures a mating seal between stamp 20 and mold element 22.
  • a magnet 48 is positioned at the end of recess 21 at a position proximate to the second end 32 of stamp 20 when it is placed into recess 21.
  • Stamp 20, or at least the second end thereof is constructed from a metal that can be attracted by a magnet. Consequently, magnet 48 urges stamp 20 to remain fully inserted into recess 21.
  • magnet 38 will cause stamp 20 to return back into its seated position within recess 21 and therefore its proper orientation.
  • a slight space is provided between second end 32 of cylindrically-shaped portion 28 and magnet 48. Such is provided to ensure that stamp 20 will fully seat and seal itself against mold element 22.
  • stamp 20 is readily removable from recess 21. Removal can be accomplished, for example, by placing a magnet stronger than magnet 48 near the lettering 26 on stamp head 50. Stamp 20 can thereby be readily pulled from recess 21 for changing to another stamp 20 having the desired lettering 26.
  • groove 36 could be formed on the walls of recess 21 and pin 44 could by fixed to portion 28.
  • various other shapes and configurations for surface 51 can be used to ensure a seal with mold element 22.
