Definitions
- Earthlink provides a challenge message system using an "Allowed Sender Request Form.”
- Such affirmative response techniques are effective, but not fail-safe since they rely on the user to take action in order to let certain senders through, i.e. it requires the user to monitor for false positives and manage legitimate senders since it treats all unknown senders the same.
- the "Allowed Sender Request Form" is particularly burdensome for business users who often receive email from unknown senders and do not wish to spend time monitoring junkmail folders or responding to requests for authorization.
- a number of systems are in use for communicating a human intelligible
- the new system can be operated remotely so it does not need to consume the user's bandwidth and it applies simultaneously to all retrieval points and platforms.
- the method utilizes human language and comprehension as a means of filtering the email.
- the user sets a rule for incoming electronic messages, such as email, so that messages that contain a certain pass-phrase (preferably in the subject line) will always be accepted.
- An automatic reply to blocked senders instructs them on how to bypass the trap using the pass-phrase.
- the user can change the pass- phrase as often as needed and can set white lists and black lists. Changes to email routes or MX records are not required.
- server-side processing systems may be used in the present invention as long as the system can reject filtered email, forward it to another address and accept a rule to automatically pass email containing a designated pass-phrase, preferably in the subject line. Additionally, once the system of this invention is deployed into public use, mail servers will require a means of detecting that a given message is an
- This invention represents an ideal spam trap, it does not require the user to download email in order to filter it, it applies to all retrieval points and platforms at once, it provides a reliable mechanism for avoiding false positives by using human-dependant instructions to bypass the trap, it does not require rerouting MX records, and it can reside anywhere on the Internet.
- this invention is fail-safe in that the user is not required to monitor a junkmail folder for false positives or take action to allow email from unknown senders to be delivered, the system operates unattended and without ⁇ burden on the user. Since filtered senders are ultimately differentiated by whether or not they are human, this system allows even unknown senders to reach the user without user interaction but blocks computer generated mass email. This is particularly important for business users who are often receiving email from individuals who are not already known to them.
- this invention may be applied to other types of communications in addition to traditional POP3, IMAP or MS Exchange email, such as instant messages (“IM”) , short message services (“SMS”), hypertext transport protocol (“HTTP”), wireless local area networks (“LAN”) connections, ad-hoc computer networks, or other electronic communication protocols (collectively “electronic messages”) or analog signals such as radio.
- IM instant messages
- SMS short message services
- HTTP hypertext transport protocol
- LAN wireless local area networks
- ad-hoc computer networks or other electronic communication protocols (collectively “electronic messages”) or analog signals such as radio.
- the challenge or instructional message could be any combination of communications in addition to traditional POP3, IMAP or MS Exchange email, such as instant messages (“IM”) , short message services (“SMS”), hypertext transport protocol (“HTTP”), wireless local area networks (“LAN”) connections, ad-hoc computer networks, or other electronic communication protocols (collectively “electronic messages”) or analog signals such as radio.
- IM instant messages
- SMS short message services
- LAN local area networks
- electronic messages collectively "electronic messages”
- FIG 1 is a flow chart of a "spam trap" system according to my present invention.
- Filtered electronic messages such as, for example, the email in this example, is sent back to the sender who then comprehends the instructions to modify the subject line of their original email with a pass-phrase and resend it.
- a rule is set on the server to accept all email with the pass-phrase anywhere in the subject line (in this case, "filtered” using wildcards (*'s) i.e. * filtered* so that the position of the word in the subject line does not matter).
- the modified message bypasses the filter after being resent the subject is prepended with the word "Trapped.” In this way the user is automatically alerted that the sender bypassed the trap and additional processing, such as white or black listing, can be facilitated.
