Definitions

  • Earthlink provides a challenge message system using an "Allowed Sender Request Form.”
  • Such affirmative response techniques are effective, but not fail-safe since they rely on the user to take action in order to let certain senders through, i.e. it requires the user to monitor for false positives and manage legitimate senders since it treats all unknown senders the same.
  • the "Allowed Sender Request Form" is particularly burdensome for business users who often receive email from unknown senders and do not wish to spend time monitoring junkmail folders or responding to requests for authorization.

  • This invention represents an ideal spam trap, it does not require the user to download email in order to filter it, it applies to all retrieval points and platforms at once, it provides a reliable mechanism for avoiding false positives by using human-dependant instructions to bypass the trap, it does not require rerouting MX records, and it can reside anywhere on the Internet.
  • this invention is fail-safe in that the user is not required to monitor a junkmail folder for false positives or take action to allow email from unknown senders to be delivered, the system operates unattended and without ⁇ burden on the user. Since filtered senders are ultimately differentiated by whether or not they are human, this system allows even unknown senders to reach the user without user interaction but blocks computer generated mass email. This is particularly important for business users who are often receiving email from individuals who are not already known to them.
