Definitions

  • the invention relates to a massage device as defined in the preamble of claim 1.
  • Tension in the shoulder area can also be relaxed by means of massage of the neck and shoulders.
  • Massage is most effective when performed by another person, especially a professionally trained person.
  • people do not always have time or the opportunity to get professional massage or massage from somebody in the neighbourhood.
  • Various aids have been developed in order to allow persons to massage their shoulders themselves in such situations.
  • the manually operated massage device disclosed in US Patent Application 2004/0249325 can be cited as an example of devices operated with the user's muscular strength.
  • the device consists of two elongated handles and an interconnecting plate.
  • Various massage heads can be fixed to the plate connecting the handles by means of snap-in fasteners.
  • the massage device is operated by shifting the massage head over the user's back and shoulders by means of handles passing over the shoulders.
  • the replaceable massage heads of this massage device are designed as different types of nodules or fingers. They allow for massage of a given type alone, and they may feel uncomfortable when pressed against the user's skin.
  • the massage device of the invention is characterised by the features defined in claim 1.
  • the massage device of the invention is ergonomic and it allows readily for back massage without muscle tension during the massage.
  • the massage device of the invention provides long massage paths and excellent massage force with a small effort, and it can also be used while the patient is wearing his/her clothes.
  • the massage device of the invention is versatile and easy to dismantle for storage or transport, if necessary.
  • Figure 1 illustrates the massage device of the invention viewed from the front
  • Figure 2 illustrates the massage device of an embodiment of the invention viewed from the front
  • Figure 3 illustrates the massage device of a second embodiment of the invention viewed from the front.
  • FIG. 1 illustrates the massage device of the invention viewed from the front.
  • the massage device consists of an elongated curved handle 1 with grip handles 2 at its ends.
  • the handle 1 may be made e.g. of aluminium, glass fibre or any other light material.
  • the grip handles 2 may be made e.g. of foam plastic, rubber or any other soft material that feels pleasant in the user's hands.
  • the grip handle is preferably made of an anti-perspirant material that is easy to keep clean.
  • a fixing point for a small wheel 3 has been provided at the centre of the handle 1. This wheel is attached to the handle 1 on a shaft 4 so as to allow free rotation of the wheel 3 about the shaft.
  • the user grips the grip handles 2 at each end of the handle 1 and brings the device behind his/her back.
  • the massage device is pressed against the back or shoulders with the wheel 3 pressed against the muscles requiring massage.
  • the user can move the wheel 3 over his/her back, so that the wheel 3 produces a massaging movement while moving over the back.
  • Figure 2 illustrates the massage device of one embodiment of the invention, which differs from the one shown in figure 1 in that the handle consists of two detachable handles 5a and 5b.
  • the detachable parts are fixed to the centre 7 of the handle by locking tongues 6a and 6b.
  • the locking tongues 6a and 6b can be locked by spring force, for instance, or they may be stationary, such as fixing screws.
  • FIG. 3 illustrates a massage device of a second embodiment of the invention.
  • the handle is divided at its centre into two symmetrical joint parts 8a and 8b. These joint parts 8a and 8b are interconnected at the mounting shaft 4 of the wheel 3.
  • the massage device of this embodiment also comprises a resistance means 9, which may be a spring or a hydraulic cylinder, for instance. This resistance means 9 is fixed by its ends to fixing lugs 10a and 10b of the two joint parts 8a and 8b of the handle.
  • the massage device of this embodiment is usable not only for the massage function described above, but also as a fitness-training device.
  • the user can press the massage device against his/her back by gripping the device at its two grip handles 2. After this, the user may strengthen his/her muscles by bending the handles of the massage device towards each other, while the resistance means 9 resists the bending movement. Owing to a hydraulic damper, the exercise can be carried out both as a closing movement and an opening movement. The user may also strengthen his/her muscles with the device located in front of the user, without the device supported on the user's body.
  • FIG 3 illustrates the massage device used as a fitness-training device in a preferred embodiment comprising detachable handle parts 5a and 5b; however, this is but an example of optional solutions, which are not necessarily such as illustrated here.
  • a massage device equipped with detachable handles can also be used with only one of the handles removed.
  • the user may generate a massage movement in the back area by using only one of his/her hands.
