Definitions
- the present invention relates to firearm cartridges, in particular to a cartridge for cannons, other pieces of heavy artillery or similar firearms.
- firearm cartridges in particular to a cartridge for cannons, other pieces of heavy artillery or similar firearms.
- Known firearms are commonly characterized by the use of ammunition, in particular cartridges, comprising a case containing gunpowder, closed at the front by a projectile.
- ammunition in particular cartridges, comprising a case containing gunpowder, closed at the front by a projectile.
- Currently, the development of ammunition and firearms has reached such levels that, although desirable, any further increase in the ballistic performance is increasingly more arduous and difficult to achieve.
- the main object of the present invention is to produce a cartridge with constructional and functional characteristics which further accelerate the combustion process of the propellant, or propelling charge, to obtain acceleration of the delivery of compressed combustion gases in the cavity containing the propellant and, consequently, a further increase in the velocity of the projectile along the barrel of the firearm.
- the cartridge forming the object of the invention is provided with an innovative priming device, the incendiary operation of which is capable of activating total and instant ignition of the propellant. The maximum pressure value is thereby reached with a velocity 15-20 times higher than the normal velocity in the prior art.
- this cartridge is capable of imparting a greater velocity to the projectile along the barrel, resulting in a noteworthy increase in the precision of the shot and of the kinetic energy of the projectile at the time of impact on the target, this being proportional to the square of the velocity.
- the present invention proposes to obtain the objectives discussed above by producing a cartridge having the characteristics of claim 1 and a shooting process as claimed in claim 8.
- the cartridge of the invention is particularly suitable to be used in cannons of any bore, even those having an extremely short barrel length.
- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the cartridge according to the invention before the shot;
- Figure 2 is a sectional view of the cartridge in Figure 1 during the ignition phase of the propellant;
- Figure 3 is a sectional view of a first component of the cartridge in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 4a is a view of a second component of the cartridge in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 4b is a top view of the second component in Figure 4a;
- Figure 5 is a sectional view of part of a firearm comprising a embodiment of cartridge according to the invention.
- FIG. 6 is a sectional view of the embodiment of cartridge shown in Figure 5. Detailed description of preferred embodiments of the invention With reference to Figures from 1 to 4b, there is shown a cartridge comprising:
- the second end of the case is instead closed by the body of the projectile 11 , inserted into the case and suitably secured in a known way.
- the cap device 4, disposed inside the case is provided with a stepped outer profile 4a in order to allow perfect coupling with the corresponding stepped inner profile 7a of the case 7.
- profiles 4a and 7a have a cylindrical shape in the plane. Alternatively, they may have a prismatic shape.
- the cap device 4 Before the shot the cap device 4 is inserted telescopically and fixed in the case 7 so that the folds 8' of the cap device 4 and shoulders 8 of the case 7 do not come into contact with each other, thereby producing chambers 2 provided with suitable explosive mixtures of fulminate primer or second propellant.
- the cap device 4 has, on each of the folds 8', at least a series of vents or holes 4c, or more generally passages of suitable dimensions and sufficient to allow passage of the explosion products caused by an impact between folds and shoulders.
- These series of passages 4c are arranged, for example, concentrically with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cap device, as shown in Figure 4b.
- the priming cap 9, or simply primer, and relative striker 9a, are provided in the bottom of the case 7.
- a first propellant such as gunpowder of a known type.
- the primer 9 is in communication with the inside of the case itself 7 through a central hole on the bottom of the case, and is therefore in contact with the first propellant.
- each incandescent jet, discharged through the corresponding vent, in ignition involves a portion of the cavity of the first propellant corresponding to approximately 1/20 of the total volume thereof.
- the velocity with which gaseous pressure is produced is consequently approximately 15-20 times greater than the normal velocity obtained with prior art devices. Therefore, the velocity of the combustion process of the first propellant is such that combustion is almost totally completed before the projectile starts to accelerate along the barrel. Therefore, the increase in pressure in the area behind the projectile is capable of determining rapid forward movement of the projectile inside the firing chamber of the firing barrel with noteworthy acceleration of the projectile itself towards the muzzle of the barrel, thus obtaining improved ballistic performance and increased kinetic energy upon impact on the target.
- the first and second propellant can also be of the same type.
- the cartridge of the invention includes a projectile of the APFSDS ("Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot") type for cannons. Nonetheless, the same cartridge and the relative propulsion concept can be used to shoot any projectile.
- APFSDS Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot
- the cartridge of the present invention and the relative shooting process can also be applied to firearms having one or more supplementary firing chambers.
- the cartridge of the invention can, in fact, be used as a supplementary blank cartridge to provide supercharge energy for the thrust of the projectile; said supplementary cartridge forms the object of the document WO2004070308.
- the supplementary cartridge 6, without projectile comprises inside the case a cap device 15 which, in this embodiment, alone forms the cavity 10 containing the first propellant.
- this cap device 15 has a closed form provided with one or more vents at the rear end thereof, the front end having a tapered star shape, i.e. with a front view substantially in the shape of a star.
- This closing device is preferably made of plastic or metal. The embodiment thereof with folds and stress raisers at the end promotes the rupture or opening thereof at the moment of explosion of the first and second propellants.
- the cartridge 6 is inserted during the loading procedure of the firearm into the supplementary firing chamber 14 and blanked in advance by a screw or other appropriate mechanism.
- first propellant gases are produced by the combustion of a third propellant contained in the primary cartridge 12. These first gases, at high pressure, accelerate the projectile in the usual way inside the firing chamber of the firing barrel 13, moving the projectile at high speed towards the muzzle of the barrel.
- part of the first propulsion gases at high pressure enters the firing chamber 14 determining a sudden increase in the pressure therein.
- Explosion of the cartridge 6 produces a further, extremely strong and instant increase in the gaseous pressure which, after having violently opened the tapered front end of the cap device 15, breaks through the same communication holes 13a in the area of the barrel 13 behind the projectile, which is thereby further accelerated by the pressure of the first and second gases produced by two separate sequential propulsive explosions.
