Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine, in particular a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with an engine brake unit, at least one brake valve being provided for each cylinder, preferably in addition to intake and exhaust valves. The brake valve opens into a common pressure container (brake rail), said brake valve being opened at least once during the engine operation, before, at the start of and/or during the compression phase of the cylinder. The aim of the invention is to regulate the braking power in the simplest possible manner. To achieve this, the braking power of the engine brake unit is controlled by modifying the control times of the brake valve, preferably the closing time of the brake valve.
