Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine (1), in particular of a motor vehicle, wherein the internal combustion engine (1) comprises a plurality of cylinders (3) controlled by gas exchange valves (5, 6) and an intake air system (7) feeding intake air to the cylinders (3) in an engine block (2), said intake air system comprising at least one auxiliary valve (30) disposed upstream of the associated gas exchange valves (5, 6) in an intake air channel (8', 8") leading to at least two cylinders (3), wherein the respective auxiliary valve (30) is operated so that open phases (A) in which the auxiliary valve (30) opens the intake air channel (8', 8") alternate with closed phases (B) in which the respective auxiliary valve (30) closes the air intake channel (30), wherein the respective auxiliary valve (30) is further operated so that a separate opening phase (A) is generated for each associated cylinder (3). An improved efficiency can be achieved if the respective auxiliary valve (30) is operated so that opening phases (A) of different sizes are generated for the associated cylinders (3) that follow directly one after the other.
