Definitions
- the present invention relates to a two-dimensional photonic crystal used in an optical device such as an optical multiplexer / demultiplexer.
- light used in the present application includes electromagnetic waves other than visible light.

- a photonic crystal is a dielectric in which a periodic structure is formed.
- This periodic structure is generally formed by periodically arranging regions having different refractive indexes from the dielectric body (different refractive index regions) in the dielectric body. Due to the periodic structure, a band structure related to the energy of light is formed in the crystal, and an energy region in which light cannot be propagated is formed. Such an energy region is called a “photonic band gap (PBG)”.
- PBG photonic band gap
- Defect level is formed, and only light having a wavelength corresponding to the defect level can exist in the vicinity of the defect.
- a defect formed in a dot shape can be used as an optical resonator of light of that wavelength, and a defect formed in a line shape can be used as a waveguide.
- Patent Document 1 discloses that a waveguide is formed by periodically disposing a different refractive index region in a main body (slab) and providing a defect in a linear shape in the periodic arrangement. Describes a two-dimensional photonic crystal in which point defects are formed adjacent to the waveguide.
- the This two-dimensional photonic crystal functions as a demultiplexer that extracts light with a wavelength that matches the resonance wavelength of the resonator from various wavelengths propagating in the waveguide, and is introduced into the external force waveguide. It also functions as a multiplexer.
- the number of multiplexing can be increased by a factor of 2 compared to the case where it is not performed (polarization). Multiple).
- the conventional optical multiplexer / demultiplexer using a two-dimensional photonic crystal cannot use both TE polarization and TM polarization of the same frequency independently. Difficult to do.
- Patent Document 2 describes a two-dimensional photonic crystal in which a complete PBG is formed by periodically arranging triangular (triangular prism-like) holes in a triangular lattice pattern in a slab-like body. .
- light having a frequency within the complete PBG can use TE polarization and TM polarization independently.

- Patent Document 2 Japanese Unexamined Patent Application Publication No. 2004-294517 ([0021] to [0022], [0041] to [0043], FIG. 1, FIGS. 14 to 17)
- a point-like defect for introducing TE polarized light into the waveguide force extraction Z waveguide and a TM polarization extracted from the waveguide To Z waveguide
- parameters such as the period (lattice constant) size and shape of the different refractive index region, the thickness of the main body, and the refractive indexes of the main body and the different refractive index region.
- the parameter is set so that the condition for one polarization is optimal, the condition for the other polarization also changes. Therefore, it is difficult to design to meet the requirements for both polarizations.
- Such a problem is not limited to the polarization multiplexing optical multiplexer / demultiplexer described above, but photonic crystals using the difference between TE polarization and TM polarization, such as polarization separation elements and polarization dispersion compensators, are used. It occurs in common with the optical devices used.
- photonic crystals using the difference between TE polarization and TM polarization for example, when light of a specific wavelength is multiplexed / demultiplexed regardless of the difference in polarization, the same problem as above occurs. .
- the problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a two-dimensional photonic crystal that can easily satisfy the conditions for both TE polarization and TM polarization, and an optical device using the same. .
- a two-dimensional photonic crystal according to the present invention which has been made to solve the above problems, is formed by periodically providing a refractive index distribution on a slab-shaped body,
- the refractive index distribution of the first region is such that circular different refractive index regions are arranged in a triangular lattice pattern, and the refractive index distribution of the second region is an equilateral triangle.
- the different refractive index regions may be arranged in a triangular lattice shape.
- the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention can further include a waveguide that passes through both the first region and the second region.
- the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention provided with the waveguide further has a polarization corresponding to the region in the vicinity of the waveguides in the first region and the second region, that is, photonics in the region. It is possible to provide a resonator that resonates the polarized wave in which the band gap is formed.
- the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention including the waveguide and the resonator further passes through either the first region or the second region, and the resonator in the one region together with the waveguide.
- a second waveguide formed so as to sandwich the gap can be provided.
- the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention including the waveguide and the resonator further passes through both the first region and the second region, and sandwiches the resonator in both regions together with the waveguide.
- a second waveguide can be provided.
- the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention including the waveguide is formed as a single structural unit, and a plurality of the structural units are connected to form a two-dimensional structure in which the waveguides of all the structural units are continuous. Photonic crystals can be constructed.

- FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram of PBG in a two-dimensional photonic crystal according to the present invention.
- FIG. 3 is a plan view of one embodiment of a two-dimensional photonic crystal according to the present invention.
- FIG. 4 is a plan view of a two-dimensional photonic crystal of a comparative example.
- FIG. 5 is a photonic band diagram of the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the comparative example and this example.
- FIG. 6 is a plan view of the two-dimensional photonic crystal of this example in which a waveguide and a resonator are formed.
- FIG. 7 Photonic band diagram of the two-dimensional photonic crystal of Fig. 6.
- FIG. 11 is a plan view of a two-dimensional photonic crystal having a structure in which two sets of similar polarized heterostructures are connected to each other.
- the two-dimensional photonic crystal according to the present invention also includes a first region having TE-PBG and a second region force having TM-PBG formed in one two-dimensional photonic crystal.
- the first region can be the same as a conventional two-dimensional photonic crystal with TE-PBG
- the second region can be the same as a conventional two-dimensional photonic crystal with TM-PBG. it can.
- the first region PBG and the second region PBG have a common energy region (frequency region).
- the parameters such as the period and size of the different refractive index regions in the first region and the second region, the thickness of the main body, and the refractive indexes of the main body and the different refractive index region are set.
- the common energy region can be formed easily and wider than the conventional one.
- one PBG in this figure, the PBG in the second region
- the entire energy region of the one PBG is the common energy region 13.
- TM-PBG As long as TE-PBG is formed in the first region, more TM-PBG may be formed. Similarly, as long as TM-PBG is formed in the second region, further TE-PBG may be formed. -PBG may be formed. Even if TE-PBG and TM-PBG are formed in one region, TE-PBG is used in the first region rather than using both TE-PBG and TM-PBG in that region. It is desirable to use TM-PBG in the two areas because it has the advantage that a large common energy area can be obtained and that it is easy to set optimal conditions for each polarization. .
- the first region can be formed by providing a circular different refractive index region in a triangular lattice shape on the main body.
- the second region can be formed by providing triangular different refractive index regions in a triangular lattice shape on the main body.
- the first region and the second region can be formed by other configurations.
- the thickness and refractive index of the main body among the above parameters are First area And it is desirable to be the same in the second area.
- the first region and the second region are formed by appropriately setting the period 'size and shape of the anomalous refractive index region.
- the different refractive index region can be formed by embedding a substance having a refractive index different from that of the main body into the main body, but it is easier to manufacture by forming holes in the main body, This is desirable because the difference in refractive index from the main body can be increased.
- the two-dimensional photonic crystal in which the first region and the second region are formed in this way reflects both TE-polarized light and TM-polarized light having a frequency in the frequency region corresponding to the common energy region. It can be used for a photonic crystal mirror. Furthermore, in order to apply the two-dimensional photonic of the present invention to various optical functional elements, a waveguide or a resonator can be provided in the two-dimensional photonic crystal as described below.
- a waveguide passing through the first region and the second region can be provided in the two-dimensional photonic crystal in which the first region and the second region are formed. Similar to the conventional two-dimensional photonic crystal, this waveguide can be formed by linearly providing defects with a periodic refractive index distribution. Further, the frequency band (pass frequency band) of light that can pass through the waveguide can be appropriately set by adjusting the width of the waveguide, the parameters of the different refractive index region, and the like. Also in this case, since the parameters can be set independently in the first region and the second region, a waveguide having a predetermined pass frequency band can be easily formed.
- an optical functional element can be manufactured as follows.
- the waveguide is formed so that the defect level of the same frequency is set in the PBG for the TE polarization in the first region and for the TM polarization in the second region.
- the first region parameters are set so that this frequency falls within the TM-photonic band (not PBG), which is the TM polarized wave guide band.
- the frequency force TE-PBG is included (when the triangular refractive index region is provided in a triangular lattice shape, not only for TM polarization but also for TE polarization). PBG can be formed).
- both TE polarization and TM polarization of the above frequency are introduced into the first region waveguide, both TE polarization and TM polarization can propagate through the first region waveguide.
- TE polarization and TM polarization can propagate through the first region waveguide.
- TM polarization cannot propagate in the waveguide in the second region, since it is in the above-mentioned frequency force TE-PBG, TE polarization cannot propagate, and only TM polarization can propagate. Therefore, The TE polarization of the above frequency is reflected at the boundary between the first region and the second region, whereas the TM polarization having the same frequency can pass through this boundary. Polarization can be separated.
- a resonator can be further provided in the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention.
- This resonator can be formed by a point defect in which defects in the different refractive index region are provided in a dot shape.
- Point-like defects can be formed by changing the diameter of the different refractive index region at the position where the defect is to be provided or by filling the different refractive index region (without providing the different refractive index region).
- the Point defects include simple point defects that have a force only in one refractive index region and cluster type defects that consist of a plurality of adjacent different refractive index regions. By forming such a point defect, a defect level is formed in the PBG, and light having a frequency corresponding to the defect level resonates in the point defect.
- the energy value of the defect level is determined by parameters such as the position, shape, and size of the point defect, and the period of the different refractive index region.
- a resonator that resonates with the TE polarized wave of the desired frequency is resonated in the first region
- a resonator that resonates with the TM polarized wave of the desired frequency is resonated in the second region.
- Each can be formed. Details of such a resonator are described in Patent Documents 1 and 2.
- the resonator can be designed independently without affecting each other in the first region and the second region in one two-dimensional photonic crystal.
- the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention provided with a resonator as described above can be used for various optical devices.
- a resonator that resonates with a TE polarized wave having a predetermined frequency is provided in the first region, and a resonator that resonates with a TM polarized wave with the same resonance frequency is provided in the second region.
- the waveguide should be formed so that both the TE polarization and TM polarization of the above frequency can be passed in the first area, and only the TM polarization of the above frequency can be passed in the second area.
- the GO second region is formed so that both the TE polarized wave and TM polarized wave can pass through, and the first region is formed so that only the TE polarized wave with the above frequency can pass through.
- the polarization multiplexing duplexer configured as described above, among the TE polarized wave and TM polarized wave having the above-mentioned frequency propagating through the waveguide, the TE polarized wave is supplied from the resonator in the first region, and the TM polarized wave is supplied to the second polarized wave. Demultiplex from each region's resonator.
- the TE polarized wave of the above frequency is multiplexed from the first region resonator and the TM polarized wave from the second region resonator to the waveguide.
- TE polarization and TM polarization having the same frequency can be used independently.
- a second waveguide may be further provided in the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention.
- the second waveguide is formed so as to pass through either the first region or the second region and sandwich the resonator in that region together with the first waveguide.
- light having a wavelength and polarization resonating with the resonator can be extracted to the second waveguide.
- light having a wavelength and polarization resonating with the resonator can be combined with the second waveguide force through the resonator to the first waveguide.
- One second waveguide may be provided in each of the first region and the second region.
- the second waveguide may be formed so as to pass through both the first region and the second region, and to sandwich the resonator together with the first waveguide in both regions! /.
- This two-dimensional photonic crystal can be used as a polarization-independent frequency (wavelength) multiplexer / demultiplexer that demultiplexes and multiplexes light of a predetermined frequency without depending on the polarization.
- the periodic structure, waveguide, and resonator have a configuration suitable for only one of TE polarization and TM polarization, and therefore propagate through the waveguide. Part of the other polarized light was lost without being demultiplexed! /.
- the TE polarized wave of a predetermined frequency is obtained by the resonator in the first region, and the TM polarized wave at the frequency is obtained by the resonator in the second region. Since it is demultiplexed into the second waveguide, no such loss occurs.
- a two-dimensional photonic crystal can be formed in which the first region and the second region are used as a single structural unit and a plurality of the structural units are connected to each other, and the waveguides of all the structural units are connected.
- this two-dimensional photonic crystal for example, by providing resonators with different resonance frequencies for each structural unit, TE polarization and TM polarization can be used independently for a plurality of frequencies. Can be formed.
- TE polarization and TM polarization can be multiplexed and demultiplexed independently for each of these multiple frequencies, so that the number of multiplexing is doubled compared to the case where polarization is not distinguished.
- An optical multiplexer / demultiplexer can be obtained.
- FIG. 3 shows an example of the basic structure of the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the present invention.
- the main body 20 is formed into a plate shape (slab shape) using a material having a refractive index sufficiently higher than that of air, such as Si or InGaAsP.
- the main body 20 includes a first region 21 and a second region 22.
- Circular holes 23 (different refractive index regions) are arranged in the first region 21, and equilateral triangular holes 24 are arranged in the second region 22 in a triangular lattice pattern.
- this configuration forms a TE-PBG force in the first region and a TM-PBG in the second region.
- polarization heterostructure such a structure in which the region where the TE-PBG is formed and the region where the TM-P BG is formed is referred to as a “polarization heterostructure”.
- This two-dimensional photonic crystal has regular triangular vacancies arranged in a triangular lattice shape, and has the same configuration as the second region 22 of this embodiment (FIG. 3).
- This configuration is known to form TE-PBG and TM-PBG in one two-dimensional photonic crystal! (Patent Document 2).
- the period of the holes is a
- the thickness of the main body is 0.6a
- the radius of the circular holes in the first region of this example is 0.35a
- the equilateral triangle vacancy in the second region and the comparative example The length of one side of the hole was 0.95a.
- the refractive index of the main body was set to 3.4 (the refractive index of Si).
- FIGS. 5 (a) and (c) The band diagrams of the two-dimensional photonic crystal of the comparative example are shown in FIGS. 5 (a) and (c), and the band diagrams of the two-dimensional photonic crystal of this example are shown in FIGS. 5 (b) and (d). Each is shown.
