  • the locking means 35 comprises two groups of holes 37 positioned on opposed sides of the wall structure 17.
  • Each group of holes 37 comprises two sets of upper holes 39 in the upper body section 31 and two sets of holes 41 in the lower body section 33.
  • the two sets of upper holes 39 are positioned one alongside the other, and also the two sets of lower holes 41 are positioned alongside each other, as shown in the drawings.
  • Each set of holes comprises a plurality of holes 43 arranged at spaced intervals in a vertical row.
  • the upper set of holes 39 comprises first and second rows 45 and 47
  • the lower set of holes 41 comprises first and second rows 48, 49.
  • the two first rows 45, 48 are in vertical alignment, as are the two second rows 47, 49.
  • the two body sections 31 , 33 can be moved telescopically one with respect to the other and secured in any position corresponding to a location where there is alignment between holes in the upper set of holes 39 and holes in the lower set of holes 41.
  • the securing means 35 further comprises locking pins 51 adapted to be received in the aligned holes thereby to secure the upper and lower body sections 31 , 33 together.
  • the locking pins 51 for each group of holes 37 is defined by a common locking member 53.
  • the locking member 53 comprises a U-shaped member having two leg portions 55 interconnected by a bridge portion 57. Each leg portion 55 provides a respective one of the locking pins 51.
  • a sealing means 61 is provided at the overlap between the upper and lower body sections 31 , 33 to prevent ingress of dirt and other matter into the gap therebetween. It is particularly useful to exclude dirt and debris from the gap between the overlapping body sections 31 , 33 as it can contribute to jamming of the two body sections together at some later stage when there is a need to move the upper section relative to the lower section.
  • the sealing means 61 comprises a brush seal 63 having a plurality of bristles 65 mounted on the upper face of the lip 34 provided on the lower body section 33.
  • the bristles 65 extend inwardly and brush against the exterior surface of the upper body section 31 , as best seen in Figure 4 of the drawings.
  • an internal brace 64 is optionally provided for the purpose of providing internal structural support to the body 15. This can be important in circumstances where the body 15 is constructed of plastics material and the surrounding ground surface is likely to be subjected to high loadings which could be transferred through the ground to the pit.
  • the base 19 is constructed so as to allow the pit 10 to be positioned on the telecommunications service line 11 without interference to the operation of the latter. This is achieved by constructing the base 19 in two base sections 71 , 72 movable between open and closed conditions. Each base section 71 , 72 is pivotally connected at hinge 73 to a respective one of opposed sides of the wall structure 17 for movement between an open condition as shown in Figure 2 and a closed condition as shown in Figure 3. In moving towards the open condition, each base section 71 , 72 pivots downwardly and outwardly away from the central pit area 25, thereby allowing the bottom edge of the sidewall structure 17 to rest upon the telecommunications service line 11 , as shown in Figure 2.
  • the base sections 71 , 72 can be pivoted inwardly and upwardly so as to embrace the telecommunications service line 11 , as shown in Figure 3.
  • the base sections 71 , 72 each have "cut-out" portions 75 which cooperate to define a port 77 at each end through which the telecommunication service line 11 extends.
  • the port 77 is provided with a seal 79 for sealing between the body 15 of the pit and the telecommunications service line 11 to inhibit ingress of dirt and other unwanted matter.
  • the seal 79 comprises a brush seal 81 constructed in two brush sections 82, 83, one associated with each of the base sections 71 , 72, as best seen in Figure 2.
  • the brush seal 81 comprises bristles 85 which contact and lay against the telecommunications service line 11 for sealing interaction therewith.
  • each hinge based section 71 , 72 is provided with a handle for grasping the respective base section from the interior of the service pit.
  • a user would be kneeling on the ground surrounding the pit, reaching into the pit and grasping the base sections 71 , 72 by way of the handles to pivot them inwardly and upwardly from the open condition to the closed condition.
  • Locking means 91 are provided for selectively locking the two base sections 71 , 72 in the closed condition.
  • the locking means 91 can be of any appropriate form.
  • the pit 10 may be used to provide a new pit for accessing the service line 11 , or alternatively a replacement pit for a pre-existing pit.

  • the pre-existing pit is removed and the replacement pit installed, conveniently using the same hole for access to the service line 11.
  • the two base sections 71 , 72 are moved into the open condition, and the lower body section 33 is inserted into the hole.
  • the lower body section 33 is rested on the service line 11 , and then the base section 71 , 72 are pivoted inwardly and upwardly so as to embrace the service line 11 as previously described.
  • the upper body section 31 is then inserted into the lower body section 33 and moved telescopically with respect thereto until the top lip 27 is at an appropriate level with respect to the adjacent ground surface. Any minor height adjustments are then made to ensure that are holes 43 within the hole groups 37 in registration in order to allow the locking pins 51 to be inserted in order to secure the upper and lower body sections 31 , 33 together.
  • Holes within the hole groups 37 not occupied by the locking pins 51 can be sealed with removable plugs (not shown).
  • the removable plugs are installed and removed from the inside of the pit.
  • the internal brace 64 can be installed if required.
  • the installation of the pit can then be completed in the same manner as a conventional pit, with the hole 13 being filled around the pit body 15.
  • the securing means 37 involving a series of holes which provide a series of available positions of the upper body section relative to the lower body section is particularly convenient, as it provides a simple yet reliable way of securing the two body sections together. It is then advantageous that the rows of holes be provided in pairs, as this enhances stability of the overall pit involving the upper and lower sections connected together. From the foregoing, it is apparent that the present embodiment provides a simple yet highly effective pit which can be readily adjusted as necessary to accommodate changes in ground level. Further, the pit can be easily installed about an existing service line without interrupting operation of the service line.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un puits d'accès (10) destiné à être installé dans un trou (13) dans le sol afin de permettre l'accès à une canalisation souterraine (11). Le puits d'accès de l'invention (10) comprend un corps (15) qui définit une zone de puits centrale (25). Le corps (15) possède une structure de paroi latérale (17) qui entoure la zone de puits centrale (25), un dessus ouvert (21) apte à recevoir un couvercle (23), et une base (19). Le corps (15) comprend des sections de corps supérieure et inférieure (31, 33) qui peuvent se déplacer l'une par rapport à l'autre afin de faire varier la profondeur de la zone de puits (25). Les deux sections précitées (31, 33) se trouvent dans une relation de chevauchement partial, des moyens de verrouillage (35) permettant de fixer entre elles de manière libérable les sections en chevauchement (31, 33). Cet agencement permet d'offrir une structure de paroi latérale (17) qui peut être sélectivement étendue ou contractée afin de faire varier le niveau du dessus ouvert (21). La base (19) comprend des moyens qui permettent de fixer le puits d'accès (10) autour d'une canalisation (11) même lorsque cette dernière est déjà installée dans le sol, ce qui évite de devoir couper la canalisation (11) pour la placer à l'intérieur du puits (10).
