[背景技術] ィンクジェット記録装置は、 インクジェット記録へッドに設けられた微細な吐出口か らインク滴を吐出させ、 そのインク滴を紙や樹脂シ トなどの記録媒体に付着させるこ とにより所望の記録を行う。 インクジェット記録装置としては、 例えば、 吐出口からィ ンクを吐出するためのエネルギーを発生させるエネルギー発生素子として、 ピエゾ素子 などの電気機械変換体を用いたもの、 あるいは発熱抵抗体を有する電気熱変換素子によ つて液体を加熱してインク滴を吐出させるものを用いたものなどが使用されている。 この種のィンクジェット記録装置においては、 液体のィンクをィンクジェット記録へ ッドに供給するインク供給機構が設けられ、 このインク供給機構に対して内部にインク を収容するインクタンクが着脱自在に接続される構成になっている。 したがって、 イン クジェット記録装置は、 インクタンクが着脱自在に装着される装着部 (例えば、 インク ジエツト記録へッドを搭載して往復移動するキヤリッジゃインクタンクを保持するホル ダ等) を有している。 インクタンク内のインクが無くなったときには、 新規なインクタ ンクに交換することで記録を続けることができる。'
近年.は、 フルカラーで記録を行えるィンクジェット記録装置が主流になってきており、 記録に用いるインクの參色ィ匕が進んでいる。 それに伴い、 インクジェット記録装置には、 互いに異なる色のインクを収容する複数のインクタンクが装着される。 また、 インクタ ンク内のィンクが残り僅かとなったときに、 ユーザに対してィンクタンクの交換を促し たり、 必要に応じてインクジェット記録装置の記録動作を中断させたりするために、 従 来のインクジエツト記録装置は、 インクタンク內のインク残量を検出するシステムを有 している。
従来、 収容しているインクの残量や、 インクの色で分けられるインクタンクの種類を 認識おょぴ識別する方法としては、 ROM情報による電気的な方法、 インクタンクの種 類ごとにィンクタンクの形状を非互換にするメカ的な方法、 あるいは光の反射を利用す る光学的な方法、 インクタンクに電極を配置し電気抵抗の変化による電気的な方法等が 知られている。
これらの中でも、 光学的な方法としては、 特開平 8— 1 8 3 1 8 3号公報に開示され るように、 インク室内に光学的反射部材として反射板を有し、 インクの有無を検知する インクタンクや、 特開平 9— 1 7 4 8 7 7号公報 (対応: USP 6234603)、 特開平 1 0 - 3 2 3 9 9 3号公報 (対応: USP 6361136) に開示されるように、 光学的反射部材を 複数設け、 インクタンクの存在、 およびインクタンク内のインク残量レベルを検知する システムが知られている。
また、 特開平 9— 29989号公報 (対応: USP 6024428) には、 一つのフォトセン サによって、 インクタンクの有無とインクの有無とを検出可能なインクジエツト記録装 置が開示されている。
さらに、 ROM情報による電気的な方法としては、 インクタンクに搭載された ROM データと光学的に測定したデータを比較することによつて適正な色のィンクである力否 力を判別し、 また、 光学的に測定したデータによってインクの残量が僅少力否かを判断 するシステムが、 特開 2001— 328273号公報に開示されている。
以下に、 上述した従来の技術の中から、 特開平 10— 323993号公報に閛示され たシステムについて説明する。 図 11に、 光学的な検出手段を備えた従来のインクタン クを示す。 同図 (a) はその外観斜視図、 (b) は底面図、 (c) は ) の A— A' 線 断面図である。 また、 図 12は、 図 11に示すインクタンクの底部の反射の様子を説明 する図である。

以上のことから、 受光素子 1 6 0で検出された光の強度変化を見たとき、 ピーク値が 存在しなければインクタンク 1 0 7が装着されていない、 ピーク値が 1つであればイン クタンク 1 0 7は装着されているがインクが無い、 ピーク値が 2つあればインクタンク 1 0 7が装着されインクも有る、 と判断することができる。
し力 しながら、 上述した従来の検出システムでは、 以下に示すように特定の要求のみ に対応可能で、 別の要求を同時に満たすようには構成されていない。
つまり、 上述した構成では、 インクタンクの有無および収容されているインクの有無 は検出できるが、 インクタンクに収容されているインクの色は識別できない。 そのため、 それぞれ收容しているィンクの色が異なる複数のィンクタンクを装着するィンクジェッ ト記録装置においては、 装着位置を間違えてもそのことは検出されず、 インクタンクの 誤装着があると結果的に吐出されるインクの色が全く異なったものとなる。 光学的検出 手段を用いたインクタンクの誤装着に対しては、 例えば、 反射部材の位置をインクの色 ごとに変更することによって対処することは可能である。 し力 し、 昨今のインクジエツ ト記録装置においては多色化が進んでおり、 インクタンクを色ごとに対応した形状にす ることは、 生産コストの増大を招くとともに、 インクタンクの限られたスペース内で、 各々の反射部材をインクの色に応じて異なる位置とするのは非常に困難である。
また、 インクタンクの有無検出とインクの有無検出をそれぞれに対応した光学要素 (プリズムや反射部) で行う際、 1組の癸光素子およぴ受光素子すなわち 1つの光学ュ エツトで検出するためには、 2つの光学要素をキャリッジの移動方向と平行に配置する ことが考えられる。 このとき、 各光学要素で確実な検出を行えるようにするためには、 十分な反射光量を得る必要があるので、 光学要素と光学ユニットとの位匱関係が重要と なる。 そのため、 各部品やユニットの寸法精度や取り付け精度を考慮すると、 光学要素 にはある程度の大きさが必要となり、 インクタンクのサイズの大型化につながる。
上述した問題点は、 ィンクの多色化、 ィンクジェット記録装置の小型化、 生産コスト の低減化の観点から、 早期の解決が望まれている。
[発明の開示]
本発明は上記の課題に鑑みてなされたものであり、 その目的は、 1組の光学要素とフ オトセンサを用いて、 簡単な構成でありながら、 より確実なインク有無検出とインクタ ンク有無検出が可能であり、 し力も、 インクの多色化に伴う誤装着に対しても有効なィ ンクタンクおよびインクジエツト記録装置を提供することである。

前記筐体の光透過性の部分と前記光反射部材との間は、 前記ィンクが存在する空間で ある。
前記光反射部材は、 前記発光素子からの光を 1回の反射で前記受光素子に返す平板で 構成されても、 また前記発行素子からの を複数回の反射で前記受光素子に返すように 構成された多面体としてもよい。 特に、 光を複数回の反射するように構成した光反射部 材は、 前記インク室に入射した光を順次反射する 2つの反射面を有し、 該 2つの反射面 と前記筐体の内壁面との間にプリズム形状の前記空間が形成されるように前記筐体に一 体的に設けられた構造体とすることが好ましい。 また、 複数の反射面の角度が、 前記筐 体を構成する壁面に垂直に前記ィンク室の中に入射した光を前記壁面に垂直に前記ィン ク室の外へ出射するように設定されている構成が検知ュ-ットの小型ィ匕などの観点で好 適である。
本発明のインクタンクでは、 インク室を形成する筐体の外部から、 インク室内に設け られた光反射部材に向けて光を照射すると、 その光は光反射部材の各反射面でそれぞれ 反射して再び筐体の外へ出射する。 したがって、 この出射光の有無を検出することによ つて、 インクタンクの有無が検出される。 また、 光反射部材の反射面は、 インクタンク の筐体の内壁面との間にインク室と連通した空間を介して配されており、 筐体の外部か ら光反射部材に照射された光は、 ィンク室内にィンクが存在するときはィンク中を進行 し、 インクが存在しないときは空気中を進行する。 これにより、 インク室にインクが存 在するときとしないときとで、 筐体の外へ出射した光の強度が異なるので、 その違いに 基づいて、 インク室内のインクの有無検出が可能となる。 さらに、 光反射部材の反射面 で反射されて筐体の外へ出射する光の強度は、 インクの色によっても異なり、 これによ り、 インク室に収容されているインクの色も判別可能である。
また、 このインクタンクによれば、 光透過性の部材を介してインク室内に入射した光 を少なくとも 1つの反射面で反射してインク室の外へ出射させることによって、 上記と 同様に、 インクタンクがインクジェット記録装置に装着されている力否力、 およびイン ク室内のインクの有無が検出可能となる。
記録へッドからィンクを被記録媒体上に吐出して記録を行なうインクジェット記録装 置は以下を有する、

前記発光素子から出射する光の波長領域に受光感度を有する受光素子と、
を備え、 前記発光素子は、 出射する光の波長が可変である。
本発明のインクジエツト記録装置は、 保持部に装着されたインクタンクに対して光を 出射するための発光素子およびこの発光素子から出射する光の波長領域に受光感度を有 する受光素子を有しているので、 上述したインクタンクを用いて、 インクタンクの有無 およびインクタンク内のインクの有無の検出が可能となる。 [図面の簡単な説明]

[発明を実施するための最良の形態]
次に、 本発明の実施形態について図面を参照して説明する。
図 1は、 本発明の一実施形態によるィンクジェット記録装置の一部の概略構成を示す 平面図である。 .
記録へッド 1は、 ィンクを吐出して記録媒体 (不図示) に記録を行うインクジェット ッ式の記録へッドであり、 記録へッド 1に供給するィンクを収容しているィンクタンク 2 0と分離可能に連結される。 記録ヘッド 1とインクタンク 2 0とによってインクカー トリツジを構成している。 本実施形態では記録へッド 1とインクタンク 2 0とが分離可 能なインクカードリッジとしているが、 これらは分離不能に一体化されていてもよい。 レ、ずれの場合でも、 インクカートリツジは保持部であるキャリッジ 2に着脱自在に保持 される。 記録ヘッド 1は、 インクジ ット記録方式の中でも特に、 インクを吐出するた めに利用されるエネルギーとして熱エネルギーを発生する手段 (例えば電気熱変換体や レーザ光など) を備え、 その熱エネルギーによりインクの状態変ィヒを生起させる方式を 用いたものである、 それにより、 記録の高密度化、 高精細化を達成している。 インクの 吐出方式はこれに限られるものではなく、 ピエゾ素子といった電気機械変換素子を利用 したものも本発明には適用可能である。 さらに、 記録へッド 1をキヤリッジ 2と一体化 し、 インクタンク 2 0のみがキヤリッジ 2から着脱される構成としてもよい。
記録へッド 1は、 図中下向きにインクを吐出する姿勢でキャリッジ 2に着脱自在に搭 載されている。 キヤリ.ッジ 2は、' このインクジェット記録装置のフレームに支持された ガイド軸 3に摺動自在に設けられている。 また、 キャリッジ 2には、 キャリッジ ータ (不図示) の回転により駆動されるタイミングベルト (不図示) の一部位が固定され、 キヤリッジモータを正回転おょぴ逆回転させることによって、 キヤリッジ 2はガイド軸 3に沿って往復移動する。
記録ヘッド 1により記録が行われる記録媒体は、 自動給紙装置 (不図示) に積載され ている。 自動給紙装置を駆動させることにより、 自動給紙装置に積載されている記録媒 体が 1枚ずつ送り出される。 自動給紙装置から送り出された記録媒体は、 搬送ローラや 排紙ローラ等 (いずれも不図示) で構成される搬送機構によって、 記録ヘッド 1と対向 する領域に配置されたプラテン (不図示) 上を通過するように、 キャリッジ 2の移動方 向と交差する方向に搬送される。 自動給紙装置の動作および搬送機構の動作は、 フィー ドモータ (不図示) によって行われる。
キヤリッジ 2を往復移動させながら記録へッド 1からインク滴を吐出させることで記 録媒体に記録が行われる。 このとき、 キャリッジ 2の一方向への移動の都度、 または 1 往復移動の都度、 記録媒体を所定のピッチで間欠送りすることで、 記録媒体全体に対し て記録が行われる。
キヤリッジ 2往復移動範囲の一端であるホームポジションにキヤリッジ 2が位置して いるときに記録ヘッド 1と対向する部位には、 ヘッド回復機構 (不図示) が設けられて レ、る。 ヘッド回復機構は、 記録ヘッド 1の吐出状態を良好に保っための機構であり、'記 録ヘッド 1をキヤッビングするキャップ (不図示)、 記録ヘッド 1のインク吐出面を拭 うワイパー (不図示)、 記録ヘッド 1のインク吐出ノズルから強制的にインクを吸引す るための吸引ポンプ (不図示) などを有している。
へッド回復機構に隣接して、 光学ュニット 1 4が設置されている。 光学ュニット 1 4 は、 キャリッジ 2にインクタンク 2 0が搭載されている力否力 およびインクタンク 2 0内のインク残量を検出するとともに、 そのインクの色を判別するのに用いられる光学 センサであって、 光を出射する発光素子 1 5と、 発光素子 1 5から出射される光の波長 領域に受光感度を有する受光素子 1 6とを有する。 光学ユニット 1 4は、 キャリッジ 2 がその真上に移動してきたときに、 発光素子 1 5が、 キャリッジ 2に搭載されているィ ンクタンク 2 0の後述する光反射部材 2 7 (図 3も参照) に光を照射する向きに固定さ れている。 発光素子 1 5としては例えば L E Dを用いることができ、 受光素子 1 6とし ては例えばフォトトランジスタを用いることができる。 ここでは発光素子 1 5と受光素 子 1 6を一つのユエットとして設置しているが、 別々に設置してもよい。
図 2に、 図 1に示すキヤリッジに搭載されるインクカートリッジの一例の外観斜視図 を示す。 図 3に、 インクタンクの断面図を示す。
本構成例では、 インクタンク 2 0は、 記録へッド 1がー体に設けられたタンクホルダ 7に着脱自在に搭載され、 これらタンクホルダ 7とインクタンク 2 0とによってインク カートリッジが構成される。 これによつて、 インクタンク 2 0は、 キャリッジ 2 (図 1 参照) 力 ら単独で取り外すこともできるし、 インクカートリッジとして取り外すことも できる。
本例では、 タンクホルダ 7に搭載するインクタンク 2 0は、 シアンインクを収容する インクタンク 2 0 C、 イェローインクを収容するインクタンク 2 0 Y、 およびマゼンタ インクを収容するインクタンク 2 Ο Μの、 3種のインクタンク 2 0 C、 2 0 Y、 2 Ο Μ であり、 これらは互いに独立して着脱可能である。 インクタンク 2 0 C、 2 0 Y、 2 0 Μの、 タンクホルダ 7への着脱は、 インクタンク 2 0 C、 2 0 Y、 2 0 Μの外壁に設.け られたレバー ( 2 2 e) の操作が利用されて行うことができる。
インクタンク 2 0 C、 2 0 Y、 2 0 Μの有無検出、 インクタンク 2 0 C、 2 0 Y、 2 O M内のインク有無検出、 およびインクの色の判別の際には、 これら各インクタンク 2 O C、 2 0 Y、 2 O Mが光学ユニット 1 4 (図 1参照) の上方を順次通過するように、 キャリッジ 2 (図 1参照) を移動させる。 この移動は、 キャリッジ 2と光学ユニット 1 4とが各インクタンク 2 O C、 2 0 Y、 2 O Mの配列方向に相対的に移動さえすれば、 キャリッジ 2を停止した状態で光学ユニット 1 4を移動させてもよいし、 双方を移動さ せてもよい。 ·
なお、 以降の説明において ίま、 各インクタンク 2 0 C、 2 0 Y、 2 0を特に区別せず、 ' 単に 「インクタンク 2 0」 と表記する。 また、 ここでは搭载するインクタンク 2 0の数 が 3つである場合を例に挙げるが、 搭載するインクタンクの数はこれに限られるもので はなく、 1つや 2つであってもよいし、 4つ以上であっても要求される記録を達成する ために必要な数のィンクタンクを搭載することが可能である。
本発明において、 インクとは、 記録の際にインクジェット記録ヘッドから吐出されて 記録媒体に付着される液体すベてを意味し、 着色されたインクだけでなく、 例えば、 ィ ンクの滲み防止のために、 記録媒体へのィンクの付着前あるいは付着後に記録媒体に付 着される処理液も含む。 したがって、 インクの色といった場合、 その色には無色も含む。 次に、 図 3を参照して、 インクタンクの構成を説明する。 図 3は、 図 2に示すインク タンク 2 0の断面図である。
インクタンク 2 0は、 カップ部 2 2と蓋部 2 1とを有し、 これらで構成される筐体 2 3の中に構成される空間をインク室としてインクを収容している。 筐体 2 3の内部は、 下部に連通部 2 2 cを有してカップ部 2 2に形成された仕切壁 2 2 aによって 2つの空 間に仕切られている。 一方の空間は、 連通部 2 2 cを除いて密閉されてインクを直接収 容するインク収容室 2 5である。 他方の空間は、 インクを吸収して保持する負圧発生部 材 2 6を収納する負圧発生部材収納室 2 4である。 負圧発生部材収納室 2 4を形成する 壁面には、 記録ヘッド 1 (図 2参照) にインクを供給するために、 このインクタンク 2 0がタンクホルダ 7 (図 2参照) に装着されることによって記録ヘッド 1に接続される インク供給口 2 2 bと、 インクの消費に伴って外部からインクタンク 2 0内へ大気を導 入するための大気連通口 2 1 aとが形成されている。 このインクタンク 2 0の使用時の 姿勢 (記録動作可能に設置されたインクジェット記録装置に搭載した状態での姿勢) に おいて、 大気連通口 2 1 aが上方に位置し、 インク供給口 2 2 bが下方に位置するよう に、 大気連通口 2 1 aは蓋部 2 1に形成され、 ィンク供給口 2 2 bは力ップ部 2 2の底 壁に形成されている。 .
仕切壁 2 2 aの負圧発生部材収納室 2 4側の壁面には、 負圧発生部材収納室 2 4から ィンク収容室 2 5への大気導入を速やかにし、 負圧発生部材内のィンクの液面を特定の · 位置に安定ィヒさせるための構造として、 連通部 2 2 cから上向きに延びる気体導入溝 2 2 dが形成されている。 なお、 気体導入溝 2 2 dは設けなくても大気導入は可能である 力 あるほうがより安定なインク供給を行なえる。 また、 負圧発生部材収納室 2 4の内 部において、 大気連通口 2 1 aの周囲は、 負圧発生部材 2 6が存在しない空間 (パッフ ァ部) となっている。 負圧発生部材 2 6とインク供給口 2 2 bとの間には、 負圧発生部 材 2 6に吸収されているインクをインク供給口 2 2 bに導き易くするためのインク導出 部材 (以下では、 記録ヘッドの供給管との接続状態を圧接状態としていることから圧接 体とも称する。) 2 8が設けられている。
記録へッド 1かちのィンク吐出により負圧発生部材 2 6のィンクが消費され、 負圧発 生部材収納室 2 4内の気液界面 2 6 aが気体導入溝 2 2 dの上端に達すると、 以後のィ ンク消費に伴って大気連通口 2 1 aから負圧発生部材収納室 2 4内に空気が導入され、 導入された空気は連通部 2 2 cを通じてインク収容室 2 5に入る。 これに替わって、 ィ ンク収容室 2 5内のィンクが、 連通部 2 2 cを通じて負圧発生部材収納室 2 4に入り、 負圧発生部材 2 6に充填される。 この動作を気液交換動作という。
したがって、 記録へッド 1により負圧発生部材収納室 2 4内のインクが消費されても、 その消費量に見合う分のインクがインク収容室 2 5力 ら負圧発生部材 2 6に充填され、 負圧発生部材収納室 2 4内での気液界面 2 6 aがほぼ一定の高さに維持される。 つまり、 負圧発生部材 2 6はほぼ一定量のィンクを保持しており、 それによって、 記録へッド 1 に対する負圧がほぼ一定に保たれ、 記録へッド 1へのインク供給が安定する。
インク収容室 2 5の内側には、 その底部に、 光反射部材 2 7が設置されている。 光反. 射部材 2 7は、 互いに平行でない 2つの反射面 2 7 a, 2 7 bを有し、 これら 2つの反 射面 2 7 a , 2 7 bとインクタンク 2 0 (カップ部 2 2 ) の底壁面 2 2 f とによって、 図 4に示すように両端が開放した三角プリズム形状の空間が形成されるように構成した 構造体である。 光反射部材 2 7は、 カップ部 2 2と一体に形成してもよいし、 カップ部 2 2とは別部材で構成してもよい。
反射面 2 7 a, 2 7 bは、 インクタンク 2 0の底壁面 2 2 f を介してィンクタンク 2 0の外からインク収容室 2 5内に入射してきた光を反射して、 再びインクタンク 2 0の 外へ出射させる。 そのために、 インクタンク 2 0の筐体 2 3は、 少なくとも光反射部材 2. 7に対して光を入出射させる領域が、 光を透過する部材で形成される。 ここでいう光 とは、 このインクタンク 2 0が装着されるインクジエツト記録装 の光学ュニット 1 4 (図 1参照) が出射する光である。 光を透過する部材としては、 例えばポリプロピレン が挙げられる。
また、 インクタンク 2 0の底壁面 2 2 f を介して、 光学ユニット 1 4から光反射部材 2 7に光を照射することができるようにするために、 光反射部材 2 7が光学ュニット 1 4の真上に位置したときに光反射部材 2 7と光学ュニット 1 4との間に存在する部林 (例えばキャリッジ 2 (図 1参照) やタンクホルダ 7 (図 2参照),) には、 光を通過さ せるための開口部が形成されている。
本実施形態では、 各反射面 2 7 a, 2 7 bは、 インクタンク 2 0の底壁面 2 2 f に対 して 4 5 ° の角度で傾斜して互いに向き合うように配置されている。 これによつて、 インクタンク 2 0の底壁面 2 2 f に対して垂直に入射した光が、 2つの反射面 2 7 a , 2 7 bで順次反射した後、 インクタンク 2 0の底壁面 2 2 f に対して垂直に出射する光 路をたどる。 つまり、 光反射部材 2 7は、 インクタンク 2 0の底壁面 2 2 f に対して垂 直な方向から入射してきた光を、 反射面 2 7 a, 2 7 bで反射して、 入射してきた光と 平行でかつ逆向きに出射する。 また、 光学ユニット 1 4は、 発光素子 1 5からの出射光 の光軸がインクタンク 2 0の底壁面 2 2 f に対して垂直となるように設置される。 その 理由は後述する。
反射面 2 7 a , 2 7 bは、 光反射部材 2 7 (筐体と一体成形する場合には筐体材料、 別体で構成する場合には好適な材料) そのもので構成してもよいが、 反射面 2 7 a , 2 . 7 bとすべき領域に、 より反射率の高い反射膜を貼り付けたり、 形成したりして構成す ることが好ましい。 反射面 2 7 a, 2 7 bを反射膜で構成する場合、 その反射膜として は、 接着や機械的接合によって貼り付けられた反射フィルム、 反射テープ、 あるいは蒸 着によって形成した金属膜などが挙げられる。 また、 反射面 2 7 a , 2 7 bを光反射部 材 2 7自身で構成する場合、 光反射部材 2 7として、 アルミニウムやクロムなどの金属' 材料で構成し、 反射面 2 7 a, 2 7 bを鏡面仕上げによつて形成すると、 光の反射効率 が向上する。 光反射部材 2 7は、 インク収容室 2 5内のインクと接触する部材であり、 その物性や外観が変化すると後述するィンク残量等の検出性能に大きく影響する場合も あるので、 光反射部材 2 7の特に反射面 2 7 a, 2 7 bは、 インクと接触しても物性や 外観が変化しにくい耐インク性を有する部材で構成することが好ましい。 なお、 筐体と 同じ材料によって光反射部材 2 7を形成した場合でも、 光は反射してくるが反射光量の 低下が著しいことが予想されるので、 検出機構側の出射光量を高めたり、 受光感度を上 げるなどの対応は必要になる。
光反射部材 2 7によって、 インクタンク 2 0の底壁面 2 2 f と反射面 2 7 a , 2 7 b との間に形成される空間は、 両端が開放しており、 インク収容室 2 5と連通している。 したがって、 この空間はインク収容室 2 5との間でインクが自由に流通し、 この空間内 には、 インク収容室 2 5内でのインク液面と同じ高さでインクが存在する。
次に、 上述した光学ユニット 1 4および光反射部材 2 7による、 インクタンク 2 0の 有無の検出、 インクの有無の検出、 およびインクの色の判別について、 図 5 ( a ) 〜 ( c ) を参照して説明する。
( a ) タンク.無し:
インクタンク 2 0が装着されていないときは、 図 5 ( a ) に示すように、 光学ュ-ッ ト 1 4の発光素子 1 5から出射した光はそのまま進行し、 光は受光素子 1 6へは戻らな レ、。 したがって、 光学ユエット 1 4からは何の出力も得られず、 インクジエツト記録装 置の制御部は、 これをタンク無し、 すなわちインクタンク 2 0が装着されていないと判 断する。
' ( b ) タンク有りノインク有り :
インクタンク 2 0が装着されており、 しかもその中にインクが存在している場合、 よ り正確には少なくとも光反射部材 2 7の周囲にインクが存在している場合は、 図 5 ( b ) に示すように、 発光素子 1 5から出射した光は、 インクタンク 2 0の筐体 2 3を 透過して光反射部材 2 7に入射する。 光反射部材 2 7では、 入射した光は、 2つの反射 面 2 7 a, 2 7 bで順次反射して、 入射してきた方向と逆向きに進行し、 再ぴ筐体 2 3 を透過し、 受光素子 1 6へ入射する。 よって、 光学ュニット 1 4力 らは、 受光素子 1 6 に入射した光の強度に応じた出力が得られる。 ここで、 インクタンク 2 0内にインクが 存在していると、 2つの反射面 2 7 a, 2 7 bと筐体 2 3との間の空間にもインクが存 在しているので > 発光素子 1 5から出射した光は、 インクタンク 2 0内ではインク中を 進行する。
( c ) タンク有り/インク無し:
インクタンク 2 0は装着されているが、 その中にインクが存在していない場合、 より 正確にいえば、 光反射部材 2 7の周囲にインクが存在していない場合は、 図 5 ( c ) に 示すように、 発光素子 1 5から出射した光は、 インクが存在している場合と同じ光路を 進行して受光素子 1 6に入射する。 ただしこの場合は、 2つの反射面 2 7 a , 2 7 bと 筐体 2 3との間の空間にはインクが存在していないので、 発光素子 1 5から出射した光 は、 インクタンク 2 0内では空気中を進行する。
上記のように、 インクタンク 2 0が装着されている場合は、 そのインクタンク 2 0内 でのインクの有無にかかわらず、 発光素子 1 5から出射した光は、 光反射部材 2 7で反 射して受光素子 1 6で検出されることになる。 ここで、 インクが存在しない場合に受光 素子 1 6で検出される光の強度を A、 インクが存在している場合に受光素子 1 6で検出 される光の強度を Bとする。 それぞれの場合での、 受光素子 1 6で検出される光の強度 を比較すると、
A > B となる。
これは、 空気中を進行した場合と比べてインク中を進行したほうが、 光の減衰の度合 いが高いためである。 さらに、 インクタンク 2 0が装着されていない場合に受光素子 1 6で検出される光の強度を C (= 0 :隣接した発光素子からの直接光による影響は否定 できないが実質的に 0と考えて差し支えない。) とする。 この場合は、 発光素子 1 5か ら出射した光は受光素子 1 6で検出されないので、 受光素子 1 6で検出される光の強度 は上記の (a ) 〜 (c ) の、 3つの場合の中では最も小さく、 結果的に、 これらの光強 度の間には、
A > B > C
の関係がある。
光学ユニット 1 4からは、 入射した光の強度に応じた出力信号が得られる。 つまり、 図 5 ( a ) 〜'(c ) のそれぞれの場合で、 光学ユニット 1 4からは異なる出力信号が得 られる。 図 5 ( a ) 〜 (c ) のそれぞれの状態と、 光学ユニット 1 4からの出力信号と の関係を予め対応させておけば、 インクタンク 2 0に設けた一つの光反射部材 2 7と、 ィンクジェット記録装置の本体側に設けた一つの光学ュニット 1 4とにより、 インクタ ンク 2 0の有無と、 インクの有無とを検出することができる。 なお、 検出精度を高める ことで、 光の減衰量を検知して、 光反射部材 2 7よりも下のインク量をリニアに検出す ることもできる。 '
光はインクを透過することによって減衰されるが、 インクの種類 (色) によって減衰 される光の波長が異なる。 したがって、 発光素子 1 5力 ら出射した光がインクを透過し たときは、 受光素子 1 6に入射する光の強度は、 透過したインクの色に応じて異なった ものとなる。 よって、 光学ユニット 1 4の出力信号から、 インクの色も判別することが できる。 インクの色の判別精度を向上させるには、 検出の対象としているインクの色に 応じて得られるそれぞれの出力信号の違いができるだけ大きくなるように、 発光素子 1 5から出射する光が含む波長を適宜選択するのが好ましい。 ·
ィンクの色を判別できることによって、 装着されたィンクタンク 2 0が適切な位置に 装着されている力否かを知ることができ、 それにより、 インクタンク 2 0の誤装着を防 止することができる。 また、.インクの色を判別するための構造である光反射部材 2 7は 各色のインクタンク 2 0に共通であるので、 インクタンク 2 0の筐体 2 3をインクの色 ごとに用意する必要はなく各色で共通に用いることができ、 インクタンク 2 0の製造コ ストの低減ィ匕および小型ィ匕に大いに貢献する。 - 従来のプリズムを用いた検出システムでは、 固体中を通過する光路長が長く、 それだ け光も減衰されやすくなる。 それに対して本実施形態においては、 検出用の光は、 イン クタンク 2 0の筐体 2 3の部分を通過する際を除いて、 大部分が気体または液体中を通 過している。 したがって、 光の無駄な減衰が少なく、 発光素子 1 5から出射した光を効 率よく利用することができる。
上述した実施形態では、 光反射部材 2 7は、 図 4に示したように、'直方体状の構造体 の中に、 インク収容室 2 5と連通する三角柱状の空間を形成している。 そのため、 光反 射部材 2 7には厚肉の部分と薄肉の部分が存在する。 光反射部材 2 7を、 樹脂、 その中 でも特に、 熱収縮率の高いポリプロピレンなどで成形した場合、 厚肉部では反射面 2 7 a , 2 7 bにヒケが生じ、 入射した光の反射効率が低下するおそれがある。 そこで、 図 6 ( a )、 ( b ) に示すように、.光反射部材 3 ·7, 3 8の肉厚を、 所望の平坦性を有する 反射面 3 7 a , 3 8 aが得られる程度にほぼ均一にすることが好ましい。 図 6 ( a ) に 示す光反射部材 3 7は、 外側の面も平面で構成した例であり、 図 6 ( b ) に示す光反射 部材 3 8は、 外側の稜線部分を曲面で繋げた例である。 このように、 反射面 3 7 a , 3 8 aが所望の形状に形成されていれば、 光反射部材 3 7, 3 8の外形は任意である。 図 3を参照すると、 本実施形態では光反射部材 2 7を設置する位置として、 インク収 容室 2 5とした場合を例に挙げて説明したが、 負圧発生部材収納室 2 4内であっても構 わなレ、。 この場合、 負圧発生部材 2 6は光反射部材 2 7を覆つて負圧発生部材収納室 2 4内に挿入されるので、 光反射部材 2 7の内側の空間内には負圧発生部材 2 6は殆ど存 在せず、 インクだけが存在することになる。 そのため、 光反射部材 2 7を負圧発生部材 収納室 2 4·に設置しても、 上述したタンク有無、 インク残量の検出おょぴインク色の判 別に負圧発生部材 2 6が悪影響を及ぼすことは殆どない。 したがって、 インク室として インク収容室のみを有するインクタンクや、 負圧発生部材収納室のみを有するインクタ ンクのいずれにも、 光反射部材 2 7を適用することができる。 ただし、 負圧発生部材内 に光反射部材 2 7によってインクの存在する空間を構成した場合には、 インクの消費に よって、 負圧派生部材中の気液界面が空間に到達したところで、 空間内にあるインクが 負圧発生部材に吸収されてしまうため、 本構成を採用する場合には、 配置個所や空間の 容積などを工夫する必要がある。
また、 上述した実施形態では、 光反射部材 2 7は、 プリズム形状の空間内での反射を 2回繰り返して、 インクタンク 2 0の外から入射した光を再ぴインクタンク 2 0の外へ 出射しているが、 図 7に示すような、 単純な板状の光反射部材 4 7とした構成も考えら れる。
図 7に示す光反射部材 4 7は、 インクタンク 4 0のインク室内に、 インクタンク 4 0 の筐体 4 3の壁面と間隔をあけて、 筐体 4 3の壁面と平行となるように対向配置された 平板状の部材であり、 その壁面との対向面が反射面 4 7 aとなっている。 光反射部材 4 7が対向する慮体 4 3の壁面は、 底壁面でもよいし、 側壁面でもよい。 光反射部材 4 7 の反射面 4 7 aと筐体 4 3との間の空間には、 この光反射部材 4 7が配されているイン ク室との間でインクが自由に流通する。
光学ユニット 1 4の発光素子 1 5から出射した光は、 インクタンク 4 0の筐体 4 3を 透過してインク室内へ進み、 光反射部材 4 7の反射面 4 7 aで反射する。 反射した光は、 再ぴ筐体 4 3を透過して受光素子 1 6に入射する。 このとき、 前述したのと同様に、 受 光素子 1 6で検出される光の強度から、 インクタンク 4 0内のインクの有無おょぴイン クの色を判別することができる。 また、 反射面 4 7 aでの反射光が検出される力否かに より、 インクタンク 4 0の有無も検出することができる。
従来のィングジェット記録装置では、 インクタンクの内部に設けられた光学反射部材 はインクタンク内のインク残量の検出のみに用いられ、 インクタンクの有無については インクタンクとインクジエツト記録装置との電気的接続を利用して検出していた。 それ に対して本発明では、 インクジェット記録装置は、 受光素子 1 6で検出される光の有無、 およぴ強度から、 インクタンク 4 0内のインク残量だけでなくインクタンク 4 0の有無 も検出でき、 その結果、 インクタンク 4 0およびインクジェット記録装置の構成を簡略 化することができる。
このように、 板状の光反射部材 4 7に対して光学ュニット 1 4から光を入射させる場 合、 光学ュニット 1 4の小型化、 さらにはインクジエツト記録装置の小型化のためには、 光学ュニット 1 4からの光の、 反射面 4 7 aへの入射角は小さい方が好ましい。 入射角 が小さいと、 光反射部材 4 7が透明な 材で構成され、 しかも光反射部材 4 7そのもの で反射面 4 7 aを構成していると、 光が反射せず透過してしまう。 そこで、 そのような 場合は前述した通り光反射部材 4 7を金属で構成したり、 光反射面 4 7 aに反射膜を設 けるなどの加工を行つたりすることが好ましレ、。
なお、 図 7に示す例では、 発光素子 1 5から筐体 4 3の壁面に対して斜め方向に出射 した光が利用されるが、 このことに対しては、 発光素子 1 5の光軸の向きを調整したり、 あるいは、 光の強度は若干低下するが、 発光素子 1 5から出射する際に集光しきれてい ない光成分を利用したりすることで対処することができる。 また、 図 7では光反射部材 ' 4 7を筐体 4 3の壁面と平行に配した例を示したが、 発光素子 1 5から出射した光を反 射して受光素子 1 6に戻すことができれば必ずしも平行でなくともよい。
ここで、 図 5に示した構成と図 7に示した構成との、 検出感度を比較する。
図 7に示すように、 発光素子 1 5およぴ受光素子 1 6から、 発光素子 1 5からの光の 反射面 4 7 aでの反射位置までの、 筐体 4 3の壁面に垂直な方向での距離を L l、 筐体 4 3の壁面と平行な方向での、 発光素子 1 5および受光素子 1 6の中心間距離を L2 と する。 また、 図 8に示すように、 図 5に示したプリズム型の光反射部材 2 7についても、 図 7と同様に、 各距離 L l, L2を定義する。 .
まず、 プリズム型の光反射部材 2 7における、 発光素子 1 5から出射した光が受光素 子 1 6に入射するまでの光路長 La を求める。 2つの反射面 2 7 a , 2 7 bは前述した とおりの配置であり、 発光素子 1 5から反射面 2 7 aまでの光の進行方向および反射面 2 7 bで反射した光の進行方向は、 筐体 2 3の壁面に垂直であり、 かつ、 反射面 2 7 a で反射した光の進行方向は、 筐体 2 3の壁面と平行となるので、
光路長 La= 2 L l+ L2 -" ( 1 )
で表される。
一方、 図 7に示した平板型の光反射部材 4 7における、 発光素子 1 5から受光素子 1 6までの光路長 Lbは、

式 (1 )、 ( 2 ) より、 La> Lb であることが分かる。 よって、 ランパート 'ベール の法則より、 より長い光路長となるプリズム型の構成のほうが、 発光素子 1 5から出射 した光と受光素子 1 6に入射する光との強度差が大きくなるため、 より確実なインク有 無検出およびィンク色判別が可能となる。
. 本発明が逾用されるインクタンクは、 インクジェット記録装置に対して着脱されるも のであり、 光学ユニットは、 インクジェット記録装置に設置されているものである。 そ のため、 各部品の寸法公差や組み立て公差に起因する、 光学^ニットと光反射部材との 距離の製品ごとのばらつきは避けられない。 そこで、 この距離が変化した場合の光路の 変化について、 図 9を参照して説明する。
まず、 図 9 ( a ) に示す、 プリズム型の光反射部材 2 7では、 光学ユニット 1 4から インクタンク 2 0の筐体 2 3の壁面に垂直に入射した光を、 再ぴ筐体 2 3の壁面に垂直 に出射しているので、 筐体 2 3の壁面に垂直な方向での光学ュニット 1 4と光反射部材 2 7の距離が Xだけ離れた場合であっても、 発光素子 1 5から入射して反射面 2 7 a , 2 7 bで反射した光は、 受光素子 1 6に入射する。 光学ュ-ッド 1 4と光反射部材 2 7 との距離が接近した場合も同様である。
—方、 図.9 ( b ) に示す、 平板型の光反射部材 4 7では、 筐体 4 3の壁面に対して斜 めに入射した光を利用するので、 光学ュニット 1 4と光反射部材 4 7との距離が Xだけ 離れると、 反射面 4 7 aで反射した光は受光素子 1 6へ入射しなくなる。 光学ュニット 1 4と光反射部材 4 7との距離が接近した場合も同様である。 これに対しては、 発光素 子 15の照射角度を調整したり、 距離 Xが変化すると反射面 47 aへの入射位置も変わ ることを利用して光の入射位置によって出射方向が変化するように反射面 47 aの形状 を工夫したり、 部品寸法公差や組み立て公差をより精度よく管理したりすることで対処 できる。 ただし、 プリズム型の光反射部材 27と比較した場合、 こういった調整等が不 要なプリズム型の光反射部材 27のほうが好ましい。
図 10に、 プリズム型の光反射部材の/ f也の例を示す。 図 10に示す光反射部材 57は、 インクタンク 50の筐体 53の内壁面との間にプリズム形状の空間を形成して筐体 53 の内壁面に設置された構造体であり、 3つの反射面 57 a, 57 b, 57 cを有してい る。 筐体 53の壁面と光反射部材 57の反射面 57 a, 57 b, 57 cどの間に形成さ れる空間は断面が台形状であり、 光反射部材 57が設けられているインク室内のインク がこの空間とインク室との間を自由に流動できるように、 この空間はインク室と ¾通し ている。 各反射面 57 a, 57 b, 57 cは、 筐体 53の壁面に垂直に入射してきた光 1 各反射面 57 a, 57 b, 57 cで順次反射され、 再ぴ筐体 53の外へ、 筐体 53 の壁面に垂直な方向に出射させるように、 筐体 53の内壁面に対する角度が設定されて いる。 光反射部材 47を設ける筐体 53の壁面は、 底壁面であってもよいし側壁面であ つてもよい。
このように、 3つの反射面 57 a, 57 b, 7 cを有する場合であっても、 前述した A>B>Cの関係は変わらず、 受光素子 16で検出される光の強度から、 インクタンク 50の有無おょぴインクの有無を検出できるとともに、 さらにインクの色の判別も可能 となる。
インクの色の判別に関して、 前述した例では、 発光素子 15から出射する光の波長を、 判別する対象となるインクを透過したときに減衰しやすい (吸収されやすい) 波長とし た例を挙げた。 ただし、 この場合は、 各色のインクに対して減衰の度合いに差のある適 切な波長の光を見つけ出す必要がある。 そこで、 発光素子 1 5を、 各インク色における 吸光度がピークとなる領域の波長の光を各ィンクタンクごとに照射できるように、 出射 する光の波長が可変なものとすることで、 受光素子 1 6に入射する光の強度差がインク の色ごとでより差が大きくなり、 ィンク色の判別を容易に行うことができる。
[産業上の利用可能性] '
以上のように、 本発明によれば、 インクタンクに設けた光反射部材に対して光を照射 し、 その光の反射光を検出することによって、 インクタンクの有無、 インクタンク中の インクの有無を検出することができ、 さらにはインクの色も判別することができる。 こ のことはインクタンクの構造を各色共通とした場合でも可能であるので、 特に、 それぞ れ収容しているィンクの色の異なる複数のィンクタンクを装着するィンクジェット記録 装置に本発明を適用することによって、 上記の構成だけで、 インクタンクの誤装着も検 出することができる。

Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . インクを用いて被記録媒体上に記録を行なう記録へッドに対して供給されるイン クを貯留するインクタンクを着脱自在に保持するための保持部と、 前記保持部に保持さ れた前記ィンクタンクに向けて重力方向下方から上方に向けて光を出射する発光素子と、 前記発光素子から出射する光の波長領域に受光感度を有する受光素子と、 を備えた記録 装置に対して装着されるインクタンクにおいて、
前記ィンクタンクを構成する筐体と、
前記ィンクを前記記録へッドに対して供給する供給部と、
前記ィンクタンクと外部と連通する大気連通部と、
前記筐体で構成されるインク貯留空間としてのィンク室内に配され、 前記発光素子に よって出射された光を前記受光素子に反射する光反射部材と、
前記記録装置の保持部に対する前記ィンクタンクの装着状態で底となる個所であって、 少なくとも前記光の入出経路部分となる個所が光透過性である筐体と、
'を備え、
前記筐体の光透過性の部分と前記光反射部材との間は、 前記ィンクが存在する空間で あることを特徴とするインクタンク。
2 . 前記光反射部材は、 前記発光素子からの光を 1回の反射で前記受光素子に返す平 板で構成されることを特徴とする請求項 1に記載のィンクタンク。
3 . 前記光反射部材は、 前記発行素子からの光を複数回の反射で前記受光素子に返す ように構成された多面体であることを特徴とする請求項 1に記載のィンクタンク。
. 前記光反射部材は、 前記ィンク室に入射した光を順次反射する 2つの反射面を有 し、 該 2つの反射面と前記筐体の内壁面との間にプリズム形状の前記空間が形成される ように前記筐体に一体的に設けられた構造体である請求項 3に記載のィンクタンク。
5 . 前記複数の反射面の角度が、 前記筐体を構成する壁面に垂直に前記インク室の中 に入射した光を前記壁面に垂直に前記インク室の外へ出射するように設定されている請 求項 3乃至請求項 4のいずれかに記載のィンクタンク。
6 . 前記インク室内には、 インクが収容されていることを特 [とする請求項 1乃至請 求項 5のいずれかに記载のィンクタンク。
7 . 記録へッドからィンクを被記録媒体上に吐出して記録を行なうインクジェット記 録装置において、 - 記録へッドに対して供給されるインクを貯留するインクタンクであって、 前記インク タンクのインク貯留空間を構成するインク室内に配され、 前記発光素子によって出射さ れた光を前記受光素子に反射する光反射部材と、 前記インクタンクの使用状態で底とな る個所が光透過性である筐体と、 を備えており、 前記筐体の光透過性の部分と前記光反 射部材との間は、 前記インクが存在する空間として構成されたインクタンクを着脱自在 に保持するための保持部と、
前記保持部に保持された前記ィンクタンクに向けて重力方向下方から上方に向けて光 を出射する発光素子と、
前記発光素子から出射する光の波長領域に受光感度を有する受光素子と、
を備え、 前記発光素子は、 出射する光の波長が可変であることを特徴とするインクジェ ット記録装置。
