Abstract

The invention relates to a razor (1) made of an elongate body (2) having at least one blade (4) pivotally secured to one end (6) thereof. The pivotal axis of the at least one blade is transverse to the axis of the body. Also connected to the blade is drive means (20) which extends within the body and is connectable to a prime mover providing oscillatory motion at the other end. More particularly, the body is releasably securable to a housing (15) containing a prime mover. The body will be disposable and/or the blade will be disposable and releasably securable to the body. In the case of the latter, the blade is provided on a disposable cartridge. The housing will be preferably be that of an electric toothbrush.

Description

A RAZOR
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a razor for wet shaving.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Razors are well-known and have many different configurations. Most razors intended for wet shaving have a disposable cartridge which includes a blade or set of blades. Some razors make use of such cartridges and a motor to impart oscillatory motion to the cartridge. Such motion is linear and transverse to the length of the blades. These razors have, however, not found widespread acceptance. This is possibly due to inefficiency and the expense associated with such razors.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide a razor which will at least partially alleviate some of the abovementioned problems. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with the invention there is provided a razor comprising a body having at least one blade pivotally secured thereto and to drive means connectable to a prime mover.
Further features of the invention provide for the body to be elongate with the at least one blade secured to one end thereof; for the pivotal axis of the at least one blade to be transverse to the axis of the body; and for body to be releasably securable to a housing containing a prime mover.
Further features of the invention provide for the body to be disposable; and/or for the blade to be disposable and releasably securable to the body. The blade will preferably be provided on a disposable cartridge.
Still further features of the invention provide for the drive means to be connectable to a prime mover providing oscillatory motion; and for the drive means to extend from the at least one blade within the body.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided for the housing to be that of an electric toothbrush.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
One embodiment of the invention will be described, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a razor; Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation of the razor in Figure 1 ; and Figure 3 is a front view of the razor illustrating its action in use. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A razor (1) is shown in Figures 1 and 2 and includes an elongate body (2) made of a plastics material with at least one blade (4) pivotally secured to one end (6) thereof. More particularly, a set of blades (4) are provided on a cartridge (8) releasably secured to a mounting (3) which extends from a base (5). The base (5) pivots relative to the body (2) under action of a pin (7) which extends centrally therefrom into the body (2) and transverse to axis of the body (2).
The mounting (3) can conveniently be provided with formations which releasably engage a disposable cartridge (8) with cooperating formations. Such engagement is widely used in the industry and can take any of a number of forms.
The opposite end (8) of the body (2) has a central aperture (9) therein and is shaped to be securable to a spigot (12) of complementary shape on a housing (15) containing a prime mover (not shown), in this embodiment an electric motor.
A drive means (20) is located within the body (2) and is secured at one end (21) to the pin (7) with the opposite end (22) shaped to receive a drive shaft (25) extending from the spigot (12) on the housing (15) and connected to the electric motor.
The drive shaft (25) is configured to oscillate rapidly in use. This type of arrangement is well-known and widely used in electric toothbrushes and will not be described in any further detail. Similarly, the configuration of the drive means (20) in relation to the pin (7) is well-known from electric toothbrushes and will not be described in further detail. Different arrangements of the drive shaft and for the transfer of its oscillations to impart pivoting of a blade (4) on such a razor (1) will be appreciated by a suitably skilled person.
In use, with the body (2) secured to the housing (15) and the electric motor operating, the blades (4) pivot rapidly relative to the body (2), as shown in Figure 3. When applied to the skin (not shown) during shaving the rapid movement of the blades (4) ensures that they travel over the same area of skin a number of times during a single shaving stroke. This in turn ensures an effective and comfortable shave without having to draw the blades (4) over the same area of skin a number of times.
The range of movement of the blades (4) illustrated in Figure 3 is only by way of example. The drive arrangement can be varied to adjust the range of movement imparted to the pivoting blade (4). It is envisaged that the razor (1) will be used with a prime mover of which allow adjustment of the oscillation speed.
It is also envisaged that the body will be shaped to fit the housing of an electric toothbrush. This not only enhances the usefulness of such housing but also reduces the costs of using the razor (1) as it is not necessary to purchase a separate prime mover therefor.
It will be appreciated that many other embodiments of a razor exist which fall within the scope of the invention particularly as regards the shape and configuration thereof. For example, any suitable number of blades can be pivotally secured to the body and the body and drive means can be shaped to fit any suitable housing and prime mover.
