United States Patent 3,363,317 POWER DRIVEN RAZOR HAIR CUTTING AND SHAPING APPARATUS Norman Cassella, 477 Riverside Ave., Rutherford, NJ. 07070 Filed Dec. 20, 1966, Ser. No. 603,243 6 Claims. (Cl. 30272) My invention relates to a power driven razor hair cutting device or power driven shaper utilizing a razor type blade assembly providing a slicing action.
The increasing popularity of mens hair styling has created a whole new field of specialized techniques in the cutting of mens hair. Razor cutting is one of these techniques.
At the present time the technique used is to razor cut the hair manually, using a conventional barbers straight razor. The most successful method is to use a slicing stroke with the razor while holding the hair with a comb.
Most hair stylists have some form of electric motor driven units to drive a variety of clipper blades. It would therefore be most desirable to provide a mechanism readily attachable to and fit this type of drive unit. Such units drive the cutting mechanism from side to side cutting the hair between a plurality of cooperating teeth.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a frame, one end of which is formed to be removably attached to a conventional electric power driven clipper drive unit. The frame has ways or slots for slidably receiving the support ing extensions of the carriage which in turn receives a replaceable razor blade assembly. The carriage is connected by means of a connecting link to an oscillating bell crank mounted on the frame and operatively linked with the driving unit when the cutting mechanism is attached to the drive unit. A comb member is detachably secured to one side of the frame and is designed so that the blade rides tightly against the comb. A cover is detachably secured to the other side of the frame. The blade may be quickly replaced by removing the comb. In a modification I dispense with the carriage and drive the blade assembly directly from the bell crank and link. The driving unit could be made an integral part of the whole assembly.

Referring to FIGURES 1 to 5 and FIGURE 9, a hair 3,363,317 Patented Jan. 16, 1958 "ice cutting apparatus made according to my invention includes a frame 20, having a portion 21 formed to be attached at a proper angle to a conventional power operated clipper driving mechanism, the member 22 providing the engaging structure. The frame 20 is provided with the grooved ways 23 and 24.
A reciprocating carriage Z5 is provided with extensions or arms 25 and 27 slidably received within the ways 23 and 24 for supporting the carriage 25 in the frame 20. The carriage is also provided with an arm or extension 28 which is connected by a link 29 pivotally connected to extension 28 and the bell crank 30 pivotally mounted at 30' on frame 20. The bell crank 30 is provided with ears or extensions 31 and 32 which are engaged by the vibrating arm or armature (not shown) on the drive unit when the apparatus or mechanism is mounted on the drive unit. In operation the carriage reciprocates longitudinally of the frame.
The carriage is provided with a recess 33 (FIGURES 8 and 10) which snugly receives and retains the conventional disposable blade 34 having the head 35 which fits into recess 33.
When attached to the electrically driven power unit, the bell crank 30 is oscillated about its pivot 30. This action is transmitted through link 29 to carriage 25 to cause a rapid reciprocating action of the carriage 25 and blade 34 to cause a slicing action.
Removably secured to frame 20 is the comb 36, having a recess 37 for receiving the head 35 of the blade. The relationship of the blade and comb is such that there is a very tight sliding contact between the blade and comb. I have found that this is necessary to prevent hair from accumulating between the blade and comb which accumulation I have found to interfere with proper cutting. The length of the teeth of the comb also must not be too long since long teeth permit only small amounts of hair to be cut. The blade 25 can be easily replaced by removing the comb 36.
A cover 38 is secured to the other side of the frame holding the carriage in place on the frame.
In a modification of my invention shown in FIGURES 11 to 17, inclusive, I am able to dispense with the carriage and the cover and still use a conventional razor blade.
The frame 40 is provided with the slots or ways 41 and 42 which slidably receive the head or backing 43 of the blade 44. The blade is provided with a link hole or aperture 45, into which is pivotally fitted one end of the link 46, the other end of the link 46, being pivotally received in the bell crank 47 having arms 48, 49 which engage the operating vibrating tongue of the driving unit.
A comb 50 is detachably secured to frame 40.
In this modification the blade 44 is reciprocated in the same manner as described for the embodiment shown in FIGURES l to 10, inclusive.
