Abstract

A heat pump that uses the air as its heat source comprising a closed heat pump circuit having a working fluid circulating therein, the circuit having an evaporator (9) coil heat exchanger, a compressor (11), a condenser (19, 20) heat exchanger, an expansion valve (17) and control means (27). The control means (27) being adapted to control the heat imparted to the heat transfer fluid in the condenser heat exchanger (20) as a function of the ambient air temperature. Further, the heat pump includes a fan (10) for drawing ambient air over the evaporator coil, wherein the control means incorporates ambient air temperature sensing means (23) and varies the fan (10) speed as a function of this temperature. The control means also incorporates evaporator (9) coil temperature sensing means (25) and is adapted to initiate a defrost cycle when the evaporator coil (9) reaches a preset start-defrost temperature.
