Abstract

Disclosed herein is a crash protection air bag comprising of, an inflatable air bag packed compactly and provided with contoured shoulder strap with racked waist belt for wearing to the back of the person. A combustion chamber containing sodium azide (NaN3) and potassium nitrate (KNO2), an electrical trigger for igniting the gases in the combustion chamber and optionally, a fastener to attach back packs normally carried by the mountain climbers.

Description

CRASH PROTECTION AIR BAG
This invention relates to a crash protections air bag.
Technical iϊeld:- The crash protection air bag of the present invention protects mountain climbers, construction workers, fire fighters, rescue workers from crashing on the ground in the event of an accidental fall from any height.
Prior Art: Mountain Climbers, Construction Workers, Fire Fighters, rescue personnel etc., are under the risk of accidentally falling while performing their tasks. At present there is no means to protect them from crashing on the ground in case of accident and such falls have always been very fatal. The helmets and crash pads used by the personnel while performing their tasks are not effective for falls beyond certain height.
Object of the present invention:
It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a crash protection air bag, which inflates within microseconds in case of emergency.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a crash protection with an aid of an air bag, which is easy to operate and cost effective.
Summary of the invention:
This invention thus provides a crash protection air bag comprising of: (a) An inflatable air bag packed compactly and provided with contoured shoulder strap with racked waist belt for wearing to the back of the person; (b) A combustion chamber containing sodium azide (NaN3) and potassium nitrate (KNO2); (c) An electrical trigger for igniting the gases in the combustion chamber; (d) A fastener to attach back packs normally carried by the mountain climbers. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS:
Fig. 1 illustrates the crash protection air bag of the present invention; and
Figs. 2 to 5 illustrate the sequence of operation of the air bag of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS CRASH PROTECTION AIR BAG:
A crash protection air bag has been developed by the inventor, which can be worn to the back of the climber in compactly packed condition and made to inflate to 6' x 2' x 1 ' size within microseconds to protect the climber from crashing on the ground by providing cushioning effect in case of an accident. The air is provided with a contoured shoulder strap 1 with racked waist belt 2 for wearing to the back of the person.
The mountain climber's crash protection Air Bag system has basically three parts. a) The air bag 1 measuring 6' x 2' x 1' made up of ballistic nylon fabric kept in folded / packed form which can be worn to back of the mountain climbers as a back pack Fig-A. b) The inflation system: Basically a combustion chamber embedded in the bag which generates nitrogen gas rapidly to inflate the air bag described above by the ignition of sodium azide (NaN3) and Potassium Nitride (KNO2) as in the case of solid socket propellant. c) The trigger - a Rip Cord connected to an electrical switch which when pulled closes a battery power electrical contact to ignite the propellant kept in the ignition chamber.
The Climber wears the air bag as shown in Fig. 1 to his back while climbing or performing his task at a height. In case of an accident, the victim immediately pulls the Rip Cord, which is placed near to the chest of the climber. An electrical switch connected to the cord closes an electrical contact to the inflating system, which ignites the solid propellant within a micro second which in turn generates Nitrogen gas rapidly to inflate the air bag. The air bag in the folded / packed condition burst opens to its full size as shown in (fig-3) there by protecting the entire body of the climber from crashing on the ground by providing cushioning effect. The sequence of operation of the Air Bag is depicted in Figures 2 to 5.
The system is light in weight, can be worn to the back of the climber firmly and conveniently. The system is failsafe and inflates instantaneously to protect the entire body of the climber by providing cushioning effect in case of accident fall.
The air bag has provision to attach the back packs normally carried by the mountain climbers if required. In case the mountain climber carries the back pack along with the air bag, provision is made to automatically detach the bag & throw the back pack apart when the air bag is inflated.
