Definitions
- the present invention relates to a human propelled vehicle and to a drive mechanism therefor.
- Vehicles propellable by human exertion are well known, particularly for recreational transport uses. Scooters are one example. These vehicles are operated by standing on a platform with handle bars extending therefrom and using a foot to push off the ground and move forward on freely rotating wheels. Chain drive sprocket mechanisms, such as commonly found on pedal bicycles, are not used.
- Scooters are also known that employ a motor acting directly or through a gear mechanism on the back wheel to enable forward movement. Such devices require some form of fuel and maintenance.
- the vehicle includes a platform adapted for pivotal (e.g. rocking) movement, front and rear wheels and a drive mechanism associated with a wheel such that a pivoting motion of the platform will impart forward movement to the vehicle.
- the drive mechanism includes an arcuate toothed member extending from the platform and in communication with a cogwheel/sprocket mounted coaxially with a wheel.
- the arcuate member is mounted for pivoting movement at an end adjacent the platform.
- a resilient means is associated with a second end of the arcuate member.
- the cogwheel is mounted to be freewheeling in one direction.
- a drive mechanism for use with a vehicle wherein said drive mechanism includes a first toothed member and a second toothed member interlinked with the first member such that movement of the first member from a first position to a second position causes movement of the second toothed member wherein the second toothed member is mounted for unresisted freewheeling movement in an opposite direction as a resilient means causes the first toothed member to return from the second position to the first position.
- Figure 1 is a general sketch view of a first human propelled vehicle embodying the present invention, in a first stage of operation;
- Figure 2 is a general sketch view of the vehicle shown in Figure 1 in a second stage of operation;
- Figure 3 is a schematic side elevation of a second human propelled vehicle embodying the present invention.
- a first human propelled vehicle 10 as illustrated by Figures 1 and 2, comprises a platform 11, handlebars 12, a front wheel 13, two rear wheels 14 (one of which is substantially concealed in this view; other embodiments, not shown, have only one rear wheel 14) and a drive mechanism on the rear wheels 14, generally denoted 15.
- the platform 11 is somewhat similar to a skateboard deck and, with the handlebars 12, the vehicle 10 looks somewhat like a scooter.
- First and second chassis wishbone members 16 and 17 join at a pivot point in the form of a shaft 18 fixed to the underside of the platform 11.
- Shaft 18 is at a mid-point of and perpendicular to the general longitudinal axis of platform 11.
- platform 11 is intended to be in ghost outline in the Figures to show detail of the wishbones 16, 17 and the drive mechanism 15.
- a user (rider) of the scooter-like vehicle stands on the platform 11 with one foot either side of the pivot shaft 18. Accordingly stirrups may be provided for foot placement.
- downward pressure P on a rear end of the platform 11 causes a toothed arcuate member 19 to contact and drive a cogwheel 20 mounted coaxially with the wheels 14.
- the toothed member 19 is mounted on a pivoting arm 21 extending from an underside of the platform 11 (towards its rear distal end) and swings generally towards the front end of the vehicle 10.
- the swinging motion of arm 21 is regulated by a spring-loaded extension 22 (somewhat like a shock absorber) mounted thereto via a pivot mount 23.
- a spring-loaded extension 22 (somewhat like a shock absorber) mounted thereto via a pivot mount 23.
- the spring-loaded nature of the extension 22 also helps to keep the toothed member 19 in contact with the cogwheel 20 at all times.
- An additional spring (not shown; extends around the handle bar 12 from front wheel forks 24 to the underside of platform 11) may provide a spring loading action to a front portion of platform 11 to bias it upwardly against the user's weight when that is shifted to the front foot.
- propulsion system may include a gear mechanism located in a hub of the rear wheels 14 (again, known from bicycle technologies) and operated from the handle bars 12, e.g. by twisting a handle grip 12a. As speed builds, these gears may be engaged to enable the ratio of "see-saw” actions to revolutions of a wheel in a given time to increase. Conventional brakes can also be employed.
- a human propelled vehicle that uses a drive mechanism embodying the present invention can have a variety of different forms.
- the vehicle can have two, three or four wheels.
- the handlebars are not mandatory in that the drive could be incorporated with a four-wheel skateboard that uses tilting of its platform to effect turning.
- the pivot shaft 18 is generally in a mid-region of the platform 11, although it could be disposed adjacent the front end as long as the spring of the extension 22 is sufficient to return the vehicle to its initial state, analogous to Figure 1. In such an embodiment, it would be necessary to "jump" up and down towards a rear of the platform 11 as opposed to a "seesaw” action.
- the vehicle can be easily disassembled for storage or convenient space saving.
- a second human propelled vehicle 30 shown schematically in Figure 3, the angled wishbone chassis members 16, 17 of the first vehicle 10 are replaced by a generally horizontal extending chassis comprising a first longitudinally extending strut 31 extending rearwardly from adjacent the front wheel 13 and handlebars 12 to adjacent a midpoint of the chassis. At this midpoint, the strut 31 bifurcates into two parallelly-extending longitudinal chassis side plates 32 which are linked adjacent their rearmost ends by an axle connecting the rear wheels 14.
- a short upstanding abutment 33 extends upwardly from the chassis adjacent the juncture of the strut 31 and the chassis side plates 32, and is provided adjacent its upper end with a transversely extending pivot shaft 18, to which a platform 34 is pivotably mounted.
- the platform 34 corresponds to the platform 11 of the first vehicle 10, except that it comprises a forward portion 35 and a rearward portion 36 meeting adjacent the pivot shaft 18 to form a very shallow 'V shape, aiding the user's "see-sawing" motion atop the platform 34.
- a drive mechanism 15 to drive the rear wheels 14, comprising a toothed arcuate member 19, is connected to the platform 34 adjacent to its rear end.
- the details of the drive mechanism 15, which operates substantially as described for the drive mechanism 15 of the first vehicle 10, above, are mainly concealed between the rear wheels 14 and the chassis side plates 32.
- the arcuate member 19 is mounted to move generally along a longitudinal midline of the chassis of the second vehicle 30, between the chassis side
- the second vehicle 30 may also be provided with a gearing arrangement and with brakes (not shown), preferably operated by a conventional bicycle-style brake handle on the handlebars 12, linked to a Bowden cable arrangement extending to lever-action brakes acting on the rear wheels 14.
- the present invention provides an alternative propulsion means for small vehicles, like scooters or skateboards, propelled by human exertion.
