Definitions
- Radiators are some types of heating bodies used in heating systems. Said bodies are made up of a set of elements made of cast iron, steel, or aluminium alloys, which are appropriately assembled together. Radiators are normally constituted by a top header and a bottom header, connected by a set of tubular columns inside which the heating fluid flows, generally hot water coming from a heat generator, such as a an appropriate boiler.
- the heating elements made of steel forming the headers and the tubular columns are obtained from a strip of rolled steel and formed on appropriate production lines. The most delicate operation of the entire process consists in the assembly of the various elements, in so far as the corresponding welds must guarantee a mechanical resistance to tensile, torsional and shear stresses in addition to fluid tightness.
- the advantage of this process is that it enables pieces having a shiny appearance to be obtained, in so far as the inert atmosphere of the furnace contains a small amount of hydrogen, which, at a high temperature (1300°C), has a deoxidizing capacity.
- the process presents, however, the following negative aspects: - investment costs are high; - there is an excessive waste of energy in so far as, to be able to perform welding, it is necessary to heat the entire mass of the piece to 1300°C when the surfaces involved in the welding process constitute just a minor proportion thereof, with consequent high operating and maintenance costs; - the pieces obtained, mainly the ones having a length of more than one metre, can present deformations so that they subsequently have to be re-adjusted and corrected manually; and - goodness of the weld, understood as fluid tightness, is not always achieved, even though repairs are easy to make.
- the laser-welding process envisages the use of a laser source connected to an anthropomorphic robot or else to a three-axis driving
- the joining points must be free from oxidation, i.e., clean. Use of an antioxidant (in the form of powder, paste, or liquid) is necessary.
- This process can be performed manually or by means of specifically dedicated automatic machines.
- the system which uses automatic machines presents the following positive aspects: - investment costs are limited; - operating costs are limited, in so far as the heating produced is
- the elements can indifferently be made up of tubes and/or sectional elements having different shapes, diameters and thicknesses.
- the above process further enables simultaneous welding in very reduced times of any number whatsoever of tubes on the header; the elements can be either straight or curved.
- the invention solves the problem of creating a process for obtaining heating elements for radiators by means of which, in addition to what has been set forth above, the following additional results are obtained: - welds without any burrs; - perfect automatic matching of the profiles; - non-deformability of the elements during the process; - good mechanical strength of the welds; and

- FIG. 1 is a sectional view according to a longitudinal plane of a
- FIG. 3 is a schematic representation in a cross-sectional view of the equipment for automatic positioning of the headers and of the tubular columns to be welded and for the subsequent welding operation;
- - Figure 4 is a sectional view of a variant according to the invention, representing the detail of assembly between the header and the tubular column with the ring of welding alloy positioned on the outside;
- - Figure 5 is a sectional view of a further variant again according to the invention, representing the detail of assembly between the header and the tubular column, which has a tapered end in order to favour both fitting and positioning of the ring of welding alloy.
- the elements of the radiator are made of steel and can be made up indifferently of tubes and/or sectional elements having different shapes, diameters and thicknesses in order to be able to meet the various requirements of the market.
- Said elements are formed by headers 2 and corresponding tubular columns 3.
- the headers 2 are provided with central holes 4, the diameter of which is less than that of the tubular columns 3 in order to favour their positioning.
- Pre-inserted inside the ends 5 of the tubular columns 3 is an helical ring 6 of welding alloy, which is obtained from a wire wound on a reel and spread with an appropriate antioxidizing paste.
- tubular columns 3 is performed by means of appropriate equipment 7 (Figure 3), which is schematically made up of: - a supporting structure 8;
- a variant according to the invention envisages that the ring 17 of welding material will be set on the outside of the end 5 of the tubular column 3 by resting it on the header.
- a further variant, once again according to the invention, envisages the tubular columns 3 with the ends 18 having a smaller diameter in order to favour their insertion into the central hole 4 of the header 2, together with positioning of the ring of welding alloy 17 on the outside between the header itself and the area 19 of variation of the section of the tubular column 3.
- the elements 2 and 3 thus assembled in an automatic way are subjected to the induction-welding process by means of the appropriate external induction coils 13 and/or internal induction coils 14.
- the process described above basically has the purpose of providing heating elements for radiators, indifferently made up of tubes and/or sectional elements having different shapes, diameters and thicknesses, using the induction-welding system, said process being characterized in that it enables simultaneous welding in very reduced times of any number whatsoever of elements, which are assembled automatically by appropriate equipment after prior insertion, inside the ends of the tubular columns, of a helical ring of welding alloy.
- the process is not limited to the arrangements described and illustrated herein, but also comprises any other similar and equivalent solution designed to achieve the purposes set forth herein.
