Definitions
- the present invention relates to a fan unit for a motor vehicle, and in particular a unit consisting of a housing with air channels through which the air is passed through an opening in the dashboard into the interior of the vehicle.
- Conventional fan units or air conditioners of the present type are configured so that they mix cold or tempered air from the outside with heated air that is generated in a heating heat exchanger.
- the speed of the cold air flow is generally higher than that of the hot air, which is partly due to the fact that the hot air has passed through a heating heat exchanger. This consequently has the consequence that the higher speed of the cold air leads to the formation of layers in the total air flow when the cold air flaps are open for regulating the cold air flow.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a fan unit in which the difference between the air temperatures via the outlet openings of the dashboard is minimized.
- the temperature gradient across the outlet opening of the dashboard is, for example, no more than about 5 ° F.
- a fan unit for a motor vehicle consisting of a housing with air channels through which the air is passed through openings in the dashboard into the interior of the vehicle.
- At least one suction pipe is arranged in the housing in addition to said openings in the dashboard.
- This at least one suction pipe has an outlet slot which is arranged in such a way that it is exposed to the air flow emerging from the openings in the dashboard.
- the airflow flowing past the outlet slot creates a vacuum or airflow within the intake manifold, which, for example, allows warm or hot air to be drawn into and mixed with the cold airflow flowing past the outside of the intake manifold.
- this at least one suction pipe is arranged along an extended side of the openings in the dashboard.
- the outlet slot of the intake manifold is substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the openings in the dashboard.
- suction tubes are provided, each of the tubes being arranged along opposite, elongated sides of the openings in the dashboard.
- the outlet slots run parallel to the longitudinal direction of the openings in the dashboard, but here on both sides of the openings in the dashboard.
- a first end of the intake manifold is provided as an air intake opening, while the outlet slot is formed axially in a side wall of the intake manifold. The outlet slot can extend over at least half the axial length of the suction pipe.
- the outlet slot has a different width along the axial direction of the intake manifold. In this way, depending on the axial position within the cold air flow, more or less intake air can be added to the cold air flow.
- FIGURE 1 shows a conventional fan unit showing the hot and cold air flows
- FIGURE 2 shows a cross section of a fan unit according to an embodiment of the present invention
- FIGURE 3 shows a sectional view of the unit of FIGURE 2 along section line 3-3
- FIGURES 4A and 4B show perspective views of the embodiment of FIGURES 2 and 3.
- FIGURE 1 shows a conventional fan unit for use in heating and / or cooling the interior of a motor vehicle.
- the fan unit 1 contains a housing 3, where a mixture of hot and cold air emerges from the opening in the dashboard. If, as discussed above, the mixing of the cold and hot air streams is incomplete due to the high speed of the cold air, this has the consequence that the air stream emerging from the openings in the dashboard 2 has layers. A strongly stratified air exiting the unit is perceptible and can be felt by an occupant of the vehicle.
- the present invention addresses this problem, as described in detail below in connection with preferred embodiments.
- FIGURE 2 shows a preferred embodiment of the present invention as a sectional view.
- Cold air flows through air ducts directly through the unit to the dashboard openings 20.
- the term “cold” air is to be understood relatively, namely as air that does not flow through a heating heat exchanger, for example, as ambient air or as air that comes out of the interior of the Another air flow, again based on FIGURE 2, flows through the heater core and such air is referred to as "hot” air for the present purposes. It is understood that the term “hot” is only relative to air that has not flowed through a heating heat exchanger.
- the housing 30 contains air passages to direct the hot and cold air streams to the dashboard openings 20, from which the resulting air stream flows into the interior of the motor vehicle.
- the hot and This mixing of the hot and cold air flows is intensified by at least one suction pipe 40, which is mounted in the housing 30 next to the dashboard openings 20.
- the suction pipe 40 is located next to a front of the dashboard openings and includes a outlet slot 41.
- the outlet slot 41 is arranged so that it is exposed to the air flow emerging from the dashboard openings.
- the outlet slot 41 is to the right of the exiting airflow where the air is colder.
- an air flow is generated within the intake manifold 40, which draws hot air from an inlet opening, which is provided at a first end 42 of the intake manifold 40.
- the colder portion of the exiting airflow is mixed with the hot air which is drawn laterally into the airflow through the intake manifold 40 (from the left in FIGURE 3).
- two suction pipes (40, 50) are arranged along the extended side of the dashboard openings 20.
- the second intake pipe 50 includes also an outlet slot 51 arranged to be exposed to the air flow as it exits the outlet openings 20. The flow of the air flow past the slot 51 creates an air flow through which heated air is drawn.
- the second suction pipe 50 also has an inlet opening 52 at a first end, which is located in the hot air flow.
- the arrangement of the tubes and their inlet ends is also evident from the perspective views of the fan unit shown in FIGURES 4A and 4B.
- the outlet slots 41 and 51 of the suction pipes 40 and 50 are formed essentially axially in a side wall of the respective pipes.
- the slots 41 and 51 can extend over the entire axial length of the respective tube, or any other desired axial length. In a preferred embodiment, the slots 41 and 51 extend over at least half the axial length of the respective tube 40, 50. As can be seen in FIGURE 3, the outlet slot 41 can also have a different width, depending on the axial position along the Intake pipe 40. This feature allows the amount of hot air delivered to a particular axial position in the air stream to be adjusted. The length and width of the outlet slot are determined according to the respective application or according to the requirements that a given ventilation system must meet. It is understood that the size and shape of the outlet slots, as well as the size and shape of the tubes, can be set as design parameters to ensure maximum efficiency in mixing the hot and cold air streams. After dimensioning the entire fan unit with regard to the pipes, no further settings are required. Furthermore, the shape of the suction pipes of the present invention is an integral part of the shape of the housing of the unit, so that no additional assembly work is required in the manufacture of the present fan unit.
- Another advantage of the present invention is a passive self-regulating effect which results from the use of the suction pipes.
- a maximum flow rate of the cold air results, particularly on one side of the air flow, in FIGURE 3, for example on the right side of the air flow.
- the maximum speed of the cold air flowing past the outlet slot 41 of the suction pipe 40 creates a maximum air flow of the hot air and, as a result, the desired mixing effect.
- the cold air flaps are set in the direction of the closed position, the speed of the cold air and thus also that of the air flow decreases, but the demand for hot air drawn in is also lower. This automatically regulates the amount of hot air that has to be mixed with the cold air flow.
- a baffle 60 is provided in the area of the first ends 42, 52 of the suction pipes 40, 50.
- the baffle 60 has a slight axial extent and is arranged so that it discharges hot air, which would otherwise flow directly into the dashboard opening 20, and directs it into the ice openings 42 and 52 of the tubes 40 and 50.
- the baffle is V-shaped, but this baffle can also have other shapes. The baffle prevents hot air from flowing directly into the dashboard opening 20 and also acts as a baffle that directs hot air into the area of the egg size openings 42, 52 of the suction pipes.
