Definitions

  • the invention relates to heated textile system and in particular to a wool rich, flexible, electrically powered heated textile system.
  • the system may be in the form of a pad, wrap, blanket, bed underlay, incorporated into a continental quilt, interior textile or apparel item.
  • heated articles in the form of pads, panels, mats, blankets and garments rely on hard wiring technology to produce the desired heating effect.
  • the main disadvantage to this is that it detracts from the aesthetic and comfort aspects of the item.
  • these heated panel elements consist of insulated electrically conductive wires, which run through the panel in a series of chamiels where heating is required.
  • a conductive element e.g. copper wire, may be used as the element, which may be wrapped helically around a core of insulating material e.g. man-made, filament fibres such as polyester, then covered by an electrically insulating sheath.
  • More recent versions may include a wire composed of a positive temperature coefficient alloy, which is wrapped around the insulating sheath. This is used to detect if a section of the cable begins to overheat. The whole system is then covered by a further electrically insulating sheath resulting in a cable with a diameter of between 2 and 4 millimetres. This relatively inflexible cable can cause discomfort to the user, especially when pressure is applied to the panel.
  • the conductive heating element is sufficiently flexible it may also be directly incorporated into the body of the article during manufacture i.e. by weaving or knitting.
  • An example being Kishimoto U.S. 5,422,462, where insulated conductive yarns and wires are selectively substituted for warp and weft yarns during the weaving process.
  • These conductive elements are then connected at their ends to an electrical power source.
  • Numerous alternatives to these hard wired systems have been proposed, including Orbat et. Al with U.S. 4,764,665.
  • This incorporates a heating element comprising a fabric which has a metallised coating which is inflexible, hence detracting from the overall aesthetics of any resulting textile article and also, due to the metallising process, not economically viable.
  • Coatings of electro conductive paints and polymers have also been proposed but here the issue lies with producing a durable element, both in terms of wear and laundering, and also achieving the necessary electrical connection to the required power source.
  • Other products are based on a fabric based panel which constitutes the resistive heater panel with the electrical conductor elements being applied in a further process either as an electrically conductive paste, wire or hot melt adhesive an example being Rock and Sharma U.S. 6,307,189.
