Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to a connector for coaxial cables or more particularly to a simplified coaxial connector and a method of attachment of a cable to the simplified coaxial connector.
  • the outer conductor must also be thoroughly cleared of all glue and adhesive material that may hinder or jam the parts encapsulated in the back nut during mounting and tightening or result in a poor electrical connection. This can prove to be quite difficult in practice and is certainly very time-consuming.
  • US patent No. 6,133,532 shows a connector of the type discussed where the back nut encapsulates three different moving parts (a locking device, guide surface and inner sleeve) as well as three separate O-ring seals.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide a simple, yet effective means of securely connecting a coaxial cable with either a corrugated or non-corrugated outer conductor to a coaxial connector.
  • the connector according to the invention may consist of only four parts, which is considerably less than current connectors have.
  • the back nut is made of one single tubular piece and does not enclose any further parts. This means that during the connection of a coaxial cable to the connector there is only one part to be adjusted in relation to the front end making the process very simple, easy to carry out in the field and difficult to mount and assemble incorrectly.
  • the procedure to mount the connector to the cable is also very simple and consists of the following steps: • Insulating jacket is removed from the cable end to be connected.
  • Adhesive material is cleared from the portion of the cable's outer conductor which is to come into contact with the front end's outer terminal. • The cable's outer conductor is formed to the back nut's inside circumference.
  • the outer conductor's stripped end portion is placed in the gap formed between the outer terminal's contact face and the back nut's abutting face.
  • the back nut is longitudinally displaced in relation to the front end until the outer conductor's end portion is clamped between the corresponding faces of the outer terminal and back nut.
  • a further object of the invention is to provide an economic and effective connector for coaxial cables. This is achieved through the connector's simple design and its comprising a limited number of parts, resulting in less to be manufactured and less time to assemble.

  • FIG. 2 illustrates an embodiment of a connector according to the invention in its near-closed state where, the cable (5) is mounted and in contact with the inner terminal (1 ) and while the cable's stripped and cleaned outer conductor (7) is positioned in the gap between the outer terminal (4) and the back nut (3).
  • the outer conductor (7) has been flared using a special tool which stops the back nut (3) slipping off the end of the cable (5) and enables the outer conductor (7) to be clamped between the front end (4) and the back nut (3). It should however be noted that this flaring might not be necessary as long as the outer conductor (7) has a secure conductive contact with the outer terminal (4) and/or back nut (3).
  • the presence of an O-ring (6) should also be noted. This O-ring ensures that moisture does not enter via the connection between the outer terminal (4) and the back nut (3) and interferes with the contacts.

  • the figure shows how the end portion (L) of the outer conductor is clamped between the back nut (3) and the outer terminal (4) with contact being along the corresponding faces (8, 9) ensuring a good mechanical connection and also conductive connection with the outer terminal's contact face (8).
  • the preferred, simplified process of cable mounting is carried out as follows:
  • the cable (5) end to be connected is stripped of its jacket and dielectric material to enable a conductive connection.
  • the cable (5) is inserted through the back nut (3) and the cable's outer conductor is flared and shaped along the back nut's (3) inner circumference with the aid of a specialised tool, while the extrusion is simultaneously cleaned of glue and the like.
  • the outer terminal (4) is then attached to the back nut (3) and screwed until there is a mechanical stop.
  • the connector and cable are now attached.
  • neither the jacket nor dielectric material is removed from the cable end to be connected, as long as there is a sufficient contact between the outer conductor (7) and the outer terminal (4).
  • the end portion of the cable (L) is inserted through the back nut (3).
  • a tool may then be used which prizes the end portion (L) of the outer conductor (7) away from the dielectric and flares it as mentioned before.
  • the flared end portion (L) to come into contact with the outer terminal's contact face (8) can be cleaned to ensure a stable connection and the flaring, when clamped between the corresponding faces (8, 9) ensures and secures mechanical connection.
  • Yet another embodiment is a combination of the two previous embodiments.
  • a sufficient amount of dielectric material is removed from the end portion (L) of the cable and the contact surface of the outer conductor (7) is cleaned and flared as before with the back nut (3) having been slid onto the end portion (L).
  • the back nut (3) is then longitudinally displaced so that the flared outer conductor (7) and adjoined insulating jacket are clamped securely between the outer terminal's contact face (8) and the abutting back nut face (9).
