Definitions
- Panel comprising an integrated assembly system
- the invention relates to a panel comprising an integrated assembly system and also to methods of assembling this panel and to uses thereof.
- Patent Application WO 02/20915 in the name of Solvay describes a panel comprising an integrated system which allows the said panel and at least one other complementary panel to be assembled in at least two spatial dimensions, the said integrated system consisting of profiles having a grooved or ribbed shape provided with a self-locking cam.
- the self-locking cam is provided with a reversible clipping device (flexible lip) which allows the said panels to be assembled/disassembled intentionally when subjected to a reasonable force in a given direction while preventing them from being accidentally disconnected during the assembly operation and/or in service.
- a reversible clipping device flexible lip
- specific fastening devices must be used which are then affixed to the panels following their assembly, which may in certain situations constitute a difficult, long and costly step, in particular with large panels.
- the object of the present invention is therefore to provide panels which can be assembled easily and reliably whatever their size or their curvature and whether or not they are intended to form a self-supporting structure.
- the present invention relates to a panel comprising an integrated system which allows it to be assembled with another complementary panel and additionally comprising at least one longitudinal housing, substantially parallel to the plane of the panel, which passes right through the panel, which is substantially parallel to the integrated assembly system and which houses a cable within it.
- panel is intended to denote a construction surface, that is to say a planar or slightly curved object having one dimension that is significantly smaller than the other two.
- This object can be based on any solid material, preferably insulating material, such as wood, plastic, etc. Preferably, it is based on plastic especially because of its lightness, ease of maintenance and of bending and its resistance to humidity, fungi, moss, etc.
- the panel essentially consists: - of a multilayer structure comprising an expanded plastic layer between two unexpanded plastic layers, as described in the abovementioned Application WO 02/20915 and the teaching of which in this respect is incorporated by reference in the present application, - of the integrated assembly system.
- "Essentially consists of indicates that main constituents of the panel (in terms of volume at least) are being referred to, which does not prevent use being made of add-on parts inserted into or fastened on the panel according to the invention (latches, metal reinforcements, etc.).
- foams polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, polystyrene, polyurethane, etc.
- PUR Polyurethane
- the layers of unexpanded material may be made of polyethylene, polypropylene or PVC, to mention only so-called commodity polymers.
- PVC is nevertheless preferred given its very widespread use, especially in the building sector, grades being available for use in this sector which have good weather resistance and good resistance to solar radiation.
- Flexible or rigid PVC may be used depending on the particular situation. These two materials may also be combined very advantageously, one unexpanded layer being made of flexible PVC, the other of rigid PVC.
- the use of flexible PVC in the outer layer (the layer which is exposed to the weather) makes it possible to take advantage of the possibilities of renovation which are offered by membranes made of flexible PVC. During renovation it will not be required to replace the whole panel. It will be sufficient to cover it with a new membrane layer using techniques which are well known for these products.
- the rigid PVC layer placed on the inner side of the panel will provide the panel with good rigidity.
- the expanded plastic layer consists of PUR and the two unexpended plastic layers consist of flexible PVC and/or rigid PVC.
- the panels comprise an integrated system which allows them to be assembled. It is therefore unnecessary to provide additional separate components. Assembly can thus be carried out rapidly and simply.
- This assembly system generally consists of two complementary profiles which are either one "male” -type profile and one "female"-type profile or two profiles which are identical but whose shape is such that these profiles can be fitted together. This latter variant is preferred because it makes it possible in particular to reduce the costs of manufacturing the panels.
- the concept of profile is well known in the art (part defined geometrically by the translation of a two-dimensional contour).
- the profiles may optionally additionally comprise additional periodic features, such as notches or protuberances formed at regular spacings along the profile.
- the panels will be provided with a profile on two of their opposite ends.
- the complementary panels will therefore in general be similar. However, for certain applications, it may prove useful to produce "exceptional" complementary panels having a profile on only one of their ends. Some panels may even comprise complementary profiles on more than two of their ends.
- the complementary panels may also be angle panels, edge panels, connecting panels, etc. For reasons of simplicity, it will be understood hereiribelow that reference is being made to a panel bearing two complementary profiles on two of its opposite ends.
- the profiles have a grooved or ribbed shape provided with a self-locking cam, that is to say with a device which prevents the panels from separating when they are assembled but whose design is such that it nevertheless allows disassembly of the panels if necessary.
- One end of the panel will be provided with the rib ("male" side) while - A -
- these profiles may also be formed by the ends of the layers of unexpanded material.
- These profiles may be made for example of metal (aluminium in particular), of plastic, etc. Plastics are preferred.
- these profiles are made of PVC, preferably rigid PVC, this being so even when they have a flexible lip, as stated above, the flexibility in fact resulting from the geometry of the said lip.
- the profiles constituting the assembly system incorporate the longitudinal housing provided for the cable, this making it possible to reduce the number of steps required for manufacturing the panel.
- the housing for the cable may be produced within the body of the panel on condition that the latter is strong enough (especially when applying a pull to the cable).
- the geometry and siting of the housing will be calculated so as not to damage the foam when pulling on the cable.
- the cable which can be inserted into the longitudinal housing of the panel according to the invention can be used for various purposes. Thus, it can serve to facilitate assembly/disassembly of the panels, especially when these are provided with a flexible lip acting as a reversible clipping device. In this case, simply pulling on the cable (to tension it), in a direction such that it generates a pressure which deforms the lip and "forces" the fitting of the panels, brings about their assembly in an easy manner.
- the cable also makes it possible to bend large panels, again by simply exerting tension in the relevant direction. It can also be used to fasten the panels to a framework by attaching its ends to the said framework or to supports fixed to or in the vicinity of the latter (the cable then functioning as a tensioner, as in tents).
- the term "cable” is intended to denote any substantially elongate (filiform) object which can serve as a tensioning and fastening element for the panels and can be introduced into the housing provided for this purpose.
- the panels are provided with a flexible lip, the siting of the housing, and therefore of the cable, is selected so that the said lip can be deformed and/or displaced.
- the cable may be based on any material having sufficient mechanical strength for the function to be performed. It may be based on metal (stainless steel) or a plastic (mainly polyamide)/metal (steel, optionally galvanized, or stainless steel) complex.
- the panels according to the invention may be produced by many techniques well known in joinery and/or plastics technology.
- the manufacturing methods described in Application WO 02/20915 are particularly suitable and are incorporated by reference in the present application.
- a cable housing which of course does not necessarily have to be employed, provides the panels according to the invention with a wide variety of assembly methods and uses.
- these panels can be used to assemble both planar structures and curved structures (case of bent panels), the use of cables during assembly/disassembly being especially useful in the second case, it being possible for example for the planar structures to be assembled solely via the integrated assembly system (complementary profiles).
- the present invention also relates to a method for assembling at least two panels as described above, in which cables are introduced into the longitudinal housings before assembling the panels and in which the said assembly is essentially produced by pulling/pressing on at least one of the cables (6, 6')-
- the term "essentially” indicates that in this variant of the invention the assembly is not necessarily produced solely by means of this pulling/pressing on the cables but that it can also be assisted by appropriate manipulation (deformation, sliding, etc.) of the integrated assembly system.
- the said planar or curved structures may or may not be self-supporting (that is to say may or may not require a framework).
- the cable will advantageously serve to fasten the panels to the said framework.
- the present invention also relates to a method for assembling at least two panels as described above and for fastening them to a framework, in which cables are introduced into the longitudinal housings provided for this purpose before assembling the panels and fastening them to the framework and in which these cables at least partially help in fastening the panels to the framework.
- additional fastening means bolts, rivets, etc.
- the integrated system for joining the panels to one another may advantageously be simplified.
- this system comprises a flexible lip, it is possible for the latter to be removed, this having the advantage of facilitating disassembly of the panels.
- the use of a single cable per profile may be sufficient both for performing the function of assisting assembly/disassembly and that of fastening to a framework.
- the panels according to the invention may have any desired size, but for practical reasons this is generally less than or equal to 10-12 m, which already makes it possible to construct structures of relatively large size using a single row of juxtaposed panels.
- use will be made of at least two parallel rows of assembled panels, the junction between rows preferably being formed on a support (ridge of a framework for example).
- the invention also relates to the use of a panel according to the invention as defined above, in particular as a lining for the insulation of premises or parts of vehicles whose interior temperature is controlled, and also as a wall for the manufacture of various insulating structures.
- these panels may be used for extremely varied applications, such as the production of refrigerated warehouses, cold rooms and/or rooms for storing agri-food products; the construction of operating theatres for hospitals; the production of bodies for transport vehicles; the insulation of swimming pools; the construction of lightweight, low-cost dwellings, of various shelters, etc.
- the panels according to the invention are also advantageously used for storing agri-food products, for constructing stables, etc., particularly when the panels are multilayer insulating panels (according to an advantageous variant detailed hereinabove), preferably panels based on plastic, and, in a very particularly preferred manner, panels based on the complex of flexible PVC and rigid PUR/PVC foam.
- multilayer insulating panels accordinging to an advantageous variant detailed hereinabove
- panels based on plastic preferably panels based on plastic
- panels based on the complex of flexible PVC and rigid PUR/PVC foam panels based on the complex of flexible PVC and rigid PUR/PVC foam.
- the excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties, the sealing function, the corrosion resistance, the ease of assembly (and disassembly) and finally the economical nature of the panels according to this variant of the invention make possible a particularly competitive use in these applications.
- the assembly system ensures that the panels according to the invention keep these properties for a long period of use.
- Another advantageous field of application of the panels according to the invention is that of constructing temporary shelters, infirmaries, etc., in refugee camps, for example.
- these panels may form the walls of an emergency shelter supplied in parcel form, as described in Application
- the said walls are arranged on a transportation pallet which will serve as a floor in the shelter.
- the variant consisting of multilayer insulating panels, preferably panels based on plastic (and in a very particularly preferred manner, panels based on the complex of flexible PVC and rigid PUR/PVC foam) is particularly advantageous.
- Figure 1 depicts (in cross section) an example of two panels assembled according to the invention.
- These panels are identical and each comprise a flexible PVC membrane (1), a rigid PVC sheet (2), a layer of PUR foam (3) and two assembly profiles at each of their ends, only one of which (4 and 4') is represented per panel.
- the PUR foam (3) which adheres to the membrane (1), to the sheet (2) and to the profile (4), provides cohesion of the assembly.
- the profiles (4 and 4') are made of rigid PVC and they are identical but have a shape such that they can be fitted into one another. They each comprise a longitudinal housing (5 and 5') into which two cables are inserted (6 and 6'). They also each comprise a flexible lip (7 and 7') which, during the assembly of the panels, deforms so as to become housed in a groove (8' and 8) of suitable shape in the complementary profile. These grooves (8 and 8') are provided with a stop (9 and 9') which prevents accidental unclipping of the panels.
- the left-hand panel is as it were mounted on (or fitted in) the right-hand panel (which may form part of the start of a construction, for example) and the aid for assembling the two panels is essentially provided by the cable (6).
- this cable (6) is simply pulled downwards to generate a pressure which causes the flexible lips (7 and T) to deform and clip into the complementary profile.
- the cables may be used as elements for listening the panels to any support (framework; floor of a shelter, etc.).
- the two cables (6 and 6') may be used to release the flexible lips (7, 7') from their respective housing (8% 8) by pulling/pressing sufficiently on the cables.
- the PUR foam (3) is subjected to little stress and is not at risk of mechanical damage.
