  • the invention is a ladder provided in a disassembled condition which may be assembled on site to the required length.
  • ladders are required to be tailored to the required length.
  • ladders of different sizes are required to accommodate the constraints dictated by the position of the manhole relative to the ground. These constraints additional to the constraints imposed by the various regulations and standards relating to ladders.
  • a particular problem with ladders for sewer systems is that by the time the civil works are completed, the length of the ladder ordered, whilst meeting the specification as designed, may no longer meet the dimensions of the sewer after construction. This may be due to various factors arising during civil construction which change the sewer structure as originally designed.
  • a typical method of fixing ladders relative to a manhole is to insert a ferrule into the manhole wall so that a step may be secured thereto.
  • a ferrule With the settling and movement of the earth surrounding the manhole, it is quite common for water and other contaminants to pass through the hole and into the sewer. This leakage is undesirable and generally may only be rectified by digging an access hole adjacent the manhole to allow a repairer to attend to the problem from outside the manhole.

  • the ladder may be made of a non-conductive material for electrical applications or may be made of a non-corrosive material for the use in areas where corrosion is a factor.
  • Each elongate element 13 may have at its respective ends a slightly modified secondary support member whereby, for instance, either the first end portion, in the case of the secondary support member at the top end of the elongate element, or the second end portion, in the case of the secondary support member at the bottom end of the elongate element, is not present. This provides the elongate element with structurally sound ends for positioning on or against a surface.
