Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a device for pre-setting the length of a tool unit (1) consisting of a rotary tool (3), e.g. a drill or grinder, and a tool holder (5), which holds the shank (7) of the rotary tool (3) in a press fit in a receiving opening (11) of a collet section (13) and releases said shank when the collet section (13) is heated. The inventive device is equipped with a length measuring assembly (23), whose measuring element (31), which can be aligned with the free end (19) of the rotary tool (3), can be set at a selectable distance from a holding receptacle (25), which permits the positioning and decoupling of a coupling section (15) of the tool holder (5). In a first step, in which the tool holder (5) is removed from the holding receptacle (25), the end of the rotary tool (3) furthest away from the shank (7) is aligned with the measuring element (31) that has been set at the desired distance, whilst the end of the shank (7) rests against a stop surface (33) on the end of a stop mandrel (37), which projects centrically beyond the holding receptacle (25) and whose length can be adjusted, but nevertheless locked, in relation to said receptacle (25), and the stop mandrel (37) is then locked. In a second step, the rotary tool (3) is removed when the stop mandrel (37) is locked and the tool holder (5) is pushed onto the stop mandrel (37) and coupled to the holding receptacle (25). In a third step, the collet section (13) of the tool holder (5) is heated and the shank (7) of the rotary tool (3) is inserted into the heated collet section (13) until it rests against the stop surface (33). The pre-setting operation does not require complex equipment and a conventional length setting device can be used. As the length is set independently of any thermal expansion of the tool holder (5), a high degree of precision can be achieved.
