Definitions
- the invention relates to a cover for use with a food tray or dish.
- the food may be prepared in so-called gastronomy trays, which are trays that can be taken directly from the oven to the buffet table. Such trays a conventionally made of stainless steel. If the food in the dish or tray is to be kept warm it may be placed on a heating plate that support heat to the under side of the tray. Unfortunately, a significant loss of heat appears in this manner of presenting the food. Additionally, the tray may be worn and/or scratched over time such that the tray is not presentable. Furthermore, food may be deposited on the upper edge of the tray or even running down on the outer side of the tray, which is also not presentable.
- a cover that comprises an outer wall for surrounding the tray or dish and an inwardly protruding flange arranged at a height of the outer wall that exceeds a height of the tray or dish and is adapted to cover an upper edge of the tray or dish when the cover is arranged over the tray or dish, an edge of said flange defining an opening provided in the cover.
- the outer walls of the cover prevents the tray or dish from being displaced or rotated, and they also conceals the outer side of the tray or dish where food may be deposited.
- the inwardly protruding flange covers the upper edge of the tray or dish where food also may be deposited.
- the cover conceals or covers the outer side and the up- per edge of the tray or dish and thereby presents the food in the tray or dish in an appealing manner. If the tray or dish is positioned on a heating plate the cover also forms an outer shell that retains heat from the heating plate in the space between the tray or dish and the sidewalls and flange of the cover.
- the inwardly protruding flange furthermore reflects any heat emitted from the tray or dish such that the heat loss is minimised.
- the cover may be provided with at least one handle.
- the at least one handle is arranged upwardly protruding from the flange, which entails that more covers can be positioned close to each other without mixing the handles.
- the at least one handle is mushroom-shaped which ensures a safe grip by the hand and also ensures that it can be easily cleaned.
- the flange may advantageously be provided with a cutlery holder - preferably shaped as a hook - that extends from the edge of the flange into the opening.
- a cutlery holder prevents cutlery, such as a spoon or the like, from slipping into the food in the tray or disk and thereby prevents the food from being contaminated by bacteria.
- the flange is arranged at an upper edge of the outer wall.
- the cover may be made of any suitable material, but preferably it is made of stainless steel which is relatively easy to keep hygienic clean.
- Figure 1 shows a cover according to the invention in a preferred embodiment and a food tray positioned on a heating plate;
- Figure 2 shows the same as Figure 1 when the cover is arranged to cover the food tray
- Figure 3 shows a cross-section taken along the line Ill-Ill in Figure 2;
- Figure 4 shows a detail of the cover shown in Figures 1-3.
- FIG. 1 shows a cover 1 according to the invention in a preferred embodiment.
- the cover 1 comprises an outer wall 2 and an inwardly protruding flange 3 that in the shown embodiment is located at the upper edge of the outer wall 2.
- the edge 4 of the inwardly protruding flange 3 defines an open- ing 5.
- the cover 1 is shaped as a box without any bottom and with an opening 5 in the top surface.
- a mushroom-shaped handle 6 is arranged on the upper surface of the inwardly protruding flange 3 at each end of the cover 1. These handles 6 make handling of the cover 1 easier.
- a cutlery holder 7 is arranged inwardly protruding from the edge 4 of the inwardly protruding flange 3.
- Figure 1 also shows a heating plate 8 provided with a food tray 9 in which food 10 has been prepared.
- the heating plate 8 may be of any known kind, e.g. an electrically heated heating plate.
- the food tray 9 may be of any known kind, e.g. a so-called gastronomy tray made of stainless steel.
- the cover 1 is adapted to fit over the food tray 9 with the outer wall 2 surrounding the outer side 11 of the food tray 9. This is shown in more details in Figures 2 and 3.
- Figure 2 shows the situation where the cover 1 is arranged to cover the food tray 9, and it is clearly seen that access to the food 10 is provided through the opening 5 in the cover 1.
- Figure 2 also shows that the upper edge 12 of the food tray 9 is concealed by the inwardly protruding flange 3 of the cover 1.
- the cover 1 fits relatively snugly over the food tray 9, i.e. only a small gap exists between the outer walls 2 of the cover 1 and the upper edge 12 of the food tray 9. This entails that the food tray 9 cannot be displaced or rotated inside the cover 1. Furthermore, if the heating plate 8 is provided with an upwardly protruding bead 12 as shown it is ensured that the cover 1 and thereby the food tray 9 cannot by displaced beyond the edge of the heating plate 8.
- FIG. 3 also shows that heat from the heating plate 8 is trapped between the inside of the cover 1 and the outside of the food tray 9. Furthermore, any heat escaping between the upper edge 12 of the food tray 9 and the inside of the cover 1 is reflected towards the food 10 by the inwardly protruding flange 3 of the cover 1. Thereby the loss of heat is considerably reduced as compared to a situation where no cover 1 is used.
- Figure 4 shows a portion of the cover 1 provided with a cutlery holder 7.
- the cutlery holder 7 is arranged as a hook that protrudes from the edge 4 of the inwardly protruding flange 3 into the opening 5 of the cover 1.
- the cutlery holder 7 comprises a bent metal wire that is welded to the underside of the inwardly protruding flange 3.
- Figure 4 shows how a spoon 13 is retained by the cutlery holder 7.
- the aim of the cutlery holder 7 is to prevent the cutlery, such as the spoon 13, to slip into the food 10, which would cause the food 10 to be contaminated with bacteria and also would mess up the cutlery.
- the cover comprises a surrounding outer wall and an inwardly protruding flange that is adapted to cover the upper an outer edge of a food tray or dish.
- the cover may advantageously be provided with manoeuvring handles and cutlery holders as shown in the Figures.
- the cover according to the invention has been described with reference to a preferred embodiment which suits over a single gastronomy tray.
- the cover may sized to fit over more than one tray, either by using smaller trays or by increasing the size of the cover. If the cover is to be used in con- nection with two or more trays, the cover may advantageously by provided with one or more intermediary flanges that extend from one side of the cover opening to the other in order to conceal the abutting edges of the trays.
- the cover may be made of any suitable material, but stainless steel is pre- ferred since it is easy to shape and is easy to keep hygienically clean.
