Abstract

A method of producing a mosaic is disclosed. A pattern sheet (26) is placed on a surface, the pattern sheet having printed thereon the pattern to be applied to the mosaic. A template (18) is placed on or above the pattern sheet, the template (18) comprising a plurality of compartments (20) for receiving individual mosaic pieces. Individual mosaic pieces (22) are then placed into respective compartments of the template (18) in accordance with the pattern on the pattern sheet (26). Once the desired mosaic pattern has been completed, the template (18) is removed. Also disclosed is an apparatus for producing a mosaic comprising the template and the pattern sheet (26).

Description

Mosaic Production
This invention relates generally to mosaic production and, more particularly, to a method and apparatus for producing mosaics for use as required.
It has been popular for may years to create and use mosaics as wall or floor tiles, or as individual wall hangings or ornaments, for example. The conventional method of creating professional mosaics requires high skill levels and long lead times, because the patterns have typically been created free-hand by placing pieces of glass or stone together in the desired pattern. As a result, professional mosaics and mosaic tiles tend to be very expensive and relatively inaccessible to the general public. Nevertheless, mosaics and mosaic tiles have become very popular in recent years.
I have now devised an arrangement which overcomes the above-mentioned problems.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided apparatus for producing a mosaic, the apparatus comprising a template comprising a plurality of compartments for receiving individual mosaic pieces, and a pattern sheet on which is printed or otherwise provided the pattern to be applied to the mosaic.
In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus includes a jig or template receiver, for receiving and supporting the template and pattern sheet.
Also in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method of producing a mosaic, the method comprising the steps of placing a pattern sheet on a surface, the pattern sheet having printed thereon the pattern to be applied to the mosaic, placing a template on or above said pattern sheet, the template comprising a plurality of compartments for receiving individual mosaic pieces, placing individual mosaic pieces into respective compartments of the template in accordance with the pattern on the pattern sheet, and removing the template when the desired mosaic pattern has been completed. In a preferred embodiment, the method includes the step of applying adhesive, such as a clear plastic contact adhesive, below the template, onto which adhesive the individual mosaic pieces are applied. The template beneficially comprises a lattice network of compartments, in the form of, for example, a generally honeycombed structure.
The individual mosaic pieces may, for example, comprise pre-cut marble tesserae, which may be substantially uniform in size and shape.
Thus, the present invention provides a method and apparatus for use in building isotropic, geometric mosaics using a range of pre-cut uniform marble tesserae, or the like. It facilitates a quick, efficient and consistent build process, which eliminates the high level skills and long lead times that are normally associated with the creation of such mosaics.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a jig or template receiver of apparatus according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view of a pattern template of apparatus according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a schematic plan view of the template of Figure 2 in position on a pattern sheet.
Figure 4 is a perspective plan view of an arrangement according to an exemplary embodiment of the invention, comprising the base plate of thejig, the pattern sheet and the pattern template, in use; and
Figure 5 is an exploded view of the arrangement of Figure 4, with thejig, the pattern template and the pattern sheet shown separately. Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, a jig or template receiver 10 of apparatus according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention comprises a base 12 having two opposing side walls 14 extending upwardly, substantially at right angles, from the sides of the base 12. The base 12 is provided with rows of locating apertures 16 at intervals along its length.
Referring to Figure 2 of the drawings, the apparatus further comprises a pattern template 18 consisting of a plurality of raised fins forming a lattice network of compartments 20 which are open at the top and at the bottom, for receiving pre-cut marble tesserae 22. The pattern template 18 further comprises rows of locating pins 24 extending at right angles from the lower surface of the template 18 to correspond with the rows of locating apertures 16 in the jig 10.
In use, and in addition with reference to Figures 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings, a pattern sheet 26, preferably laminated, is placed on the base 12 of the jig 10. The pattern sheet may have depicted thereon any desired mosaic pattern 28, including any one of the vast range of geometric patterns that were typically found in Hellenistic and Roman mosaics. A clear plastic contact adhesive (not shown) is laid over the pattern sheet 26, and the pattern template 18 is then placed over the pattern sheet 26 and adhesive layer such that the locating pins 24 are in the respective locating apertures 16 of the jig 10. This holds the assembly firmly in position during the build process.
Pieces 22 of pre-cut marble tesserae, for example 1cm3 (although any suitable size may be used), are placed into respective compartments 20 of the pattern template 18, the tesserae corresponding to the shapes inherent in the pattern template 18 and the colour as shown on the laminated pattern sheet 26. The colours on the laminated pattern could also be identified numerically, say, to aid visually impaired users, such as those with colour blindness. Once the mosaic is completed, it can be removed from the pattern template 18 and used as required, i.e. as an individual wall hanging, ornament, or as a tile forming part of a tiled area of a wall or other surface.
An embodiment of the present invention has been described above by. way of example only, and it will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that modifications and variations can be made to the described embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
