Definitions
- the invention relates to a threading apparatus according to the appended claim 1 for conveying a tail separated from a web in the section of a paper or paperboard machine or a finishing machine for paper or paperboard.
- a narrow so-called tail is separated from the edge of the full-width web to be conveyed in the section preceding the section of guiding the full-width web.
- the purpose of this process is to ensure a controlled, flawless travel of the tail as well as the entire web, wherein only after the tail has run without problems in the section, a portion following the tail that is substantially wider than said tail is separated from the web by the cutting it with a water jet cutter, which wider portion can be broadened further to make it possible to guide the full-width web following the tail to the section.
- the tail is separated from the full-width web preferably before the calender, for example in the drying section.
- the separation is conducted by cutting a strip from the edge of the web by means of water jet cutting.
- the strip is guided to be conveyed by threading means in such a manner that the threading means form a so-called jaw, a nip in which the tail is guided.
- the threading means can be composed of two rope loops that are arranged to move in parallel with each other next to the frame of the calender via grooves located in the rolls of the calender. At first, the threading means form a gap, a rope jaw in which the tail is guided at that stage when the threading means are guided in a rope groove or the like located in the roll.
- the leading edge of the tail travels between the threading means and follows the travel of the same as they wind through the calender roll assembly, drawing the tail in the desired section behind itself.
- the web following the tail is thus safely conveyed through the calender.
- the threading means continue their travel to the starting point in which they meet and form a new jaw. Threading through the calender in the above-described manner is discussed for example in the Finnish patent 62874 and in the international publication WO 99/31317.
- the international publication WO 99/41451 discloses belt-like threading means.
- the threading must be conducted in stages through the paper or paperboard machine or finishing machine for paper or paperboard, in other words at given points in which the threading section ends, the tail is discharged from the threading means and guided aside from the travel path of the web. Thereafter the web is spread in full width from the width of the tail. When the travel of the web in full width through the threading section has been secured, it is again possible to separate the tail and guide it between the next threading means, which, in turn, convey the leading edge of the tail again through the next section.
- successive pairs of threading means are required in the machine direction in the threading apparatus, and a separate drive and a clamp for each pair.
- the apparatus according to the present invention utilizes the above- described rope pair and belt pair principle in the act of conveying the tail. It is an aim of the invention to introduce one apparatus by means of which it is possible to implement two threading operations in two successive units in the travel direction of the web.
- the apparatus is preferably used in connection with a calender composed of several roll stacks.
- a calender of two roll stacks is composed of two separate stacks of rolls following each other in the travel direction of the web, the web being conveyed through said roll stacks.
- a new tail is captured from the web, said tail being guided to a new rope jaw or belt jaw be- tween the roll stacks.
- the threading can be implemented through both threading sections (roll stacks) with the same pair of threading means by arranging an opening and closing jaw in the interface between the sections.
- the apparatus according to the invention for conveying a tail separated from a web in the section of a paper or paperboard machine or finishing machine for paper or paperboard that comprises a first unit and at least a second unit, the apparatus comprising a pair of threading means conveyed via the first unit, is primarily characterized in that said pair of threading means is also conveyed via the next unit, wherein the pair of threading means is separated between the units to attain a threading nip.
- the apparatus according to the invention is characterized by the features disclosed in the dependent claims.
- Fig. 1 shows a preferred embodiment of the invention arranged in connection with other finishing devices
- Fig. 2 shows another embodiment of the invention in more detail.
- Fig. 1 shows a calender C of two roll stacks for finishing paper and/or paperboard that constitutes a preferred embodiment of the apparatus according to the present invention.
- the calender is an on-line multinip calender that contains hard-faced, advantageously heated rolls, and soft-faced, advantageously polymer-coated rolls.
- the invention is especially useful in an on-line apparatus in which a paper or paperboard web, and in corresponding manner a tail are conveyed at the production speed of the web.
- the calender C comprises two separate roll stacks R1 , R2, through which the web W is conveyed. It should be noted that there may also be several roll stacks.
- a tail is separated from the web W in a known manner, for example by means of water jet cutting, said tail being guided between the threading means 4, 5, to be conveyed by the threading means 4, 5.
- the threading means can advantageously be composed of a pair of ropes, but the threading means can also be a pair of belts that is arranged to convey the tail in a corresponding manner.
- the threading means can also be another corresponding solution in which two separate endless members convey the tail, wherein the threading means first travel separated from each other until they meet to receive the end of the tail, whereafter they travel in parallel with the tail in between them until they are finally separated to release the tail.
- the first threading operation (in the figure arrow A) is finished.
- the rope nip i.e. the rope jaw is opened and the pair of ropes is separated to release the web W.
- the stacks of calender rolls form a winding threading path for the web, in which the web turns around several times.
- the web W is first guided in a narrow form successfully through the first roll stack, and the first threading operation is finished.
- the web W is passed in the form of a band down to a suction device out of the normal travel path of the paper web, and from this web W it is possible to capture a new tail.
- the new tail is guided on suction platforms 7 (on suction conveyor belts known as such), to be conveyed towards the second roll stack R2.
- the new rope jaw receives the leading edge of the tail, wherein the ropes 4, 5 pull said leading edge and the tail following the same through the second roll stack R2 in the calender and further to the reel-up (not shown in the drawing).
- the web W is spread in its full width and guided in a corresponding manner through the calender further to the reel-up.
- Fig. 2 shows a threading apparatus according to the invention in more detail.
- the apparatus comprises a guide roll 1 and a press roll 2, between which a pair of ropes travels and which are arranged to separate the pair of ropes 4, 5.
- the guide roll 1 By means of the guide roll 1 , the second rope is deviated from the travel path.
- the threading ropes 4, 5 are separated from each other and transferred aside by means of lateral transfer wheel assemblies 6.
- lateral transfer wheel assemblies 6 there may be a changing number of lateral transfer wheel assemblies 6. If both ropes are guided aside, it is advantageous to use four lateral transfer wheel assemblies 6, as shown in Fig. 2.
- one 4 of the threading ropes is guided aside while the other 5 travels on its path.
- two lateral transfer wheel assemblies are sufficient.
- the number of lateral transfer wheel assemblies may also deviate from the above-mentioned number.
- the suction device 3 conveys the web to a pulper known as such.
- the new tail is guided to suction platforms 7 that convey the tail towards the second roll stack.
- the threading ropes 4, 5 meet again and form a new rope nip 8.
- the tail is transferred between the ropes in the rope nip 8. Thereafter the transfer of the tail is implemented in a known manner through the roll stack.
- the web W is spread and guided in a corresponding manner through the roll stacks in the calender.
- the above-described preferred embodiment of the invention comprises the stacks of calender rolls as examples of the units via which the web must be conveyed first as a narrow tail.
- a unit comprises rolls via which the web is guided, wherein the rolls determine a winding path for the web.
- the invention is not limited solely to the embodiment presented in the example above, but it is possible to implement the apparatus according to the invention in a number of different ways without deviating from the basic idea of the invention.
- the invention can also be applied in finishing machines in which a previously produced paper or paperboard web is treated, said paper or paperboard web being reeled on a reel in between.
