Definitions
- the present invention relates to a mechanical device for displaying hours and minutes. If we know the digital display of the hours and minutes by liquid crystals or light-emitting diodes for quartz watches, this is practically unknown in the case of mechanical watches. Even if some attempts have been made, in any case there is no known display device in which the changes in hours and minutes are all instantaneous.
- a mechanical digital display device for a watch is also not known, in which all the figures are placed side by side, allowing easy reading and have the same size and a sufficient size, for reading without a magnifying glass, which supposes that the device separately displays the units and tens, both hours and minutes.
- the present invention specifically aims to overcome the difficulties inherent in the digital display of hours and minutes by mechanical means, which has the effect of doubling the number of display members compared to traditional analog display.
- the subject of this invention is a mechanical device for displaying the hours and minutes as defined by claim 1.
- the advantage of the display device which is the subject of the present invention is that it allows instant digital display of the hours and minutes by mechanical means.
- FIG. 1 is a plan view of the entire mechanical display of the timepiece including the hour and minute display object of the invention
- FIG. 2 is a plan view similar to that of FIG. 1, but without the various indicator disks making it possible to see all of the display mechanisms of this timepiece
- Figure 3 is a partial plan view of Figure 2 illustrating the minute display mechanism
- Figure 4 is a sectional view along line IV-IV of Figure 3
- FIG. 5 is another partial plan view of FIG. 2, illustrating the mechanism for displaying the hours and the day and night hours
- Figure 6 is a sectional view along line VI-VI of Figure 5
- Figure 7 is a partial plan view of Figure 2, illustrating the display correction mechanism in the disengaged position
- Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7, showing the display correction mechanism in the engaged position
- FIG. 9 is a sectional view along the line IX-IX of FIG. 8.
- the timepiece illustrated here by way of example includes several indications derived from the time, in particular the days of the week, the calendar of the month, the phase of the moon and the day and night hours. It is already specified that these other indications are only illustrated on an optional basis, but that the present invention is not limited to their presence in association with the display of the hours and minutes.
- the hours are indicated by two concentric discs 1, 2 bearing res- pectively the tens digits (0, 1 for a display of the hours in twelve hour increments) and the ten digits' of the units, that the minutes are indicated by two non-concentric discs 3, 4 carrying the tens digits (0 to 5) and the ten unit digits.
- Two digits side by side of the pair of hour discs 1, 2 are aligned with two adjacent digits of the pair of minute discs 3, 4.
- These two adjacent pairs of digits aligned with the discs of hours 1, 2, respectively minutes 3, 4 appear through two rectangular apertures A, respectively B, formed through the dial of watch C (FIGS. 4 and 6) which covers the various display discs illustrated in FIG. 1, like the windows commonly used, in particular to indicate the date of the month.
- the mechanism for driving the minute discs 3, 4 (FIGS. 3, 4) comprises a drive wheel 5 located at the center of the movement of the watch.
- the center of this drive wheel 5 has a square opening 5a which adjusts to a part of the same section of the roadway (not shown) of the conventional timer train, so that this drive wheel 5 rotates at a rate of 1 turn / hour. It meshes with a 6 minute mobile with a 2/1 ratio, so that this minute wheel makes two revolutions per hour. It is integral with a 7 minute instant jump wheel which has 30 triangular teeth, each tooth of which constitutes an instant jump cam. For this purpose, one of the faces of each tooth has a radial orientation by relative to the center of the wheel 7, while the other is inclined and constitutes an arcing ramp.
- An intermediate lever 8 is pivotally mounted about an axis by a fixing screw 9.
- This lever 8 has a toothing in engagement with a toothing of a minute lever 10 pivotally mounted about a axis by a fixing screw 11
- This minute lever 10 carries a drive pawl 12 applied against a stop 10a of the lever 10 by a spring 13.
- This drive pawl 12 is engaged with a toothing of a star toothed wheel 14 of ten teeth triangular, integral with the minute units disc 4.
- This star gear 14 is positioned by a jumper spring 15.
- a spring 16 constantly tends to rotate the intermediate lever 8 in the opposite direction to that of the watch hands, thus maintaining permanent contact between this lever 8 and one of the teeth or cam of the instantaneous jump wheel 7. Being given the link between the scales 8 and 10 by their respective toothed sectors, the minutes scale 10 is moved clockwise when the intermediate scale 8 is moved in the opposite direction and vice versa.
- the tens of minutes disc 3 is secured to a star gear 17 having twelve triangular teeth, positioned by a jumper spring 18.
- This wheel 17 is offset relative to the star gear 14 secured to the units disc of minutes 4.
- the relative positions of the two star gear wheels 14, 17 are such that there is an area in which their respective teeth overlap.
- a pin 17a is fixed, perpendicular to the plane of the star gear 17, at the center of each triangular tooth, thus forming projections. These pins extend in the direction of the star gear in 14, one of the ten teeth 14a (FIG.
- the time display mechanism Figures 5, 6) has a camshaft for instantaneous jumps of the hours 19, coaxial with the drive wheel 5 of the minutes, but which is integral with the barrel wheel (not shown) of the conventional clockwork, so that it does one turn in twelve hours and turns clockwise.
- This wheel 19 has twelve cams in the shape of triangular teeth, one of their respective faces having a radial orientation.
- an instant jump lever 20 is pressed by a spring 21 against the cam wheel 19.
- the other end of this lever carries a pawl 22, pressed against a stop 20a, by a spring 23.
- This pawl 22 is in engagement with a toothing of a reference 24a of 24 teeth of a mobile 24 which rotates in 24 hours.
- This mobile 24 has a second toothing of a second return 24b of four teeth, arranged symmetrically in pairs.
- the two references 24a, 24b are integral and coaxial with each other.
- the teeth of the reference 24a are positioned by a jumper spring 33.
- the toothing 24a of the wheel 24 is engaged with a star toothed wheel of twelve teeth 25 integral with the disc 2 of the hour units and positioned by a jumper spring 34, while the teeth 24b are engaged with a toothed wheel in star 26 of six teeth, integral with the disc 1 for tens of hours and positioned by a jumper spring 35.
- the connection between the teeth 24b and the star wheel 26 is not carried out by means of the teeth of this wheel 26 , but by pins 26a (FIG. 6) which project perpendicularly to this star wheel 26.
- the angular positions of the four teeth 24b of the teeth are chosen to drive the star wheel 26 for the first time during the passage of the units to that of the ten and a second time after the display of the number 12 to return to the units, this cycle repeating a second time in 24 hours.
- the display is done by dividing the duration of a day into two 12-hour periods.
- a disc 27 ( Figures 1 and 6) which moves under a window D is fixed to a star wheel 28 ( Figures 5 and 6) positioned by a jumper spring 29.
- This star wheel 28 is driven each 12 hours by a finger 30a secured to a pinion 30 which makes two turns in 24 hours, driven by a wheel 31 engaged with a coaxial wheel 32 and secured to the wheel 24.
- the disc 27 bears indications capable of distinguishing one on the other, the two 12-hour periods.
- the two periods indicated by the disc 27 each have 12 hours. It does not necessarily coincide with the 12-hour periods of the time display discs 1, 2.
- the disc 27 distinguishes between day and night, the start of each period can for example begin cer at 6 am, respectively in the evening. If the disc 27 indicates the hours in the Anglo-Saxon way, it can carry the indications AM and PM and in this case, the periods will coincide with the two 12-hour periods of the discs 1, 2.
- the instantaneous jump display mechanism which has just been described has the particularity that its various organs cannot rotate in the opposite direction to that of the hands of the watch. Indeed, the presence of the cam wheels 7 and 19, the triangular teeth of which each have a side with radial orientation, allows rotation only in one direction, since in the opposite direction, the radial sides of the teeth block the wheel when the rocker is at the bottom of a space separating two teeth. If we could drive these cogs in both directions as in other watches, we could cause great damage to the movement of the watch.
- This mechanism comprises a conventional winding stem 36 on which is mounted an equally conventional sliding pinion 37, which traditionally slides on a square section portion of the winding rod 36, so that this sliding pinion 37 is integral in rotation of this winding stem what that is its position along this winding stem 36.
- This sliding pinion 37 comprises, like all conventional sliding pinions, a groove in which a rocker 38 is engaged.
- This lever 38 is controlled by a pull tab 39 pivotally mounted and of which a finger is engaged, in the usual way, in a groove of the winding stem.
- the pull tab 39 pivots and controls the pivoting of the lever 38 which moves the sliding pinion 37 in two positions illustrated respectively in FIGS. 7 and 8.
- This reference 40 has a Breguet 40a type edge teeth (FIG. 9) engaged with a Breguet 41a type edge teeth also, integral with a second coaxial reference 41.
- the second reference 41 is pivotally mounted on a tubular pivoting element 42 in which a coil spring 43 is housed.
- This spring 43 presses the two sawtooth teeth 40a, 41a against each other, so that the gear 40 does not transmit its rotation to the gear 41 in one direction, since in the other direction, the sawtooth teeth disengage and cause the disengagement of the gear 41, the latter being able to slide axially on the tubular pivoting element 42.
- This arrangement therefore makes it possible to drive the hours and minutes display mechanisms only in the desired direction, thus avoiding any risk of deterioration of these mechanisms.
- the lever 38 ends in two arms forming a gripping element 38a between which is located one end of a correction lever 44 which carries three references 45, 46, 47 and which is pivoted coaxially with the reference 46.
- a correction lever 44 which carries three references 45, 46, 47 and which is pivoted coaxially with the reference 46.
- the three references 45, 46, 47 are disconnected from the reference 41 and the pinion 14a integral with the star wheel 14 of the minute units.
- the correction lever 44 is moved and simultaneously sets the reference 45 in engagement with the reference 41 and reference 47 engages with the pinion 14a of the star wheel 14 for displaying the units of minutes.
- This correction lever 44 constitutes a mechanism for establishing a direct connection between the sliding pinion 37 and the star wheel 14 for displaying the units of minutes.
- a reference 48, engaged with the drive wheel 5 integral with the road, is also engaged in the time setting position of the winding and time setting mechanism, with the reference 45a, so that the unidirectional movement of rotation of the reference 41 is also transmitted to the train of the hour display mechanism, as well as to all the other display mechanisms which may still be associated.
- FIG. 1 shows that the timepiece described here also includes a disc for displaying the days of the week 49, a hand 50 for displaying the calendar of the month, as well as a disc 51 for displaying the phases from the moon.
- the drive of these display members is carried out from a pinion 52 (FIGS. 2 and 5) integral with the hour cam wheel 19 itself integral with the barrel wheel (not shown) of the timer train usual of all watches with mechanical display.
- the mechanical display mechanism object of the present invention must overcome the friction of the display organs, as well as the loss of energy caused by the arming of the springs intended to store sufficient energy to move the organs of display by instantaneous jumps and to overcome the force of the jumper springs for positioning the display discs. It is obvious that such a display mechanism can only function if the surface condition of the friction surfaces of the various members of this mechanism makes it possible to reduce friction as much as possible.
- the bearing on which the the inner circular surface of this ring will advantageously be in ruby.
