Definitions
- the present invention relates to a spirit level for checking the attitude of a surface, e.g. to confirm that a surface is horizontal.
- Spirit levels are used in many applications for checking the attitude of a surface. Examples include checking whether the upper surface of newly laid brickwork is horizontal and/or whether the facing of the brickwork is vertical. A further example that may be mentioned is in the laying of floors to check that the surface being laid is horizontal.
- a spirit level used for checking whether a newly laid floor is horizontal may be some 4ft (120 cm) in length, if not longer, since a shorter length may not give an accurate representation of the attitude of the surface.
- Spirit levels of similar length may also be used in the building industry for checking the attitude of surfaces of brickwork.
- a spirit level comprising an elongate main body portion with a flat sole and having at least one attitude indicator for checking the attitude of a surface, said body portion having at least one primary extension arm also having a flat sole and being pivotally mounted at one of the main body portion so as to be movable between a first position in which the primary extension arm lies against the main body portion and a second position in which the primary extension arm and the main body portion are co-linear with each other with their soles being flush.
- the spirit level in accordance with the invention has at least one extension arm which may be moved from a first ("folded") position in which it lies against the main body portion and a second ("extended") position in which it provides an extension for the main body portion.
- a spirit level is easy to manufacture and construct since the extension arm may be connected to the main body portion by means of a hinge.
- the invention provides an extendable spirit level which overcomes the disadvantages associated with the relatively complex construction of a telescopic sprit level such as disclosed in US-A-4 130 943. For preference, each of these arms folds against the same surface of the main body portion.
- the attitude indicator may be a bubble unit as conventionally employed in a spirit level.
- the or each primary extension arm may have pivotally mounted thereon a secondary extension arm to provide for further extension of the spirit level beyond that provided by the associated primary arm.
- Fig 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of sprit level in accordance with the invention shown in a folded (compact) configuration;
- Fig 2 illustrates the spirit level of Fig 1 being opened to full length
- Fig 3 illustrates the sprit level fully extended
- Fig 4 is a detail of the hinge between two foldable sections as those sections have been partially opened relative to each other;
- Fig 5 is similar to Fig 4 but showing the sections in a fully opened condition.
- FIG. 1 illustrates a spirit level 1 comprised of a main, elongate body portion 2 provided with a total of four extension arms 3-6 in the manner described more fully below.
- the main body portion may, for example, be 2ft (60cm) long and, in conventional manner, has relatively narrow upper and lower (as viewed in Fig 2) edges 7 and 8 and relatively wider (major) side faces 9 and 10.
- Lower edge 8 is flat and provides a sole to be applied against a surface whereof the attitude (horizontal or vertical) is to be checked.
- Incorporated in the upper edge 7 is a conventional spirit level bubble unit 11 for checking horizontal attitude of a surface and, again in conventional manner, there are two additional bubble units 12 and 13 for checking vertical attitude of a surface.
- Each of the four extension arms 3-6 has a length just less than half of that of the main body portion 2 and a cross-section identical therewith.
- the lower surfaces of arms 3-6 which provide soles similar to edge 8 of main body portion 2, are referenced in the drawings as 14-17.
- extension arms 3 and 4 provide for a two-fold extension at one end of main body portion 2 whereas a similar two-fold extension is provided at the opposite end of the body portion 2 by means of the arms 5 and 6.
- extension arms 3 and 4 will firstly be described and then similarities with arms 5 and 6 discussed.
- Arm 3 is pivotally mounted on the main body portion 2 by means of a hinge 18 and is pivotally connected to arm 4 by a hinge 19.
- the hinge 18 allows arm 3 to be pivotally moved through 180° between a first position in which it lies against the face 10 of main body section 2 and a second position in which it is colinear therewith so that the soles 8 and 14 are flush.
- Hinge 19 allows arm 4 to be pivotally moved through 180° relative to arm 3 between a first position in which it is folded against arm 3 and a second position in which it is colinear therewith. It will be appreciated from the drawings that pivotal movement of arm 3 about hinge 18 is of opposite hand to pivotal movement about hinge 19.
- the former may be folded against surface 10 of main body portion 2 for which purpose it is connected thereto by a hinge 20.
- hinges 18 and 20 function in the same way but in opposite senses.
- Extension arm 6 is pivotally mounted on the extension arm 5 by means of hinge 21 which functions in a similar way to hinge 18 (but in an opposite sense).
- Fig 4 shows a detail of the region at which two of the aforementioned sections of the sprit level are pivotally connected together.
- Fig 4 references these sections as main body portion 2 and extension arm 3 which are pivotally mounted by means of hinge 19.
- one of the sections in this case extension arm 3 has a bulbous tongue 22 provided on its end face which is such as to engage firmly but releasably in a groove 23 provided in adjacent end face of main body portion 2 when the main body portion 2 and extension arm 3 are co-linear (see Fig 5).
- magnets 24 are provided to assist in maintaining the sections in folded relationship.
- the sections 14 and 15 are provided with magnets 24 which (when the two sections are folded together) attract each other to inhibit unwanted opening.
- the reverse side of section 14 is provided with a further magnet (not shown) which cooperates with a magnet (not shown) on the reverse side of main body portion 2.
- the illustrated spirit level can be employed at a variety of lengths.
- the sprit level can be used in the configuration illustrated in Fig 1 so that the level has a length of 2ft.
- the level can be used with a length of 3 ft by pivotally opening extension arm 3 about hinge 18 until it is co-linear with main body portion 2 (but with extension arm 4 still being in face to face relationship with extension arm 3), the soles of extension arms 3 and 4 being flush with each other.
- extension arm 4 may be opened about hinge 19 so as to co-linear with extension arm 3.
- extension arm 4 may remain folded against extension arm 3 but extension arm 5 opened about hinge 20.
- a length of approximately 5ft is achieved by having both of extension arms 3 and 5 co-linear with main body portion 2 and also one (but not both) of extension arms 4 and 6 similarly co-linear.
- a length of 6ft is obtained with all extension arms 3-6 opened so as to be co- linear with main body portion 2, i.e. the configuration illustrated in Fig 3.
- main body portion 2 may be longer or shorter than the 2 ft (60 cm) described.
- there may be a different number of extension arms e.g. only the extension pieces 3 and 5 or, say, 3 and 4.
- Other combinations would be possible, e.g. extension arms 3, 4 and 5 but not 6.
- different sets of extension arms could be provided on opposite sides of the main body portion 2.
- the extension arms 5 and 6 could be provided to fold against major face 10 but with extension arms 3 and 4 being foldable against major surface 11.
