Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a method according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • Electronic documents are stored, for example, on a server system and made available for retrieval by the client system.
  • the documents are usually retrieved via an electronic network, the network structure being used to verify and, if necessary, grant access to the server system legitimation.
  • this check can be carried out very superficially, or even general access can be released without a special identification check. This condition is often the case with the general availability of electronic documents made available on the Internet, where access can generally and should be anonymous.
  • page counters are known, for example, for recording the number of accesses to such electronic documents. These are programs which are activated when the relevant electronic document is requested on the server system and, among other things, store a counter value which is increased by one unit each time it is accessed. The results of the count value are often integrated in the document to be transmitted with the current value and displayed on the client system.
  • Such page counters provide both the user of the client system and the author or distributor of the electronic document with information about the frequency with which the electronic document in question is called up. Traditionally, this information is provided and used on the server system for statistical evaluations.
  • this information must be transmitted to the server system using separate means. For example, this is also done electronically via a postal system that allows information to be sent to a specific location. Although sender information is forwarded, this usually does not allow reliable identification of the sender. In particular, this type of communication requires a reaction by the client system, and there is no specific call option by the server system, since this only communicates via the electronic document that is available in an identical manner to all client systems.
  • Competitions Every participant in a competition must be identified in the event of a win. This is usually done either by means of a participation certificate, in which it is assumed that the owner was also the real competitor and is therefore entitled to win, or the identification details of each participant must already be communicated to the competition provider when participating in the competition, for example on a corresponding participation form , Such competitions are carried out in the conventional way using paper and mail, or also electronically via the Internet with electronic mail.
  • the object of the present invention was to provide a method which, using the existing facilities for the provision and transmission of electronic documents, enables a specific identification of a specific client system which triggers a defined event.
  • the server can tell the calling client System that sets the counter directly to a defined value, transmit a corresponding message, in particular by transmitting the information of a separate electronic document created for this. Since the server system evaluates the request from the client system, which, for example, calls up the document with the integrated page counter and also operates this page counter itself, it can also redirect the request to such an alternative document.
  • This document can now contain identification features with which the client system can identify itself with conventional transmission devices, for example electronic mail, in the server system.
  • the client system that triggers the event is therefore the only client system to receive this information, while the following client systems in turn receive the original document or an alternative document. This makes it possible, for example, to participate in competitions anonymously and only to announce the identity in the event of a win or not.
  • the server system can preferably define a time window within which a response from the client system must be received, otherwise the profit is considered not to have been realized. This ensures that in the meantime another client system cannot obtain the information from this alternative electronic document without authorization and in the event of a competition identifies itself as a winner without authorization.
  • This procedure can advantageously increase the attractiveness of such a competition, since participation can take place anonymously.
  • such a competition can also be used as an advertising platform, since there is an incentive to call up the relevant electronic document several times in order to take advantage of the chance of winning.
  • the use of the page counter further increases the attractiveness of such a competition, since the participant is able to estimate his chances of winning to a certain extent. If the counter value increases only very slightly when the relevant document is called up several times, this is an indication that the competition does not currently have many participants. For example, by specifying the target value of the counter as a winning event on the electronic document, the presumed time lapse until this target value is reached.

When the document 1 is currently being accessed, the current status of the counter is shown on the counter display 3, so after repeated access to this document, the user can get an idea of the increase in access and thus also of the chance of possibly increasing the price. to be able to win. Since such accesses can be carried out very quickly in succession and in large numbers in a network, in particular the Internet, with the large number of connected client systems C, the increase in the counter can take place very quickly or else very slowly.
  • Participation in such a competition via the counter or Document 1 can be made anonymously, ie no identification data has to be given; simply requesting the corresponding electronic document is sufficient for participation. This increases the attractiveness of such a competition and also has a large advertising impact, since in addition to the price and the profit, an advertising message can also be transmitted with the document. Participants in the competition will also look at document 1 with increasing frequency the closer the counter value 4 approaches the target value.
  • the winner can also be notified immediately by immediately submitting the alternative document. Abstract
