Definitions

  • the present invention generally relates to the field of rolled sheet materials, and has to do particularly with a shielding device for protecting the upper, outer edges of such a roll during transportation.
  • the word “coil” will be used to designate a cylindrical bundle of sheet material. Such material is typically manufactured in the shape of an elongated rectangle, and may be rolled up over its length to form a thick-walled cylinder of overlapping layers or convolutions. When in the coiled form, the sheet steel is more manageable during transportation and handling.
  • a coil of sheet material is regarded as having an "exterior surface” (typically defining a circular cylinder), a “core” which is a hollow cylindrical passage at the centre of the roll, an “interior surface” which is the curved surface surrounding and defining the core, and “first and second ends” , referring to the two flat, parallel end surfaces of the coil where the side edges of the sheet can be seen.
  • first and second edges will refer to rolled material in close proximity to the interior surface and the first and second ends respectively.
  • the coil has an "axis" defined as a hypothetical line through the centre of the core, about which the rolled material was wound.
  • the "height" of the roll will refer to the distance between its first and second ends, the "interior diameter” will be the diameter of the core, and the “outside diameter” will be the diameter of the exterior surface.
  • Large heavy coils of sheet material are often transported on vehicles from one place to another. These coils are often bound with strapping which passes through the core, about the ends and over the exterior surface, in order to retain the coil integrity during handling. When the coils are loaded for transport, it is common to lay them on their exterior surface with the axis horizontal. The curvature of the exterior surface facilitates movement of the coils on the loading deck. Further, when the coils are lying on their exterior surface, loading cranes can insert a hook or bar into the hollow core to pick up the coils.
  • the coils are located on the deck of a vehicle, stops are wedged under the exterior surface to prevent them from rolling. Finally the coils may be fastened down with chains, or the like, that pass through the core and are secured to the deck at each end of the coil. The number of chains used to fasten the coil in place will depend upon the weight of the coil but it is common to have three or more chains that are secured forward, rearward and in line with the axis of the coil.
  • coils may be shaken and jostled.

  • frictional abrasion between the coils and the chains can cause gouging, bending and deformation due to chain tension and other damage that affects one or more layers of the coiled material from the interior surface outward.

  • the reason for the greater width of the collar portion 42 is to allow a chain or the like 44 to be looped over the coil 38 and tied down angularly at either end (as indicated by the arrow heads 46 in Figure 3), without the risk that the collar portion 12 would slip out from under the chain 44.
