Abstract

The optical control element has at least two areas (10, 20) consisting of a crystal, having different refractive indexes due to different polarization directions, and contacting each other at the interface (15), and is uniform in composition over the entire two areas (10, 20) including the interface (15). A polarization direction is controlled by applying an electric field having such an electric field component that directs vector V toward a positive electric field, vector V satisfying vector V = vector Cb vector Ca, where Cb is direction vector in a polarization direction before controlling, and Ca is direction vector in a polarization direction after controlling.
