Abstract

A method of applying a phosphate conversion coating to a zinc or zinc alloy surface comprises contacting the surface with an acidic solution comprising phosphate ions, nitrate ions or nitrite ions and one or both of a molybdenum or vanadium compound. The resulting conversion coating is substantially black, coherent and adhesive to the substrate and contains zinc, iron, one or both of molybdenum, and vanadium, and, when applied to a zinc alloy surface, the alloying element(s).
