Abstract

A handheld marking unit is shown with which one can mark cables with their identity directly when reading the identity from a cable list. The marking unit comprises a through channel (17) for the cable. Which can be opened and has a device (4, 9, 10) for arresting the cable ; a keyboard (13) for typing a marking identity ; a display (14) for displaying the identity ; and a marking unit (15) fixed in the channel (17) for marking directly on the cable surface the identity shown in the display.

Description

Handheld marking device
Technichal field
This invention relates to a handheld marking device for cables and similar elongated objects.
Brief description of prior art
All electric installations in the industry and on machinery demand a distinct and carefully made marking on all the cabling and at the connections of the cables.
The basis for the marking of a cable is the so-called cable list made by the designer. At the worksite, the electrician begins his work by reading the cable list and then rolls out the specific cable to be used. Before the electrician cuts off the cable from the cable roll, he marks with an ink pen both ends of the cable with the number from the cable list. When all cables are marked and laid on a cable rack or the like, the cables shall be connected in a cable cabinet or to a switch or to apparatuses such as motors or the like. Then, the final marking is applied, which consists of printed labels or signs. The marking should be clearly visible where the cables enter the apparatus or cabinet. The labels/signs are often ordered in advance from the cable list and specially delivered for the specific installation.
At present, there are also several marking methods where labels or separate digits/letters are applied to the cable either by being thread onto the cable in advance or by being attached with fastening strips. This is a considerable working moment in the work of the electrician and there is always a risk that these labels or markings will be on the wrong cable or falls off due to damage.
Object of invention and brief description of the invention
It is an object of the invention to provide for a quicker and more flexible cable marking and at the same time reduce the risk of erroneous marking. This is fulfilled with a through channel (17) for the cable which can be opened and has a device (4,9,10) for arresting the cable; a keyboard (13) for inserting a marking identity; a display (14) for displaying the identity; a marking unit (15) fixed in the channel (17) for marking directly on the cable surface the identity shown in the display; and a feeding device (9,10,12) arranged for feeding the cable along the channel during the marking operation.
Brief description of the drawings, which show an example of the invention.
Figure 1 shows in a perspective view a handheld cable-marking unit, which can be parted.
Figure 2 shows in a side view the interior of one part of the unit shown in figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view seen as indicated by the arrows 3-3 in figure 2.
Figure 4 shows the other part of the unit shown in figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view seen as indicated by the arrows 5-5 in figure 4.
Description in more detail of the illustrated and preferred example of the invention
The marking device shown in the drawings is a handheld unit that has a casing in three parts, namely a part 1 that comprises the mechanichal parts, a part 2 that comprises the electronic parts, and a bottom part that comprises the rechargable battery.
The casing part 1 has a jaw 4 that is linearly guided on the casing and is movable as indicated by the arrows in figure 3. The jaw 4 has a number of freely rotatable rolls or wheels 9 and the casing has two rolls or wheels 10 that are coupled to an electric motor 12 by means of a transmission 11 shown as a belt drive.
The jaw is controlled by a the key 5,which, by means of a rod 6 and a lever 7 opens the jaw, that is, moves it to the right in figure 2 so as to permit for the insertion of a cable or another elongated object between the jaw and the casing. A spring 8 is coupled to provide a return force on the jaw so that the inserted cable will be clamped between the motor driven rolls 10 and the free-running rolls 9. The casing part 1 and the jaw form a through channel 17 for the cable and the channel can be opened. There is thus a device for arresting the cable in the channel and the motor can drive the cable through the channel.
The casing part 2 has a keyboard with keys 13, a display 14, and a marking unit for the cable in the form of a writing head. With the keyboard, one can print a cable identity directly from the cable list and the thus programmed cable identity can be directly read on the display 14. Then, one inserts the cable in the cable channel and marks the cable directly on its surface by pressing the print key 16. Suitably, the cable should be marked on a plurality of places at even distances so that 1-2 meters of the cable ends are marked. The marking unit can for example be an ink-jet printer that prints on the surface without contacting the surface, but it can also be a mechanichal marker. The marking unit can alternatively print a label or mark it in another way and directly attach the label to the cable surface.
Then, when the cable is to be coupled to a cabinet or to an apparatus, its end is stripped and the cable is fixed with one of the earlier made markings at the right place relative to the point of connection. If no one of the earlier made markings fit, another identical marking can easily be made by means of the marking unit.
