Abstract

Novel β-lactam compounds represented by the following general formula [1]: [1] wherein R1 represents lower alkyl, etc.; R2 represents H or lower alkyl; X represents O, S or NH; m and n are each from 0 to 5, provided that n+m is from 1 to 5; Y1 represents halogeno, etc.; and Y2 represents H, optionally substituted lower alkyl, etc.; salts thereof or nontoxic esters of the same. These compounds exhibit an excellent antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria, in particular, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus aureus.
