Definitions
- the present invention relates to the field of sterile or sterilized packaging, and more particularly to packaging intended for transporting sterilized products or intended to be sterilized.
- the packaging is sealed individually or in combination with contamination by microorganisms, bacteria and / or a biologically active material, capable of coming into contact with the packaging during its handling, while remaining permeable to a sterilization or decontamination gas, for example of the ethylene oxide type or decontaminating or sterilizing fluid at high temperature, for example steam up to 130 ° C, more generally 120 ° to 127 ° C and preferably between 121 ° and 123 ° C.
- a sterilization or decontamination gas for example of the ethylene oxide type or decontaminating or sterilizing fluid at high temperature, for example steam up to 130 ° C, more generally 120 ° to 127 ° C and preferably between 121 ° and 123 ° C.
- plastic material is meant any material chosen from families of polymers such as styrenics, acrylics, polysulfones, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyolefins, etc., including copolymers, combinations and alloys of polymers.
- the "plastic material” is for example polystyrene, polyethylene or polypropylene.
- Mention will also be made of a “screen against electronic irradiation”, which must be understood to include a material capable of reflecting and / or absorbing partially or entirely .the kinetic energy of the electrons coming from a beam and consequently of slowing down, or even preventing the latter from crossing said material.
- screen vis-à-vis light radiation should be understood as defining a material making it possible to reflect, attenuate or prevent light radiation, for example pulsed or ultraviolet, from passing through it.
- transparent and opaque are to be considered vis-à-vis electronic irradiation on the one hand and vis-à-vis light radiation on the other hand.
- a material is transparent if it is liable to be crossed by light radiation or by electrons when it is subjected to electronic irradiation.
- a material is therefore opaque to electronic irradiation or light radiation if it allows to reflect, attenuate and / or absorb the kinetic energy of the electrons or if it prevents light radiation from to cross.
- the opacity and / or transparency of a material are most often determined from parameters such as, thickness, density, coefficient of reflection or attenuation.
- packages for sterile products or intended to be sterilized by a gas of the ethylene oxide type comprising a plastic box and a cover made of selectively sealed material, making it possible to seal said box using a sealed sealing area.
- Certain packages, such as those used to transport syringes before they are filled with an active product or drug, are currently transported in plastic cases, for example polystyrene, covered with a cover sheet made of a selectively waterproof material.
- the latter is for example a sheet based on filaments of HDPE (high density polyethylene) or other polymer, linked in particular by means of heat and pressure.
- HDPE high density polyethylene
- Tyvek ® brand One such product is eg marketed under the Tyvek ® brand.
- Products intended to be sterilized are thus placed inside a box, which is then sealed by means of the selectively sealed sheet.
- a sterilizing fluid then enters the box through the sheet of selectively sealed material.
- the box containing the sterilized products is then placed in a protective bag to transport it.
- Another method consists in first introducing the box into the bag provided with a selectively sealed zone and then carrying out sterilization.
- a box or packaging may contain syringes intended to be filled with a drug in a sterile room or in a controlled environment. Before filling said syringes, it is necessary to open the protective bag and decontaminate the possibly contaminated packaging, before its introduction for example in a sterile room.
- Such decontamination can be obtained using an electron beam developing sufficient energy to present, after crossing the cover sheet (selectively sealed material), an irradiation dose of 25 Gy. This makes it possible to consider that the selectively sealed material has been decontaminated throughout its thickness, and in particular in the sealed area at the interface of the box and said selectively sealed material.
- decontamination using light radiation is also not indicated since said light radiation is not able to pass through the sheet of selectively impermeable material when it is opaque to light, which is generally the case, and therefore to reach a localized area at the interface of the cover and the box.
- This area containing, for example, a layer of glue may have irregularities and it is therefore essential to reach these possibly contaminated irregularities, with a decontamination means.
- sterilization using a sterilizing or decontaminating fluid at high temperature causes stresses in the materials present, in l 'occurrence the material called TYVEK ® and that of the box; which generates taking into account the relatively large dimensions of boxes and packaging, tensions on the connecting means between said sheet of selectively sealed material and the peripheral edge of the box. These tensions can cause deformations of the box and / or separation between the sheet of selectively sealed material and said box.
- gas sterilization agents are, for example, vapors or plasmas of hydrogen peroxide, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, peracetic acid, chlorine dioxide, ozone, etc.
- the disadvantages of these sterilization agents are linked to the difficulty of controlling said vapors or plasmas, the toxic and aggressive characteristics of certain agents and / or residues, and their incompatibility with certain materials.
- the object of the present invention is to provide packaging for products intended to be sterilized, by any type of sterilization, and in particular sterilization with ethylene oxide (ETO) or using a sterilizing fluid. at high temperature, said packaging also being capable of being decontaminated externally by means of various types of decontamination, and in particular by means of an electron beam, pulsed light or ultraviolet radiation.
- ETO ethylene oxide
- Another object of the present invention is to provide packaging for products intended to be sterilized, which is capable of indicating what type of sterilization and decontamination it has undergone.
- An additional object of the present invention is to provide a package sealingly sealing a box containing products intended to be sterilized using a sterilization fluid of the vapor or ethylene oxide type, by reducing the time as best as possible. necessary for such a sterilization operation.
- the objects of the present invention are achieved using a packaging for sterile products or intended to be sterilized comprising a plastic box and a lid fixed on the box so as to seal the latter in a selectively sealed manner.
- the cover comprises
- cover sheet of plastic material transparent for electronic irradiation and for light radiation
- At least one sheet of a selectively waterproof material integral with said cover sheet and closing the window;
- an opaque screen for at least one electronic irradiation passing through the cover sheet or the selectively waterproof material said screen extending inside the packaging, in the vicinity of the cover sheet, so as to allow penetration a sterilization gas, for example ethylene oxide or water vapor, through the selectively sealed material.
- a sterilization gas for example ethylene oxide or water vapor
- the cover includes usage indicators making it possible to identify and indicate the nature of the sterilization and decontamination to which it has been subjected.
- the selectively impermeable material has a peripheral connection zone on which is discreetly or continuously distributed, an adhesive compatible with sterilization at high temperature and a central zone remaining devoid of glue.
- the packaging according to the invention has the advantage that it can be used with several sterilization and decontamination processes.
- the packaging can be used as is or with predefined arrangements. It is therefore not necessary to design a particular product compatible with a sterilization method and a particular decontamination used.
- Other characteristics and advantages will also emerge from the detailed description given below, given by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
- FIG. 1 shows a partially cut perspective view of an example of packaging according to the invention
- Figure 2 shows the embodiment of Figure 1 in a section along the direction ll-ll of Figure 1;
- FIG. 3 shows a top view of the embodiment of Figure 1; - Figure 4 shows another embodiment of the packaging according to the invention.
- the packaging 2 comprises a box 4 (partially cut out in FIG. 1) delimiting an internal volume 6, intended to contain a load to be sterilized.
- This load is for example made up of syringes 8.
- the box 4 has internally for this purpose a first peripheral edge 10 extending towards the outside of the box 4 and intended to provide support for a support 12 for the syringes 8.
- This support 12 is for example constituted by a plate on which are formed chimneys or orifices, crossed by the syringes 8.
- the box 4 also has an upper peripheral edge 1 substantially horizontal and extending towards the outside of said box 4
- the latter is for example made of a plastic material of the polystyrene or other polymer type.
- the material constituting the 4 " box can be opaque, transparent or semi-transparent with respect to light radiation, for example visible or of the ultraviolet type.
- the packaging 2 also includes a cover 16 fixed on the box 4 so as to seal the latter by a sealed sealing zone.
- the cover 16 is for example glued with its peripheral edge 16a to the upper peripheral edge 14 of the box 4.
- a layer of adhesive 18 makes it possible to produce the interface between the peripheral edge 16a and the upper peripheral edge 14.
- the layer of adhesive for example of the "hot melt” type 18 is chosen from adhesives resistant to high temperatures, for example of the order of 121 ° C. corresponding to steam sterilization.
- the cover 16 comprises a cover sheet 20 of plastic material making it possible to seal the box 4.
- the sheet of cover 20 is transparent for electronic irradiation as well as for light radiation, for example ultraviolet. The opacity / density / thickness characteristics of the cover sheet 20 are therefore chosen accordingly.
- the cover sheet 20 has at least one window 22, obtained for example by any known means, in particular by cutting.
- the cover sheet 20 shown in the figures has two windows 22.
- Each window 22 has for example a longitudinal shape and extends in the vicinity of the upper peripheral edges 14 of the box 4
- the cover 16 also comprises at least one sheet 24 of a selectively waterproof material secured to the cover sheet 16 and closing each of the windows 22.
- the selectively sealed material 24 is for example a material based on HDPE (high density polyethylene) filaments or other polymers, bonded inter alia by means of heat and pressure.
- the filaments are agglomerated so as to form a microporous structure, impermeable in particular to microorganisms or other bacteria.
- the selectively impervious material 24 comprises TYVEK ®.
- the sheet 24 of selectively impervious material is, with its periphery 24a, bonded to or preferably under the cover sheet 20.
- the selectively impermeable material can also consist of natural fibers such as vegetable fibers, for example cellulose, compatible with a high temperature sterilization.
- the cover 16 is also associated with an opaque screen 26 for at least one electronic irradiation passing through the cover sheet 20.
- This screen 26 extends inside the package 2 in the vicinity of the cover sheet 20 so to allow the penetration of a sterilization gas, for example ethylene oxide (ETO) or steam, through the selectively sealed material.
- a sterilization gas for example ethylene oxide (ETO) or steam
- the screen 26 comprises for example a flexible metal sheet.
- the screen 26 can thus be made of a flexible aluminum sheet.
- the screen 26 is fixed under the cover sheet 20 along a fixing line 28, fixing points or a fixing zone, near for example the center of said cover sheet 20.
- a fixing line 28 Any known fixing or connecting means can be envisaged to produce this fixing line 28.
- the latter can be obtained for example by gluing, welding or embossing.
- the screen 26 comprises for example an assembly of two sheets of selectively sealed material. Such an assembly can also be fixed on the cover sheet 20 along the fixing line 28.
- the position of the peripheral edge 10 as well as the dimensions of the support 12 are chosen so that the screen 26, which rests on both sides and on the other side of the fixing line 28 on said support 12, extends close to and under the cover sheet 20. This thus minimizes the gap between the screen 26 and the cover sheet 20, while retaining a passage for a sterilization gas.
- FIG. 4 shows the screen 126, for example consisting of an assembly of two sheets of selectively sealed material.
- the screen 126 extends under the cover sheet 20.
- the screen 126 also has dimensions allowing its peripheral part 126a to be sandwiched between the cover sheet 20 and the peripheral edge upper 14 of the box 4.
- the sealing of the box 4 by the cover sheet 20 is obtained by the layer of glue 18 providing the interface between said cover sheet 20 and said upper peripheral edge 14, and the screen 126 can be integral or not with the cover sheet 20 and / or with the upper peripheral edge 14.
- the screen 126 is waterproof.
- the screen 126 also has orifices in fluid communication with at least one window 22.
- the cover 16 of the package 2 according to the invention also includes usage indicators 30 making it possible to identify and indicate the nature of sterilization and decontamination to which said package 2 has been subjected.
- the use indicators 30, known as such are for example indicators which change their color as a function of the treatment undergone.
- the packaging manipulator 2 therefore constantly knows what type of sterilization the syringes 8 have been subjected to, and what type of decontamination the packaging 2 has been subjected to.
- the cover sheet 20 is transparent vis-à-vis electronic radiation and vis-à-vis light radiation.
- the transparency of the cover sheet 20 with respect to electronic irradiation and with respect to light radiation of the pulsed light or ultraviolet radiation type makes it possible to decontaminate an area situated at the interface between said cover sheet 20 and the upper peripheral edge 14 Irregularities in the glue layer 18, possibly contaminated, can thus be decontaminated by an electron beam or light radiation as mentioned above.
- the box 4 is for example made with a plastic material transparent to light radiation.
- the transparency with respect to visible light radiation makes it possible to identify and continuously control during a possible decontamination, the content of the package 2.
- the material constituting the box 4 has for example a density-thickness pair such that '' it stops the electrons coming from an electron beam of irradiation. This makes it possible to avoid any alteration of the products or of the charge contained in the package 2, in this case the syringes 8, as well as the generation of ozone with the air.
- the selectively sealed material preferably has a peripheral connection zone 24a on which is continuously distributed, an adhesive compatible with high temperature sterilization, and a central zone 24b remaining devoid of adhesive.
- the absence of glue in this central zone 24b facilitates and accelerates the passage of a sterilization gas of the ETO type or water vapor through the selectively sealed material 24. The times necessary for the sterilization of a package 2 can thus be reduced.
- the screen 126 extends under each window 22 so as to produce a zone permeable to a sterilization gas of the ETO type or water vapor. This gas thus passes through three layers of a selectively impermeable material. Such a thickness is opaque on the one hand with respect to light radiation, and on the other hand with respect to certain electronic irradiations.
- An irradiation dose for example of 25 kGy after the passage through the selectively sealed material closing the window 22, can thus be absorbed by the screen 126. This avoids penetration of electrons into the interior volume 6 and consequently the creation ozone or impaired syringes 8.
- Such a dose of electronic irradiation used for decontamination is also absorbed by the screen 26 (cf. FIGS.
- the density and / thickness pair of the cover sheet 20 is also chosen to make said cover sheet 20 transparent with respect to electronic irradiation and in particular its peripheral part 20a fixed or glued to the upper peripheral edge 14.
- a light radiation, for example ultraviolet can thus decontaminate the connection interface between said cover sheet 20 and the upper peripheral edge 14.
- the screen 26 (cf. FIG. 2) has on each side of the fixing line 28, parts which are not intimately linked to the cover sheet 20 and in particular to the selectively sealed material, so as not to alter the passage of a sterilization gas of the ETO or vapor type. This is particularly advantageous when the screen 26 is impermeable to a sterilization gas as is the case for example for an aluminum foil.
- the screen 26 may not be connected at all to the cover sheet and simply rest on the products contained in the packaging, on a part contained in the packaging or on supports that the latter includes internally.
