- Studies on the technique of the wedge-like connections found an application in the connections between fixed prostheses and removable prostheses in the so-called "conical crowns"; furthermore, some implant systems take advantage of the wedge-like connection concept in the connection implant-stump.
- the wedge-like connection approach is poorly employed in industrial manufacturing of prostheses, since very narrow manufacturing mechanical tolerances are required.
- the patent application for industrial invention CA98A00002 discloses fixing means for dental prostheses comprising mutual coupling surfaces converging in occlusal direction, the fixing means comprising at least a portion of elastically deformable material arranged so as to push parts of said surfaces each against the other.
- the connection disclosed in the above mentioned patent application consists of two portions: a first portion having at least two mutually opposite surfaces, which are mutually diverging with respect to an axis defining the coupling direction with the surfaces of a second portion.
- the surfaces of the second portion are converging with respect to said axis, and match the above mentioned surfaces of the first portion.
- One of the above mentioned surfaces is made of elastically deformable material.
- connection may comprise a male part and a female part between which an element of elastically deformable material is arranged, said element being suitable for firmly keeping the male part and the female part mutually in contact.
- Such friction connection is based on the principle of inclined surfaces known from the technique of the wedge-like connections, but it differs from said principle in that the connecting friction is developed due to the elastic element that, when arranged in a region between the coupling surfaces, produces friction between regions of the coupling surfaces opposite to said elastic element.
- connection disclosed in CA98A00002 allows assembling operations significantly simpler than the operations required by the connections of the prior art, said connection shows a drawback due to the possible damage of the elastic element .
- the deformable element is provided with a prismatic shape and is housed into a seat suitable for shapingly receiving said element; thus, however, due to dimension reasons, the element can undergo only slight deformations, and therefore the insertion of the male part into the female part of the connection is poorly progressive.
- the deformable elements made of plastic material are expensive since their manufacturing requires special embedded moulding devices, such as properly shaped dies.
- the deformable elements have to be provided with a shape suitable for coupling with the seats inside which they have to be inserted, which requires dimensional tolerances belonging to a quite narrow range.
- the deformable elements made of plastic material are constituted of a substantially isotropic material, they exert the pressure due to the elastic memory in any direction, not only in the direction useful for blocking the connection with which they are associated. Therefore, for properly performing their function of friction promoting elements, such deformable elements have to be subjected to significant mechanical stresses, which cause an early yield of the deformable elements.
- An object of the present invention is to improve the connections for implant prostheses.
- a further object of the invention is to provide elastically deformable elements, capable of being associated with connections for dental prostheses on implants, said elements being less subjected to yield than the known elastically deformable elements .
- a further object of the invention is to obtain elastically deformable elements suitable for being associated with connections for dental prostheses on implants that are capable of transmitting to the male part and to the female part of the above mentioned connections a stronger and more progressive elastic force than the known elastically deformable elements having the same dimensions.
- a still further object of the invention is to obtain elastically deformable elements which are particularly cost- effective.
- a pillar shaped connection for dental prostheses comprising a male part suitable for interacting with a female part along coupling surfaces, an elastic element which can be interposed between said male part and said female part, characterized in that said elastic element comprises anisotropic elastic means projecting from a seat of said male part for interacting with said female part.
- the anisotropic elastic means comprises friction generating means partially extending from said seat, and spring means, preferably coil spring means, arranged for pressing said friction generating means into contact with at least one portion of the above mentioned female part.
- the friction generating means comprises first pressing means and second pressing means, between which said spring means is arranged.
- the spring means can be made of metal, so as to have higher yield strength.
- said surfaces comprise sections of conical surfaces.
- said surfaces comprise sections of cylindrical surfaces.
- said surfaces comprise sections of prismatic surface. Owing to the invention, it is possible to obtain pillar shaped connections for implants, which are particularly simple and cost-effective.
- the deformable elements associated with the connections according to the invention are particularly effective, since they exert an elastic stress along a pre- established action line and therefore exert a pressure acting on the friction surfaces between the female part and the male part of the connection with which they are associated. Owing to the invention, it is also possible to obtain connections for implant prostheses which are not very bulky and which are provided with a reliable and efficient blocking device.

- the coil spring means associable with the connections according to the invention can be easily manufactured, particularly if compared with lamina elastic elements .
- the pre-tensioning of the coil spring means may be easily adjusted.

- a further prosthetic structure 11 is associated with the female connection 3.
- a seat 5 is obtained, the seat 5 being suitable for housing an elastic element 6 comprising pressing means 8 associated with coil spring means 9.
- the female connection 3 is provided with a recess 7 suitable for housing a portion 8a of the pressing means 8, said portion 8a extending outside of the seat 5, after the above mentioned female connection 3 has been coupled with the respective male connection 1.
- the seat 5 is provided with an opening 12 through which the pressing means 8 and the coil spring means 9 are introduced into the seat 5.
- the seat 5 further comprises, at the opening 12, a threaded end 5a arranged for receiving a screw 10 filling the opening 12, so as to close the seat 5, after the elastic element 6 has been introduced therein.
- the screw 10 works as an adjusting device for adjusting the pressure that the deformable element 6 exerts on the female connection 3, since by screwing and unscrewing said screw 10 it is possible to control the pre- tensioning of the coil spring means 9.
- the seat 5 is further provided, in the region 5b opposite to the region of the threaded end 5a, with stop means 5c, comprising for example a throttling or a narrowing part, suitable for limiting the stroke of the pressing means 8 and for allowing the sole portion 8a from coming out of the seat 5.

- the portion 8a of the pressing means 8 projects out of the seat 5.

- the male connection la and the female connection 3a are mutually coupled along respective matching parts of cylindrical surface Z and W.
- An elastic element 6 is associated with the male connection la, the elastic element 6 being absolutely similar to the elastic element described with reference to Figures 1 and 2. As previously described, in an initial rest position, a portion 8a of the pressing means 8 projects out of the seat 5.
- a male connection 1 is shown provided with an elastic element 6 comprising coil spring means 9 associated with pressing means 8 and with further pressing means 15.
- the male connection 1 comprises a seat 5, and a nut 13 can be associated with the threaded end 5a of the seat 5.
- the nut 13 can be screwed on the threaded end 5a so as to be arranged at the opening 12.
- the nut 13 is provided, in the central region thereof, with a hole 14 through which a portion 15a of the further pressing means 15 protrudes from the seat 5, so as to interact with the female part 3.
- the elastic element 6 is assembled as described below. First of all, the pressing means 8, the coil spring means 9 and the further pressing means 15 are introduced in sequence into the seat 5. Then, the nut 13 is screwed on the threaded end 5a so as to close the opening 12 and to locate the pressing means 8, the coil spring means 9 and the further pressing means 15 inside the seat 5.
- one end 9a of the coil spring means 9 interacts with the pressing means 8, while a further end 9b, opposite to said one end 9a, interacts with the further pressing means 15.
- the pressing means 8 and the further pressing means 15 are therefore provided with ends, i.e. the end 8a and the further end 15a respectively, which, due to the pressure of the coil spring means 9, protrude out of opposite sections of the seat 5 for interacting with the female connection 3, thus increasing friction between the male connection 1 and the female connection 3 and optimising their mutual adhesion.
- the female connection 3 may be provided with a further recess 7a arranged for receiving the further portion 15a protruding from the seat 5 through the hole 14 of the nut 13.
- the recess 7 can advantageously extend along the whole circumference of the inner surface of the female connection 3. This enables the male connection 1 to be replaced without replacing or modifying the further prosthetic structure 11 with which the female part 3a is associated, if said male , connection 1 is damaged.
- the portion 8a of the pressing means 8 and the further portion 15a of the further pressing means 15, if present, may be received into the recess 7 even if, due to a different screwing of the new male connection 1, the angular positions of the pressing means 8 and of the further pressing means 15 are different from the positions of the pressing means 8, and of the further pressing means 15, associated with the old male connection 1 that was removed.
- a pillar shaped connection for dental prostheses, said connection comprising a male part 1, la suitable for interacting with a female part 3, 3a, shaped as a coping, along coupling surfaces X, Y, Z, W.
- the connection further comprises an elastic element 6 inserted into a seat 5 of said pillar shaped connection 1, la, said elastic element 6 having at least a portion 8a protruding from the seat 5 to interact with the female part 3, 3a, under the pressure of a coil spring 9 of the elastic element 6.
- the pillar shaped connection 1, la is provided with threaded stem means 2 arranged for being screwed onto a prosthetic structure 4.
- the pillar shaped connection 1, la may comprise, besides the protruding portion 8a, a further protruding portion 15a, said protruding portion 8a and said further protruding portion 15a being suitable for interacting with a circular recess 7 of the female part 3, 3a under the pressure of the coil spring 9 of the elastic element 6.
