Description
Method of leakproof sealing a lid to a container and device for leakproof sealing a lid to a container
Technical field
The present invention relates to a method of leakproof sealing a lid to a container, particularly plastic bucket, and to a device for leakproof sealing a lid to a container.
Background of the invention
There is known method of sealing plastic containers as described in US patent specification no. 4888935. In this method a container is closed with a dished foil lid made of heat conductive material, preferably metal. Previously prepared dished lid is placed over the top of the container with the dished portion of the lid extending downwardly into the plastic container. The periphery of the lid is in contact with the flange of the container. The lid is fused to the container by pressing a heating tool with tapered tip at elevated temperature. By applying temperature and pressure the inner edge of the container is melted and fused to the lid.
In other methods lids made of metal foil or plastic film of different kinds are used for sealing containers. In these methods the lids are also fused to the upper part of the container by pressing the lid with a punch at elevated temperature.
Summary of the invention The present invention discloses a method of leakproof sealing of container in which the container moves on a conveyor belt and is placed centrally under a sealing head. A plastic film for lids is supplied from a roll and is
clamped between two plates with circular holes. The holes define a portion of the film used for producing the lid.
The circular portion of the film is heated on a ring- shaped area close to a border of the circular portion of the film. Alternatively the whole circular portion of the film can be heated.
In the next step the film is stretched by means of a punch. The stretched film with the punch is then introduced into the opening of the container until the film touches the edge of the container. Then the film and the edge of the container are fused and subsequently the film is cut off outside the sealed container.
In another embodiment the film and the container are fused on internal surface of the container close to the edge of the opening.
The film used for sealing can be laminated with glue on a surface that is in contact with the container. Also the container's surface designed for fusing can be laminated with the glue, or both the film and the container can be laminated with the glue.
If it is required the sealed container can be additionally closed with a cap known in the art.
The present invention also discloses a device for leakproof sealing of containers. The device forms one unit with conveyor belt and is equipped with a frame, known control units and a feeder of rolled film. The main unit of the device is a sealing head that comprises a punch, a ring- shaped heater and a circumferential cutter. The sealing head is actuated by means of centrally placed vertical servo. A first holder of the ring-shaped heater and a second holder of the circumferential cutter are mounted to a piston rod of the centrally placed vertical servo. The holders are separated with springs. Two horizontally oriented plates, a
top plate and a bottom plate, with' circular holes are placed under the sealing head. Dimensions of the holes are big enough to let the punch, the ring-shaped heater and the circumferential cutter to be moved through the holes towards the container. The container is placed under the sealing head. The plates, designed to clamp the film, are mounted on at least two servos. The bottom plate is able to move in relation to the upper plate. The ring-shaped heater has two working surfaces vertically displaced against each other. An inner heating surface of the ring-shaped heater, which is displaced down against an outer surface, heats a ring-shaped area of the clamped film. The outer heating surface of the ring-shaped heater fuses the film with an edge of the container. Alternatively the sealing device can be equipped with additional heater mounted inside the punch or it can be equipped only with a heater that is mounted inside the punch.
The circumferential cutter is preferably a mechanical cutter but it can be also a thermal cutter.
By applying the method and the device according to the present invention the plastic containers, particularly buckets filed with liquid medium, can be leakproof sealed. The method according to the present invention can be used together with the known method of closing containers with the known cap. This ensures high quality of leakproof sealing and high durability that is necessary during transportation of the containers when they are stored one on another. Additionally applying the lid of dished shape results in removing significant volume of the air from the container. This is important in case of food or chemical products.

Detailed description of the preferred embodiment
A device according to the present invention is fixed with a conveyor belt 2 to a base 1. Said conveyor belt 2 delivers a container 3 filled mostly with a liquid content to said device. A film feeder 5 is fixed to a spatial frame 4. Also servos, sensors, time relays, marginal switches and control box are fixed to said spatial frame 4. The basic unit of said device is a sealing head 6 which work is synchronised with said conveyor belt 2 and with said film feeder 5. Said sealing head 6, which is mounted on a central vertical servo 8, comprises a punch 9 and a ring-shaped heater 10 fixed to a first holder 11. Said sealing head 6 also comprises a circumferential cutter 12 fixed to a second holder 14 and springs 13 that are mounted between said first holder 11 and
said second holder 14. Said ring-shaped heater 10 has two working surfaces 15 and 16 vertically displaced against each other. A lower surface 15 is for heating a film 7 on a ring- shaped area 17 of a circular area 18 of said film 7. Said heating allows stretching said film 7 and its permanent, deformation. An upper surface 16 is for fusing a peripheral part 19 of said circular area 18 of said film 7 to an edge 20 of said container 3. A lower part of said device comprises two horizontally oriented plates, a top plate 21 and a bottom plate 22. Said top plate 21 is fixed to casings 23 of piston rods 24 of servos 25 and said bottom plate 22 is movable and is fixed to said piston rods 24 of said servos 25. Between said plates 21, 22 said film 7 is moved and supplied by said film feeder 5. Said plates 21, 22 have holes 26, 27 which let said punch 9 and said ring-shaped heater 10, and said circumferential cutter 12 to be moved through said holes 26, 27 towards said container 3 located under said sealing head 6. Said punch 9 and said ring-shaped heater 10, and said circumferential cutter 12 move through said holes 26, 27 during a process of forming a dished lid 28, fusing said dished lid 28 to said edge 20 and cutting off said film 7 outside said container 3. Said circumferential cutter 12 has a serrate cutting edge.
In another embodiment of the present invention said sealing head 6 comprises said circumferential cutter 12 that has thermal cutting edge. Said circumferential cutter 12 with said thermal cutting edge cut off said film 7 outside said edge 20 of said container 3. Said sealing head 6 additionally can be equipped with a heater mounted inside said punch 9, or the only heater can be said heater inside said punch 9. When the only heater is said heater inside said punch 9 said dished lid 28 is fused with a weld 29 to an internal surface of said container 3 close to said edge 20.
During work of said device said conveyor belt moves said container 3 and positions it centrally, with help of known sensors, under said sealing head 6. Said bottom plate 22 moves up and clamps said film 7 between said bottom plate 22 and said top plate 21. Then said ring-shaped heater 10 is turned on and heats said ring-shaped area 17 of said circular area 18 of said film 7. In the next step said punch 9 moves down and stretches said film 7 on said heated ring-shaped area 17 and forms said dished lid 28. Plates 21, 22 with clamped film 7, ring-shaped heater 10 and moved forward punch 9 moves toward said container 3. Said peripheral part 19 of said circular area 18 of said film 7 is pressed against said edge 20 of said container 3 by means of said upper surface 16 of said ring-shaped heater 10. Said upper surface 16 fuses said peripheral part 19 to said edge 20. Said circumferential cutter 12 moves down and cuts off said film 7 outside said edge 20 of said container 3. Said sealing head 6 together with said bottom plate 22 and said top plate 21 moves up, said film feeder 5 moves said film 7 and said device is prepared for leakproof sealing of the next container 3.
Additionally after leakproof sealing of said container 3 with said dished lid 28 made of said film 7, said container 3 is additionally closed with a known cap 31.
