A method for converting HTML/XML to HDML/WML comprising the steps of: at the mobile unit, sending a request to a proxy server; at the proxy server, retrieving the requested HTML/XML document from the Web. retrieving a conversion specification, retrieving mobile unit device information, extracting needed data from the HTML/XML document, formatting the extracted data in HDML/WML, optimizing the HDML/WML data for transmission, and transmitting the HDML/WML data to the mobile unit for display.
2. The method of Claim 1 wherein said request contains information pertaining to the mobile device.
3. The method of Claim 1 wherein the proxy server retrieves the requested HTML/XML document from local cache.
4. A method for a Web server to convert HTML/XML to HDML/WML comprising the steps of: retrieving a requested HTML/XML document from the Web; parsing the HTML/XML code to generate key/value pairs; filtering the key/value pairs into the relevant subset; translating the key/value pairs into HDML/WML card/deck pairs; and tokenizing the HDML/WML card/deck pairs.

5. The method of Claim 4 wherein said request is sent by a wireless communications device and said request comprises: a Uniform Resource Locator; a key that uniquely identifies said wireless communications device; and a key that uniquely identifies the user profile of said wireless communications device.
6. The method of Claim 5 wherein the Web server retrieves said requested HTML/XML document from local cache.
7. The method of Claim 2 wherein the information pertaining to the mobile unit comprises information selected from the group consisting of: mobile unit model identifier, transmission frequency, reception frequency, interoperability standards, safety requirements, encryption specifications, mobile unit weight, display dimensions, keypad features, button and knob features, flip features, microphone and earpiece characteristics, antenna specifications, internal clock information, battery type, memory capabilities, browser type, application support, SMS capabilities, internal processor specifications, Over the Air Service Programming capabilities, and color display capabilities.
8. The method of Claim 7 further comprising the step of storing the information pertaining to the mobile unit in a database associated with the proxy server.
9. The method of Claim 2 wherein the information pertaining to the mobile device comprises information selected from the group consisting of: mobile unit model identifier, display dimensions, keypad features, and memory capabilities.
29
10. The method of Claim 9 further comprising the step of storing the information pertaining to the mobile unit in a database associated with the proxy server.
1 1. A method for converting HTML/XML to HDML/WML comprising the steps of: at the mobile unit, sending a request to a proxy server; at the proxy server, retrieving the requested HTML/XML document from the Web, retrieving a conversion specification, retrieving mobile unit device information, extracting needed data from the HTML/XML document, formatting the extracted data in HDML/WML, optimizing the HDML/WML data for transmission, and transmitting the HDML/WML data to the mobile unit for display, wherein said request contains information pertaining to mobile unit user preferences.
12. The method of Claim 1 1 wherein the information pertaining to mobile unit user preferences comprises information selected from the group consisting of: user name, user age, user sex, user marital status, user preferred airline and seating arrangements, user preferred fueling stations, credit card information, preferred restaurants and cuisine, and last recorded user location.
13. The method of Claim 12 further comprising the step of storing the information pertaining to the mobile unit user preferences in a database associated with the proxy server.
30
14. The method of Claim 2 wherein the request contains information pertaining to mobile unit user preferences.
15. The method of Claim 14 wherein the information pertaining to mobile unit user preferences comprises information selected from the group consisting of: user name, user age, user sex, user marital status, user preferred airline and seating arrangements, user preferred fueling stations, credit card information, preferred restaurants and cuisine, and last recorded user location.
16. The method of Claim 14 further comprising the step of storing the information pertaining to the mobile unit user preferences in a database associated with the proxy server.
17. The method of Claim 16 further comprising the step of storing the information pertaining to the mobile unit in a second database associated with the proxy server.
18. The method of Claim 1 wherein the step of selecting the appropriate conversion specification is based on the combination of the preferences of a user, mobile unit display characteristics, and content of a retrieved HTML document.

STATEMENT UNDER ARTICLE 19 (1)
Pursuant to Article 19 and Rule 46.4 of the PCT, the new claims are added to the international application to more clearly define the full scope of the invention. Replacement sheets for original Claims 1 -6 are provided in order to more clearly show the separation of the elements of each claim. Claim 1 has also been amended to change the term "format" to -- formatting—, so as to indicate that the formatting step is an active step as are the other steps in the claim. The following remarks are provided to identify some of the reasons that the claims distinguish over the references cited in the International Search Report.
Each of Claims 1-3 and 7-18 recites the step of "'retrieving mobile unit device information." None of the references cited in the International Search Report disclose the step of retrieving information, such as display capabilities for example, about the mobile unit. In the embodiments of the invention of Claims 1 -3 and 7-18. the device information of each mobile unit that carries out the claimed methods may be retrieved. As a result, the conversion to HDML may take into account the particular device capabilities of the unit that will receive the HDML information.
Each of Claims 1 -3 and 7-18 also recite the step of "optimizing the HDML/WML data for transmission." An example of optimization is provided at page 19 of the application. "[Ajccording to the specifications and characteristics of the mobile device, the optimization step formats the display size of the HDML/WML cards and decks to utilize the entire display of the mobile unit 100." None of the references cited disclose such an optimization step. There is no disclosure in the references of breaking cards and decks so that there is efficient use of the mobile unit display.
Claims 4-6 recite the generation of, filtering, and translating of "key/value pairs." An explanation of the use of key/value pairs is provided at pages 22-24 of the specification of the
32
present application. The cited references do not disclose the generation, filtration, or translation of key/value pairs, or anything similar to key/value pairs.
Each of the dependent claims distinguishes over the references cited for one or more of the foregoing reasons. In addition to these reasons, Claims 2, 7-10, and 14-17 recite that the mobile unit request "contains information pertaining to the mobile device." None of the references disclose this limitation in combination with the other elements of the claims. Furthermore, Claims 1 1 -13, and 14-17 recite that the mobile unit request "contains mobile unit user preferences." None of the references disclose this limitation of the claims.
In view of the foregoing amendments and remarks, Applicant respectfully requests issuance of a written opinion that is favorable as to all claims in the application.
