Abstract

An apparatus and a method to control the output power of a transmitter. The system includes a control circuit, a memory device and a processing unit. Calibration points are determined by first characterizing the frequency response of a transmitter (510) to generate an output level characteristic curve. Next, calibration points are identified by partitioning the output level characteristic curve into substantially linear regions, or on some other basis (515). For each such end point, a calibration value is measured (520). The calibration value is a digital value that can be stored in the memory device and represents the level of the control value necessary to obtain a desired output signal level from the output control circuit. Finally, the calibration values are stored within the memory device (525). The processing unit operates to control the output level of the transmitter. Initially, the processor receives a command to change the power level and/or frequency (555). Based on the power level, an set of calibration points are selected (560). Based on this information, a output level control value is generated (595). Temperature, voltage and other compensation is performed to adjust the output level control value (575, 580). Finally, the adjusted output level control value is used to control the output of the transmitter (585).
