While a screw-base lamp is shown, the invention is applicable to other type lamps as well, for example, discharge tube lamps such as single pin, bi-pin and recessed double-pin fluorescent lamps, quartz halogen tube lamps, bayonet base lamps, lamps with plug-in bases, lamps with pigtail leads, and so on.
  • the sheath 16 is preformed in a generally tubular shape and stretched to fit over the envelope 12.
  • sheath 16 While a generally cylindrical preformed sheath 16 is shown, it may be desirable to preform the sheath 16 in a non-cylindrical tubular form chosen to better accommodate a particular lamp envelope shape, including a closed-end tube.

  • the sheath 16 has a diameter of between, for example, 70-90 percent of the diameter of the envelope 12 and preferably a diameter of about 80 percent of that of the envelope 12.
  • the thickness of the sheath 16 may be, for example, between 0.0005 inches and 0.02 inches, with a range of 0.001 inches to 0.02 inches being preferred.
  • the sheath 16 may be, for example, blow molded, injection molded or cast.

  • the sheath can be colored with dyes to influence light quality.
  • Heat-age resisting or radiation stabilizing additives may be added to the sheath material.
  • the sheath 16 may be, for example, multi-colored and/or multi-layered. A multi component single layer may also be desired.
  • Ultra-violet or ozone protecting additives may be included.
  • the sheath 16 may also include optical scattering or reflecting dyes, pigments, or particulate. Flakes and/or infrared-reflecting/visible light transmitting pigment could be included in the sheath 16 to help keep the lamp 10 cooler or to improve energy efficiency. It also may be desirable to include indica 18 on the sheath 16 for advertising, nomenclature, or other uses.
