Abstract

The invention relates to an arrangement in a paper machine, in which a paper web (PR) is treated with at least one finishing unit, such as a calender (2), after the dryer section before the reeling up stage of the paper web (PR) in the reel-up (3). At least one finishing unit is placed at least partly to a deviated position in the height direction (H) with respect to the height position of the final end (1b) of the dryer section (1) and the initial end (3a) of the reel-up (3).

Description

Arrangement in a paper machine
The invention relates to an arrangement in a paper machine, in which a paper web is treated after the dryer section with at least one finishing unit, such as a calender, before the reeling up stage of the paper web.
As for prior art, reference is made to the publication US-5590476, which discloses a dryer section, a calender, and a reel-up located thereafter. In the publication, especially in Figs. 2a and 2b therein, the dryer sec- tion is divided into two superimposed parts, wherein the final part of the dryer section is located below the initial part of the dryer section, and a calender and thereafter a reel-up are coupled to the final end of the dryer section.
The publication WO 99/14427 discloses a construction, in which the cylinders in the final end of the dryer section are lifted upwards from the level where the other dryer sections are positioned, wherein the transfer distance of the paper web to the uppermost nip in the calender is reduced when compared to a solution in which the final end of the dryer section would be on the floor level.
Even though the above-presented solutions are advantageous as such, needs have arisen for the placement of a more versatile finishing unit after the dryer section in a paper machine. Thus, it is an aim of the pre- sent invention to improve the state of art prevailing in the field by introducing such an arrangement in connection with a paper machine that it is possible to implement versatile additional equipment and possibilities of running the web.
To attain these purposes, the arrangement according to the invention is primarily characterized in that at least one finishing unit is placed at least to a partly deviated position in the height direction with respect to the height position of the final end of the dryer section and the initial end of the reel-up.
Thus, for example the following advantages are attained: the overall length of the final section of the paper machine can be shortened when compared to a solution in which the dryer section, the finishing unit and the reel-up are located successively in the same horizontal plane,
when the transfer of the paper web is conducted in the above-described manner, it is possible to arrange members that treat the paper web and/or measure the properties of the paper web in the transfer sections between the final end of the dryer section and the initial end of the finishing unit and/or between the final end of the finishing unit and the initial end of the reel-up, and
the final end of the finishing unit and the initial end of the reel-up can be positioned close to each other and it is easy to implement the direct transfer of the paper web past the finishing unit.
Thus, the main advantage attained by means of the invention is that the arrangement enables alternative running possibilities as well as the utilization of intermediate transfers of the paper web in the vertical direction for example in measurements and in moistening and/or coating of the paper web.
The appended dependent claims present some preferred embodiments of the arrangement according to the invention.

Fig. 1 is a generalized drawing showing the basic principle of the arrangement according to the invention in a schematical side-view, and
Fig. 2 is a more detailed representation of a finishing unit in a side- view. The drawing of Fig. 1 shows the final end of a paper machine, wherein a rectangle 1 represents the dryer section containing an initial end 1a and a final end 1 b, when seen in the travel direction of the paper web PR. After the dryer section 1 in the travel direction of the paper web there is at least one finishing unit, which is illustrated by rectangle 2 in the drawing. The finishing unit is preferably a calender that comprises at least one stack of rolls with at least three rolls and two nips. This type of calender can be designated by the name multi-nip calender. Calenders of this type are constructions which are so familiar to anyone skilled in the art that they are not shown in the drawing, and neither is any other construction, such as the construction of the dryer section or the construction of the reel-up shown in detail in the drawing.
The initial end of the calender 2 is marked with a reference numeral 2a, and the exit end of the paper web PR, i.e. the final end is marked with a reference numeral 2b. Correspondingly, the reel-up is represented by a rectangle 3, wherein the paper web PR enters the reel-up 3 from the initial end of the reel-up 3, and it is removed as a full reel from the final end 3b of the reel-up 3. According to the invention, the calender 2 func- tioning as a finishing unit is placed in a deviated height position with respect to the final end 1b of the dryer section and the initial end 3a of the reel-up 3. This deviated height position is represented by letter H in the drawing. According to the embodiment of the drawing, the calender 2 is situated entirely below the floor level of the dryer section and the reel- up. In the basic embodiment shown in the drawing, the calender 2 used as a finishing unit is placed horizontally, but according to the basic idea of the invention, the roll assembly of the calender 2 can be positioned in an inclined angle with respect to the horizontal plane, wherein the angle α can deviate from the angle α = 0° shown in the drawing and even to the value of = 90°. The preferred positions are horizontal or inclined to save the space in the vertical direction and making full use of the horizontal space available in the basement.
As can be seen in the drawing, the dryer section 1 and the reel-up 3 are supported on the same horizontal base 4, especially to a floor level, underneath of which there is a space 5 where the calender 2 functioning as a finishing unit is supported for example from underneath on the floor level 6 of said space and/or from above by the base 4, such as the floor level.
In the drawing, the reference numerals 7, 8 schematically show in the travel direction of the paper web PR the transfer section 7 between the final end 1 b of the dryer section and the initial end 2a of the calender 2, and correspondingly, the transfer section 8 between the final end 2b of the calender and the initial end 3a of the reel-up. The arrangement according to the invention enables for example the placement of a mem- ber treating the paper web PR, for example a moistening or coating member, as well as the placement of members measuring the properties of the paper web within the area of said transfer sections 7 and 8. The transfer of the paper web PR between the final end 1 b of the dryer section and the initial end 2a of the calender 2 and, on the other hand, between the final end 2b of the calender and the initial end 3a of the reel-up 3 can be vertical in either section or in both sections 7,8 or, as shown in the drawing, the travel of the paper web is arranged in the machine direction diagonally backwards compared with the overall forward travel direction of the paper web PR. Thus, the paper web PR forms at least a single-sided dovetail shape in the vertical section taken in the machine direction. The travel of the paper web through the finishing unit, after the point of exit down below the floor level (base 4) and before the re-entry up above the floor level, takes place entirely below the floor level.
To apply the arrangement according to the invention, it is possible to form openings 9a, 9b on the floor level to guide the paper web PR from the dryer section 1 to the space 5 underneath, and up away from the space 5 to the reel-up 3, respectively. In the embodiment according to the drawing, the distance E between the final end 1 b of the dryer section 1 and the initial end 3a of the reel-up 3 is smaller than the horizontal length of the calender 2, or more generally, the horizontal projection of the calender 2 in inclined position. It is possible to pass the calender 2 by guiding the paper web PR directly to the reel-up 3 from the final end 1 b of the dryer section (dotted line PR'). Fig. 2 shows in a side view a finishing unit, in this case a calender 2, which is placed in a horizontal position below the floor level 4 supporting the dryer section and the reel-up. The calender is a multi-nip calender, comprising in the case shown six rolls forming five successive nips, another, preferably larger number of rolls and successive nips being also possible. The stack of calender rolls forms an angle of zero with the horizontal plane, but it can also be inclined to such extent that the uppermost roll still lies below the plane defined by the floor level.

Claims

Claims:
1. An arrangement in a paper machine, in which a paper web (PR) is treated after the dryer section (1) by at least one finishing unit before the paper web (PR) is reeled up in a reel-up (3), characterized in that at least one finishing unit is placed at least partly to a deviated position in the height direction (H) with respect to the height position of the final end (1b) of the dryer section (1) and the initial end (3a) of the reel-up (3).
2. The arrangement according to claim 1 , characterized in that the finishing unit is a calender (2).
3. The arrangement according to claim 2, characterized in that the finishing unit is a multiroll calender comprising a stack of at least three calender rolls.
4. The arrangement according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the finishing unit is placed below the final end (1 b) of the dryer section (1) and the initial end (3a) of the reel-up (3).
5. The arrangement according to claim 3, characterized in that the dryer section (1) and the reel-up (3) are supported on the same horizontal base (4), especially on a floor level, underneath of which there is a space (5) for said at least one finishing unit.
6. The arrangement according to any of the claims 2 to 4, characterized in that the calender (2) functioning as a finishing unit is placed in a horizontal position.
7. The arrangement according to any of the claims 2 to 4, characterized in that the calender (2) functioning as a finishing unit is placed in an inclined position.
8. The arrangement according to any of the claims 1 to 6, characterized in that at least one member treating the paper web (PR) is placed on the transfer section (7, 8) of the paper web, which is located between the final end (1 b) of the dryer section (1 ) and the initial end (2a) of the finishing unit, and/or between the final end (2b) of the finishing unit and the initial end (3a) of the reel-up.

The arrangement according to any of the claims 1 or 7, characterized in that at least one member measuring the properties of the paper web (PR) is placed on the transfer section (7, 8) of the paper web, which is located between the final end (1b) of the dryer section (1) and the initial end (2a) of the finishing unit, and/or between the final end (2b) of the finishing unit and the initial end (3a) of the reel- up.
10. The arrangement according to any of the claims 2 to 8, characterized in that the horizontal distance (E) between the final end (1 b) of the dryer section (1) and the initial end (3a) of the reel-up (3) is smaller than the horizontal projection of the calender (2).

The arrangement according to any of the claims 1 to 9, characterized in that the paper web (PR) is transferred backwards in the machine direction between the final end (1b) of the dryer section (1) and the initial end (2a) of the finishing unit, and/or between the final end (2b) of the finishing unit and the initial end (3a) of the reel-up, the transfer path of the paper web (PR) having between the final end (1 b) of the dryer section (1) and the initial end (3a) of the reel-up substan- tially at least a single-sided dovetail shape in the vertical section taken in the machine direction.
