Abstract

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Phthalsäureanhydrid, wobei in einem ersten Schritt o-Xylol in einem Reaktor in flüssiger Phase unter Zusatz eines Katalysators mit Sauerstoff, gegebenenfalls im Gemisch mit einem inerten Gas, teilweise oxidiert wird, eine Fraktion, die nicht umgesetztes Xylol enthält, aus dem teilweise oxidierten Gemisch abdestilliert und der ersten Stufe wieder zugeführt wird, und das an Xylol abgereicherte teilweise oxidierte Gemisch in einem zweiten Schritt in der Gasphase zu Phthalsäureanhydrid oxidiert wird. Erfindungsgemäss wird aus der abdestillierten, nicht umgesetztes o-Xylol enthaltenden Fraktion Toluol, vorzugsweise als Azeotrop mit Wasser, abgetrennt. Durch die Abtrennung des Toluols wird die Ausbildung von hot spots in der zweiten Stufe der Reaktion vermieden, wodurch eine bessere Selektivität der Gesamtreaktion erreicht wird.
