Definitions
- the present invention relates to a keeping and packaging method for flowers and unprocessed agricultural products, and in particular to a keeping and packaging method for flowers and unprocessed agricultural products improving the contrivance under the device disclosed m the Korean Utility Model Application 96-4384 of the present applicant .
- the Korean Utility Model Application 96-4384 relates to a keeping and packaging structure for flowers which can prevent the flowers cultivated m a cultivation place from withering away or being damaged, and keep their freshness and original shape, when being transported to flower dealers, wholesalers or retailers.
- the present invention is completed by improving the keeping and packaging structure described in the above said utility model. That is to say, decorated flowers or other agricultural products as well as flowers are put into a sealed bag in said structure, and a protective gas, preferably nitrogen gas is filled in the sealed bag to keep them for an extended period of time.
- a protective gas preferably nitrogen gas is filled in the sealed bag to keep them for an extended period of time.
- the flowers or agricultural products m the sealed bag isolated from the external environment do not wither away for a long time, so that the consumers are constantly provided with fresh flowers or agricultural products .
- the Korean Utility Model Application 96-4384 relates to a packaging method for flowers, not the decorated ones. Therefore, the flowers are transported to the flower dealers via brokers, and decorated and sold in the forms of flower baskets, bunches of flowers, bouquets and wreaths. As a result, the flowers cannot be directly provided to the consumers in the keeping and packaging structure. Accordingly, the decorated flowers cannot be delivered to the consumers at once. In case the consumers are not able to get the finished products in time, the flowers wither away soon due to exposure to the external environment, thereby wasting the expenses for cultivation, delivery and decoration.
- the various kinds of agricultural products such as foreign or domestic vegetables, fruits and plants are cultivated in farmhouses, sold to professional brokers in large quantities, and delivered to the consumers through the wholesalers and retailers.
- the agricultural products are cultivated in different places, periods, temperature and humidity, and exposed to the external environment for a long time through many steps, they are easily damaged or decayed during the distribution process.
- the agricultural products do not retain freshness and high quality. As a result, it .unnecessarily squanders resources and enormous money .
- an object of the present invention is to solve various problems in the distribution of agricultural products such as vegetables, fruits and plants, or flowers, regardless of whether they are cultivated in the country or abroad .
- the Korean Utility Model Application 96-4384 discloses a keeping and packaging structure for flowers wherein flowers are fixed m various methods and covered with a sealed bag filled with a protective gas for long-term preservation, whereby a large quantity of flowers can be easily packaged and do not wither away and/or lose shapes.
- the present invention utilizes the device of the aforementioned utility model to maintain freshness of flowers or agricultural products for long-term distribution and to provide the consumers with the products retaining freshness and high nutritious values, by putting the flowers or non-processed agricultural products such as vegetables, fruits and plants into a sealed bag, filling the sealed bag with a protective gas, preferably nitrogen gas to keep their original state and prevent their aging process by metabolism, and storing them at 3 to 25°C, preferably 5 to 25°C.
- a protective gas preferably nitrogen gas
- a primary object of the present invention is to prevent flowers from withering away for an extended period of time by putting flower baskets, bunches of flowers, bouquets and wreaths as well as flowers m a sealed bag, and filling nitrogen gas therein, on the basis of the device or idea of tne Korean Utility Model Application 96-4384.
- Another object of tne present invention is to simplify the distribution process and provide fresh and nutritious agricultural products to consumers by putting non-processed agricultural products such as vegetables, fruits and plants in a sealed bag, and filling nitrogen gas therein, so that the agricultural products may not wither away despite of the long period of distribution, on the basis of the idea of the Korean Utility Model Application 96-4384.
- a keeping and packaging method for flowers and agricultural products including the steps of: making a protective case with thick paper, synthetic resin, metal or timber and the like, the protective case being fabricated m various shapes; adhering and fixing flowers or decorated flowers such as flower baskets, bunches of flowers, bouquets and wreaths, or non- processed agricultural products such as vegetables, fruits and plants into the protective case by means of a fixing means such as an adhesive tape; covering the protective case with at least one sealed bag; and filling a protective gas, preferably nitrogen gas into tne sealed bag to prevent the flowers or agricultural products from withering away, and storing it at 3 to 25°C, preferably at 5 to 25°C.
- a protective gas preferably nitrogen gas into tne sealed bag
- the decorated flowers such as flower baskets, bunches of flowers, bouquets and wreaths are put in the sealed bag and the protective gas is filled therein, the flowers do not wither away for an extended period of time. Accordingly, in the case that the improved structure of the present invention is used, when a great mass of flowers are ordered, even if decorated and distributed in advance, the flowers can be readily provided to the consumers without withering away or being damaged.
- the flowers do not wither away, and thus can be used for another purpose.
- the non-processed agricultural products such as vegetables, fruits and plants are put m the sealed bag, and the protective gas is filled therein. Accordingly, when the agricultural products are distributed m large quantities, they do not wither away or are not damaged. Therefore, the consumers can be readily provided with the agricultural products retaining their freshness and good nutritious values.
- Figure 1 is a graph showing an amount of ethylene generated at each temperature (5°C, 10°C and 20C°) in a state where a keeping and packaging method of the present invention is applied to roses plucked for sale;
- Figure 2 is a graph showing an amount of carbon dioxide generated at each temperature (5°C, 10°C and 20C°) in a state where the keeping and packaging method of the present invention is applied to the roses plucked for sale.
- Roses plucked for sale are divided into two groups. Two protective cases made of thick paper are prepared. The first rose group is put n a water tube and fixed into the protective case by means of a fixing means such as an adhesive tape. The protective case is covered with at least one sealed bag. Nitrogen gas (N 2 ) is filled m the sealed bag. The same procedure is repeated on the second rose group but not using the water tube.
- the keeping and packaging method in accordance with the present invention enables the flowers to maintain freshness over three weeks without the water tube. As compared with the conventional treatment using chemical agents, it increases the life span of the products by at least two times .
- the first and second rose groups have discharged a slight amount of carbon dioxide for 15 to 20 days, regardless of the use of the water tube. Carbon dioxide is generated by breathing of the plants. As a result, the roses kept and packaged m this example almost stop breathing.
- Example 1 The procedure of Example 1 is repeated on anotner two rose groups but maintaining a temperature at 10°C. The results are shown in Figures 1 and 2.
- the amount of ethylene generated was increased due to generation of microorganisms after two weeks.
- the roses have produced a slight amount of ethylene .
- the roses can maintain their freshness over three weeks .
- the color of the roses, the thickness of their petals and leaves, and the weight and water content of the roses have been rarely changed.
- the roses kept in the water tube have discharged more carbon dioxide than the other roses. However, it is judged that the two rose groups are still m a good condition.
- Example 1 The procedure of Example 1 is repeated on another two rose groups but maintaining a temperature at 20°C. The results are shown in Figures 1 and 2.
- Example 3 the amount of carbon oxide is much greater in Example 3 than Examples 1 and 2. Especially when the water tube is used, the amount of carbon dioxide is increased .
- flowers are kept in a water vessel and exposed to an external environment, or maintained in a refrigerating glass case.
- the exposed flowers fade within one to three days .
- Even m the refrigerating glass case the flowers cannot maintain freshness over a week. That is, it is publicly known that the flowers or agricultural products cannot be freshly kept for an extended period of time when exposed to the air at a room temperature, and even when maintained at a refrigerating temperature.
- the present invention relates to the keeping and packaging method for flowers or non- processed agricultural products by putting the flowers or agricultural products in the sealed bag and filling the protective gas therein.
- the flowers and agricultural products can maintain their freshness for a long time at a preferable temperature.
- the flowers can be distributed and kept over four weeks at 5°C, three weeks at 10°C and for about two weeks at 20 to 25°C.
- the flowers and agricultural products are m a better condition without using the water tube.
- the consumers in spite of a case that the consumers are not aole to get the agricultural products in time, or the agricultural products are left on a display rack for a long time, the consumers can purchase the fresh and nutritious agricultural products without hesitation.
