Abstract

The present invention provides an improved bacterial cell biosensor. More specifically, an immobilisation system for a bioluminescent bacteria is provided, wherein natural and genetically modified bacteria for use in toxicity testing are immobilised in a polyvinyl alcohol thin film, this thin film allowing operation with an appropriate instrument. The immobilisation of the bacteria in the film results in the retention of the luminescent properties such that they can be used for the qualitative and quantitative detection of pollutant chemicals and industrial effluence in the environment.
