Definitions
- THIS INVENTION relates to an infusion device
- An infusion device comprises a device that includes generally a container for holding a flowable medium, a nozzle aligned with an outlet opening defined by the container through which a flowable medium contained in the container can be displaced and driving means for acting on a flowable medium contained in the container for displacing the medium from the container via the nozzle, typically to be infused into the body of a human or animal
- a typical infusion device can thus take the form of a syringe, with the container forming the barrel of the syringe and the driving means the plunger of the syringe
- the nozzle may be formed in particular to be introduced into an orifice or a canal of a human or animal body to permit, for example, a flowable medicament to be infused into the body for the administration of the medicament
- an infusion device which comprises
- a container for containing a flowable medium to be infused the container defining an outlet opening and having a nozzle in register with the outlet opening and extending from the container,
- driving means displaceable within the container, for exerting a force on a flowable medium contained in the container for displacing the flowable medium from the container via the outlet opening and the nozzle, and at least one additional nozzle that, in one mode of use of the infusion device, is removably located on the nozzle of the container in an arrangement in which it is in flow communication with the nozzle of the container and it permits a flowable medium displaced from the container by the driving means to flow through both the nozzles and then be discharged from the additional nozzle.
- the infusion device particularly may be in the form of a syringe, with the container forming the barrel of the syringe and the driving means forming the plunger of the syringe.
- the nozzle of the container may be releasably secured to the container or, alternatively, may be fixedly secured to the container. According to one particular embodiment of the invention, the nozzle of the container forms an integral part of the container.
- the additional nozzle of the infusion device of the invention may be removably located on the nozzle of the container by fitting over the region of the nozzle of the container that defines the discharge opening thereof, the additional nozzle thereby being axially aligned with the nozzle of the container.
- the additional nozzle may be located on the nozzle of the container by a friction fit.
- the additional nozzle may be located on the nozzle of the container by complementary locating formations defined by the additional nozzle and the nozzle of the container.
- the infusion device may include more than one additional nozzle, and in one mode of use thereof one additional nozzle is removably located on the nozzle of the container and the other additional nozzles, including the said one additional nozzle, are removably located on one anther in an aligned configuration to permit displacement of a flowable medium from the container through the nozzle of the container and all the additional nozzles.
- the driving means of the infusion device of the invention may include a stop formation for each additional nozzle, each stop formation being removably located in a position in which it can stop the displacement of the driving means for acting on a flowable medium contained in the container for displacing the medium from the container, permitting a first volume of a flowable medium to be displaced from the container and requiring removal of a stop formation to permit a further volume of flowable medium to be displaced from the container
- the stop formations may be located at spaced locations along the plunger
- the invention extends also to an additional nozzle for an infusion device, in accordance with the present invention
- the Applicant believes that the infusion device, in accordance with the invention, will be useful for infusing at least two charges of a flowable medium into areas to be treated, of the same or different human or animal bodies
- a free end region of the outermost additional nozzle is introduced into an orifice or canal of a human or animal body into which the medium is to be infused and a predetermined charge of the medium is infused into said orifice or canal, which charge may be determined by the location of a stop formation of the infusion device
- the nozzle can then be removed from the underlying nozzle and be disposed of, following which another charge of the medium can be infused into another orifice or canal of the same human or animal body, or of a different human or animal body It will be appreciated that by disposing of the nozzle used to administer a charge of the flowable medium, cross-infection is obviated when another charge of the medium is administered via the next nozzle
- an infusion device in accordance with the invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 10
- the infusion device 1 0 is adapted for use in the treatment of mastitis of the udder of a diary cow After a lactation period of approximately three hundred days, a dairy cow has a dry or non-lactation period of approximately sixty days During this period the udder of the cow is prone to mastitis As a result, at the commencement of the dry period, an antibiotic is infused into each of the four teats of the cow's udder, via the teat canal openings
- the infusion device 1 0 comprises a syringe designated generally by the reference numeral 1 2 and four additional nozzles 14 1 , 14 2, 14 3 and 14 4 that are removably located on each other and, as such, on the syringe 1 2
- the syringe 1 2 comprises a barrel 1 6 for holding the antibiotic to be administered and a plunger 1 6 for exerting a force on the antibiotic in the barrel for infusing it into the teat canal opening of a teat of the cow's udder
- the barrel of the syringe has a nozzle 20 formed integrally therewith through which the antibiotic can flow
- the additional nozzle 1 4 4 is removably located on the nozzle 20 of the barrel 1 6 and the additional nozzle 14 3 is removably located on the additional nozzle 14 4 to at least cover the tip region of the additional nozzle 14 4, surrounding the outlet thereof
- the additional nozzles 14 2 and 14 1 are removably locatable in similar fashion on underlying additional nozzles thereby forming a common passage through the nozzles, that is in flow communication with the nozzle 20 of the barrel 1 6
- Adjacent nozzles may have complementary locating formations for removably locating the nozzles with respect to one another
- the locating formations may be of any configuration suitable for the purpose and may comprise screw thread formations
- a friction fit between nozzles also can provide for the required location of the nozzles with respect to one another
- the plunger 1 8 includes four stop formations in the form of stop pins 22 1 , 22.2,
- the infusion device 10 is used to treat all four quarters of a dairy cow's udder and, as such, the stop pin 22 1 is removed, the tip of the additional nozzle 14 1 is inserted into the teat canal opening of one of the teats and a charge of the antibiotic is infused into the teat canal opening by depressing the plunger within the barrel The additional nozzle 14 1 is then removed from the teat canal opening and disposed of
- the stop pin 22 2 is then removed from the plunger and the tip of the additional nozzle 14 2 is then inserted into the teat canal opening of the teat of the next quarter to be treated and the plunger is depressed within the barrel until stop pin 22.3 abuts the barrel, thereby administering the next charge of antibiotic into the teat canal opening
- the additional nozzle 14 2 is then disposed of and the process is repeated in similar fashion until all four quarters of the cow's udder have been treated It will be appreciated that as the additional nozzles 14 over-lie one another to cover the tip regions thereof, that cross-invention between infected teats of a dairy cow's udder when another charge of the medicament is administered to another teat, is obviated
- the infusion device in accordance with the invention, makes use of one syringe for treating all four quarters of a diary cow's udder This will clearly result in a cost saving
- the infusion device in accordance with the invention, is also simple to use which allows its use by unskilled workers
- the Applicant envisages that the stop pins and the nozzles may be colour-coded so as to indicate to a worker using the infusion device that a particular additional nozzle is to be removed and disposed of together with a particular stop pin
